The King County Council on Monday appointed Steve Strachan as county sheriff.
The move was prompted by Sheriff Sue Rahr's decision to resign her post last month to take a job as the new director of the state's police training academy.
Strachan was Rahr's deputy, and before that he was chief of police in Kent. His appointment will last until November, when an election will be held to fill the remainder of Rahr's term, which expires in 2013.
KING 5 News reported in mid March that John Urquhart, the longtime spokesman for the sheriff's department, is weighing a campaign for the office this fall. Strachan has also said he will campaign for the office.
