Spokane police officers feel like targets

SPOKANE-- Officers statewide aren’t hiding the fact they do feel like targets, even in Spokane.

Now Spokane Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick has taken quick actions to keep her officers safe.

Almost immediately after Chief Kirkpatrick heard about the shootings Sunday morning, she sent out an email to the Mayor and her own officers. It told them about the four officers appeared to have been ambushed. To prevent something similar from happening to her staff, the chief told police to change certain procedures they may just take for granted.

She doesn’t want officers doing paperwork anymore in their patrol car, which is a pretty common practice since their vehicles are equipped with laptops. She also does not want her officers taking breaks by themselves anymore. For instance sitting at a coffee shop without another officer whose sole responsibility is to be a lookout.

Chief Kirkpatrick says she hopes this defensive mindset is only temporary. She admits these changes may slow down productivity, but says safety comes first, both for her officers and the public they are trying to protect.

Thank you to the police officers who are working to keep people safe. I hope that they can remain safe. But I think that more than changing policies, people need to start taking responsibility for helping keep police officers safe. This includes family members who don't report a threat to KILL SOMEONE, and then who help the killer escape. The accomplices of this idiot should all get the sentence that he would have gotten, had he somehow lived through another gunshot wound. Wait, nevermind. He would have been let off with a hug and an apology.

I don't know of anything I can say that hasn't already been said. I absolutely agree that our police officers are targets of those who want free reign to rape, rob, and terrorize our communities. As julie1212 said "shame on your family for trying to protect a cold blooded killer." Shame on them also for celebrating the rape of a young child---that's exactly what they are doing by helping him. I hope all our officers do everything they can to protect themselves. All I can say is stay safe and thank you for risking your lives to protect the rest of us.

May God Bless all 4 of these innocent officers that were struck down in such a cowardly way! The poor kids that are now without a parent. May God Bless you all as well. I hope you rot in Hell Clemmons, that is where you belong for eternity!! Shame on your family for trying to protect a cold blooded killer. I hope they all face charges as well.

I agree with mrmagooo re judges (and others charged with public safety) who continue to release these dangerous jerks. If the issue is not enough jail beds then release non-violent offenders and keep the creeps in prison. I'm for any change in procedures that will keep our police officers more safe. The first and most obvious step is to keep career violent misfits locked up.

What are they going to do with the judge who let this killer out on bail ? Some one with is past and charged with child rape sould have bail set a $1,000,000.00 ! I think this judge should step down.

The police chief in Spokane isn't getting it. Those officers were not "taking breaks by themselves". All 4 of them were there. Why have more than one taking a break at the same time? So more can be killed like this? All officers are targets as soon as they put their uniforms on. Everyday, not just when one gets killed. Why do police cars not have bullet-proof windows anyway? It saves time for them to do their work on the computers in their cars. If they had bullet-proof windows they would be safer.

Why is KING shutting down comments on so many articles relating to this killer? I know they don't want us lambasting them in the comment section for hampering the investigation, but that makes them a bunch of manipulative cowards who are afraid of real journalism. Or they're afraid someone may comment on how it seems to be a part of the culture of thugs not to rat each other out, but rather to aid and abet.

God Bless the souls we have lost in the last month & may God help us survivors, live up to their examples with pride in their honor! Thank you for sharing your loved ones with us. I would say anyone that commits cold blooded murder like this is evil. We have just had one mental patient that has been sentenced to life supposedly for mass murder. We need to stop this. Lock them up & don't let them out EVER! When do the hand cuffs come off of the cops that risk their lives daily for us & yet murders & RAPISTS continue to be set free when they have been sentenced. We need to change the laws so that anyone killing an officer of the law should get life without any chance of prole, as in DEATH with no chance of appeal. I know of a child rapist that felt like he was on vacation, in Walla Walla! They get TV computers WHY? When did prison or even jail become a vacation w/ health benefits. Many of us can't afford outside? CHANGE OUR LAWS & SAVE LIVES!
