KENT, Wash. – The Washington State Patrol is looking at street racing as a possible cause in a crash that killed two people on State Route 516 in Kent.

Troopers think a 40-year-old Renton man caused 24-year-old Amanda Berman of Yakima to lose control of her car early Sunday morning.

She died at the scene and her 28-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries.

A third vehicle also got caught up in the crash. The driver, 57-year-old Jose Cuellar, was killed.

The man troopers think caused the crash is in critical condition. He faces vehicular homicide and DUI charges.

My family and I were driving home from dinner, which included a trip to the ice cream store, when I looked in my rear view mirror to see a car coming up fast on my right. The lane this person was in merged into my lane, as I watched through my right side mirror the car passed me, only inches from my car, on the right shoulder and swerved in front of me into my lane, and continued swerving in and out of traffic. I noticed that there was another car in the far left lane racing the car that had just past me. The next morning I read this story. I am grateful that my family and I were spared, as well as, saddened that other families will be without their loved ones.

I wish everyone truely knew what happened so they could think before they said anything stupid. But they are just people, who are they to consider the family of the 25 year old woman who was killed. They are selfish and dont know the truth, and seeing that me and another person commenting on this post are FAMILY of the young woman, Yes we do know what really happen. NO she was not racing people get that threw you heads now. She was being a nice person and doing a friend a simple favor and in result her death. She had no intentions of hurting anyone let alone herself that night. What happend WAS NOT her fault. She was a good person and that is the way she needs to be remember, she deserves nothing less. SHE WAS AN AMAZING PERSON.

@mrmagoo. No out of body experience here. Our family went to visit the passenger, my cousins boyfriend that was in the car and badly injured. That is the information he was able to pass on. I am so sad for everyone here. Assuming the responsible party has a family, three families and countless friends have a long healing process ahead. It is just so sad that we as people need these constant reminders to cherish every moment we are given with the ones we love.

And...if alcohol was involved...I hope he spends a lot of time behind bars. I also hope that he has endless nightmares and no sleep....let his conscience bother him for eternity. I could never live with the guilt of killing someone.

I was devisated and so upset on the sick things people were leaving about my friends who had just lost their lives. Death, is the most painful loss I have had to endore. For the sake of the loved ones who are no longer with us, please people, please be more intelligent with the comments you leave. This is someones son, daughter, aunt, brother, sister, cousin. This is not a matter of what you drive. This is a matter of street racing. Want to stop it? Great me too. on those streets that have no lights, no camera no action-put speed bumps in the darn road! THAT WILL STOP IT. TO the story at hand-yes it is sad someone lost their life due to being STUPID. People must realize that a car is not a "toy"-it is something that can kill. This proves that point. I am sick of these racers, suped up cars * better than my car, and Im almost 50* but, my car still goes, thats what counts. These racers though are a DANGER to public safety. I would love to talk with some of these racers, find out WHY they do it-. Wonder if they wear saggy pants too. Wonder if their excuse for racing is a bug on the floor of the car. Maybe car racing on city streets is NOW what is more less known as "Race gangs". KINGTV should do a full indepth story on it.. Maybe Robert Mack will do it. Why it happens, and STOP IT. SPEED BUMPS save lives

While I think the process of haveing a comment section is good for allowing freedom of speech, some idiots should have this privalage taken away from them! It is very clear that these individuals who judge without facts and make such comments have not endured such a tragedy. The only fact that is known at this time is that 2 individuals lost thier lives in a tragic accident no matter what the cause. If it was your family member how would you feel? Please consider this when making comments about such a tragic event. The girl in this accident that lost her life was a beutiful and wonderful young lady and my niece. So keep your mouth shut !!!

Somebody needs to jack up the laws on street racing. There is wayyyy to much of this stuff going on and wayyyy to many people getting killed. I'm also betting that in the case of either of these two individuals if you look at their driving records you will see they either are on suspended licenses or they have lists of violations as long as your arm. They shouldn't have been allowed on the street but once again the judicial system has not only let us down but cost lives.

The girl driving the car had gone out to help a friend who had locked themself out of their car. Upon her return trip home, she noticed two people racing up the road behind her. Their driving behavior made her nervous. She was simply trying to move out of their way and it cost her her life. She was NOT Racing, but trying to avoid the danger of the two who were. Do not say she murdered herself. Our family is devasted.

So tragic and sad. Deaths like this just are so unnecessary. They should set up a program to let these guys learn how to drive and race at high speeds. Train them over at SIR. Race car drivers are some of the safest on the streets as they get the competitiveness and need for speed out of their system at the track. Just an idea.

I don't believe the 40 year old man and the 24 year old woman were racing. Most likely, it's a road rage gone terribly wrong. It's possible one of the two was chasing the other. Judging from my experience, most likely the clumsy or crazy woman driver dangerously cut off the man. The man got p!ssed. So the chasing game began at the same time as frequent usage of the middle finger.

honest_a_hol said on December 5, 2010 at 9:25 PM

@alain_delon: You don't know anything about SUV. In head-on collision between a mid-sized SUV and a small size sedan, SUV will win! Most likely, the driver of SUV will survive while the driver in a small sedan won't. BUT when a small sedan hits the driver's side of the SUV, the result will be just the opposite. AND when a small sedan hits the SUV's right rear bumper or left rear bumper, it will create a fish-tail manuever effect, and the SUV will be in a dangerous rollover accident.

The penalty for driving DUI should be prison first offence. Driving recklessly should also bring very heavy penaltys. I sometimes push the limet when it comes to speed but if you told me I could be put in jail for it !! I sure as hell would not ! and forget about me DUI I would not have more than one drink and drive if you told me I could go to PRiSON for it. Its the people operating the vehicles, NOT the vehicles. Most of people in that area know that area is a hot spot for that kind of racing. No matter what, you cant always protect everybody all the time. You just must decide, at what expense (rights) of the majority to protect the few, that seem to find they can't be at fault, and pay the price.Still very sad story, so young.

What a screwed-up article. Head-line says 'double-fatal' but fails to say who the second fatality was. It just says one person is in critical condition (afrer being arrested), the driver of the Honda although the article never even mentions him being involved in the accident itself, the other, a passenger in the Chevy, it says is in serious condition. There's got to be a ton of out-of-work individuals that could do a better job ob reporting these events than the current staff.

We give our rights away and spend billions to search millions of people at air ports for the unlikely chance that some small terrorist action might take away a flight of people-- MAYBE... and yet, we do almost nothing about the almost totally preventable deaths of over 50,000 people a year that WILL CERTAINLY die in car wrecks like this. No wonder why the lotto is so popular: We are statistically inept and unable to prioritize our money. Interesting how winnings of the lotto often go to math and other education courses while the money we give to the government for education and law enforcement all goes to lobbyists for airport body scanners, xray machines and people that conduct searches.
