PORTLAND -- A man who planned to dribble a soccer ball from Seattle to Brazil was hit and killed while walking alongside the highway on the Oregon Coast.
Richard Swanson, 42, was walking along the southbound shoulder of Hwy 101 near Lincoln City when he was struck from behind by a pickup driven by 52-year-old Scott Van Hiatt.
Swanson was taken to a Lincoln City hospital, where he later died.
Police said Hiatt remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.
Swanson left the Space Needle at 6 a.m. on May 1 and hoped to make it to Sao Paulo in time for the 2014 World Cup.
His journey was to benefit One World Futbol, which benefits refugee camps, war zones, disaster areas and impoverished inner cities.
