DUVALL, Wash. -  The Washington Transportation Department inspected four or five bridges in east King County as a precaution because of the Tuesday morning earthquake in the Duvall-Carnation area. The City of Seattle also inspected key structures.

The small quake with a magnitude of 3.4 at 5:21 a.m. The University of Washington reported the quake was centered about three miles northwest of Carnation and was about four miles deep.

"The earthquake was small ... but it was quite shallow, " said Bill Steele of the University of Washington Seismology Lab. "It's because people were so close to the break that they felt it as intensely as they did."

The State Department of Transportation inspected the Truss Bridge at Snoquamie Falls, the Tolt River Bridge and the bridge in Fall City over the Snoqualmie River where SR 202/203 merge.

The Seattle Department of Transportation inspected the Alaskan Way Seawall, the Magnolia Bridge, the Ballard Bridge, the 15th Ave Interchange and the Spokane Street Swing Bridge.

No damage was reported.

More than 600 people responded to the "Did You Feel It?" page on the USGS Web site. Most of the responses came from Duvall, Carnation and Redmond.

"I was sleeping next to my husband when the bed started shaking, I looked over at him and he said 'earthquake!'" said Carnation Resident Karen Droppo.

Residents told TV stations the quake sounded like thunder or a door slamming, and the shaking felt like a train or truck rumbling by, rattling mirrors, causing hanging lamps to swing and scaring dogs and cats.

Residents began calling KING 5 News moments after the quake.

Elizabeth Bunn of Duvall said she felt the shake for what seemed like 30 seconds. She said it woke up everyone in the house.

Anne Schifsky, who lives in Mill Creek, said she was lying in bed watching TV when it hit. She said she heard things rattling, felt the bed shake. She said it lasted about 10 seconds.

There were no reports of injuries or damage.

"I don't expect so (to hear of any damage) and probably for the people who felt it for many seconds, it was really their building that kept swaying," said Steele. "The ground had stopped but the energy put into their building by that little quake rocked them back and forth a little longer."

Asked if the area should expect any aftershocks, Steele said it is possible but not any large ones.

"This was fairly small but on May 7th back in 1996 there was a 5.3 (quake) in this area, the Duvall Earthquake we called it," said  Steele. "Certainly this area can produce big earthquakes so it is certainly possible having a larger earthquake or some small ones. But with a 2.7 you wouldn't expect a vigorous aftershock sequence."

I state on another forum a few days ago that KING needed to have a 3.0 in the seattle area so they could have something to discuss for a few weeks instead of posting weeks / year old news as they've been doing (especially lately)

bridge inspections for a 3.4 ??? I guess a lot of overtime for WSDOT workers - and it will take the heat off of the ferry workers who have skimmed the $$$ .................. 3.4 earthquakes can relived plate stress and postpone a larger earthquake. ..... but not always. ............... don't give them any ideas or they will close the viaduct this weekend for "emergency earthquake inspections" - which will cost $$$ (and KING thought only ferry workers were scamming $$$)

First small earthquakes here are frequent- there has actually been a lessening of activity the last few weeks- nothing abnormal! We will have a big quake but this in no way means it is coming soon- a 3.4 is minor- hardly worth the drama but interesting and perhaps the media paranoia will help people atleast mentally prepare for what one day will be a major event! The earth is not currently experiencing any real sharp jump in earthquakes- the same amount is basically occurrring as expected- its just the population areas that have been hit that make it seem so strange! Dont look for anything else- the earth is doing what it has always done- and will always do! you can look up daily earthquakes around the world at the pacific northwest seismic network run by the USGS and the university of Washington- great source of knowledge and real time data!

This is ridiculous! The bridges are fine out here! There was hardly even a rattle so I'm not sure where they are getting this 3.4 magnitude. But apparently everyone in Washington state could feel it! Gosh, it must be a slow news day. Haha.

shrocat - the 3.4 will postpone the 7.0 for hours - weeks but a 7.0 will happen in the NW very soon - likely before the end of summer. The ground has been rumbling for several days and nothing has been reported / said about it.

While interesting the quake was not out of the ordinary. We live in an active earthquake area. There have been thousands of quakes over the past 20 years, most smaller than this, but a few have been bigger. This quake is most likely not a precursor of any other quake.

I live in Snoqualmie Ridge and it woke up my teenage daughter and myself. The rest of the family didn't wake up though. It was quick, but a definite shake and made the house creek.

At least KING is reporting current news instead of events that happened weeks (or even years) ago. Te 3. will give them something to talk about for awhile. I knew it was coming - I have felt earth rumblings over the past week. The 7.0 will happen soon too.

Seattle needs to heed the warnings of all the small ones we've been having and all the large that have been happening else where... I think we will have another fairly big one sooner or later

I can't imagine people in even Fall City feeling this quake, let alone Mill Creek. It felt like something had fallen down in the house and that's it. Nothing too alarming.

Woke me and the dogs up in Mill Creek. Didn't know why until I heard about it on the news though.

Felt it in Sammamish. Very light shaking but it woke me up. Didn't realize it was an earthquake, thought it might have been a gust of wind as it was really quick.
