SEATTLE - King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg announced Thursday he plans to seek the death penalty in the case of Christopher Monfort.

Monfort is charged with aggravated murder in the shooting of Seattle Police officer Timothy Brenton. Officer Brenton was shot and killed on Halloween night near Seattle's Leschi neighborhood while training fellow officer Britt Sweeney. Officer Sweeney survived the gun assasult.

Monfort has pleaded not guilty.

Monfort is also charged with attempted first degree murder of Seattle Police Sergeant Gary Nelson, arising from Montfort's conduct when apprehended, and the arson and attempted murder of additional law enforcement personnel stemming from bombs that were planted at the Charles Street Vehicle Services Facility used by the Seattle Police Department, according to a press release from Satterberg's office.

A court hearing in Monfort's case was scheduled for Thursday morning. Satterberg's decision was announced one day ahead of the legal deadline for filing the notice.

The problem with the death penalty is its finality. Yes, the mental illness and race issues are tiresome. However, think very carefully before endorsing death, as it cannot be undone. If you accept death for someone else, then it is fair to expect someone else to seek it if one of your loved ones is accused of something heinous. Just a thought.

Push this loser out of his wheel chair down a flight of stairs into a basement and lock the door forever and be done with it.

They gave 30 day slap on the hand to the pack of gorillas that beat the Tuba Man to death in the stadium parking lot for grins and giggles, so they should at least kill this POS.

KSS123- Yes, I think Ridgeway should have been dealt the death penalty, based off of the evidence they had. I really don't know if the closure a family can have twenty years after the fact, trumps adequate justice. Why even have a death penalty if the most heinous can avoid it? All life should be weighed the same, a Teacher, a Cop, Mom, Dad or drunk Native American. I also think the same should apply for all suspects. Just reading these blogs you can see the varied views of punishment. Some are based on the actual crime, some have a hint of racism, some just want justice. But when your department is not consistent with the punishment, it opens that department up to the allusion of unfairness and bias.

Normally, I would agree that it is more costly to go through all the appeals of the death penalty. But, I wonder in this case (I really don't know) if it's more costly to keep him alive, given his "special medical needs" that he brought on to himself - our prisons have to provide him handicapped access, probably change his diapers for him several times a day, etc. I don't know the answer, just speculating.

So even though I agree he should be put to death for his crime, on a purely cost basis it's cheaper to keep his sorry pathetic rear in prison. What a miseralbe existance it will be for him to live everyday in prison for the rest of his life having to depend on others to get him around...Let him rot, either in hell, or in prison.

We need to streamline our system where guilt is so painfully obvious. This guy should have been toast within 30 days of his crime.

Gritz, so you think Ridgeway should have gotten death? I do, but his plea did give closure to many families on what happened to their loved ones since he then gave details of many of the murders. So do you think sparing his life is worth giving closure to many families? Monfort should get no less than death.

Sounds like a home grown terrorist. I would hope they would seek the death penalty and no plea deal. And please live out the mental illness excuses or he came from a deprived background, these excuses are really becoming tiresome along with the race issues.

Most of you complaining about your tax dollars have it all wrong - due to automatic appeals (so we don't kill an innocent person - thank you Texas) etc, etc, it is actually MORE expensive to carry out the death penalty than to imprison him for life. Truthdector - I think you need to be evaluated - you play 6 degrees of Obama with everything... guess what? Everything is not his fault.

I am not saying this guy doesnt deserve the death penalty. My point is, if the King County District Attorney is willing to make a deal to the worst serial murderer in US history. Then the DA has set the bar level. You cant in good conscious, give life to one man for killing over thirty people and death to another for one. How do you think that is justice? One life is more valuable than thirty?

I don't know....I think spending life in prison with no chance of parole while bound to a wheelchair would be pretty appropriate punishment as well, even a little more miserable than death. I think they should schedule his execution for like 20 years from now so he always knows he is going to die young.

cyrixlord your incorrect, the reason 6 million Jews were marched to the death camps is because the National Socialist Party (NAZI) used class warfare and they listened to Stalin who said that one man with a gun can control a hundred people without one.

Give him the death penalty. It's going to cost too much of our tax dollars to keep him alive. Being that he is now handicapped, it will require more officers to tend to him. He is a useless waste of space.

Careful, my friends, enthusiasm by pro-death penalty advocates for the implementation of the death penalty resulted in the execution of over 6 million jews who never even got to a trial.

Its lunatics like this that make our cops so jumpy. We blame the cops for using too much force but how many of us have jobs were we face a sneak deadly ambush any time of the day? Maybe if you're a soldier in Afghanistan but no one here in the US has that kind of danger looming over them daily.

He deserves the death penalty. The slime ball Satturburg however, timed this so that the public will forget about his decision yesterday not to charge officer Cocaine. Satterburg will be investigated by the Feds for obstruction of justice and will be removed from office, hopefully by force. As for Monfort, no tears for you. Sadly the police are helping to create someone 10 times more violent than him.

What a waste of time & money.....the trial will run tens of thousands and then the state will pay around $15K a year to keep him on death row for 20 years before they get around to giving him what he really deserves. So much easier and fun to just throw em to the good ole SPD and they'll make sure justice is carried out and this dude will die a slow, painful death. Pure scum; doesn't deserve to be breathing.
