Seattle skyscrapers may start posting billboards

SEATTLE - The City of Seattle is considering a change to the current sign code which would permit big, bright billboards on skyscrapers. It would allow big companies, leasing at least 200,000 square feet, to put a large sign on all four sides of a skyscraper.

Bryan Stevens with the city's Department of Planning and Development says the idea is "to retain and attract our large scale business owners and tenants."

But, critics say the proposal would take Seattle's clean, pristine skyline and brand it with billboards lit up with corporate names.

"It's a skyline that's collectively owned by all of us and suddenly it becomes privately marked." says architect, author and urban planner Mark Hinshaw.

Activists have already filed a legal challenge saying the billboard proposal would adversely impact the environment. The question is before a Seattle hearing examiner.

Well I have to assume that Seattle City Fathers have just won the lottery somewhere and have money to spend, spend, spend and burn, and did I say spend? Really, Mr. Mayor and City Councilors, who is going to pay the electric bill for this kind of a thing? Oh, we don't need to worry about it, right? The people, who are already cash strapped, as most of us in America are today...the people can pay the extra bucks for the additonal LIGHT POLLUTION, yes? Again, I must assume then the city fathers have not thought this through? They haven't learned that too much light generated outside can do wonderously bad things for both people and the local ecology? Or that light that goes horizontally is called GLARE? And did I mention again THE COST? Funny that this is an election year isn't it? Please, find out who is in favor and VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Rather than allowing corporate greed to inundate us with ads, how about putting up uplifting messages of hope and peace. A little kindness goes a long way.

Wouldn't that make a great post card? A skyline with a bunch of bill boards.

Anyone want to donate money to my cause? I am going to buy and construct a giant "Vote NO to large billboards" sign to encourage people not to allow this to happen. So far I got half my donations from Microsoft, Starbucks and Boeing, but under the condition that I leave space above my sign for their logos. Oh, in addition for a sign this large, clear channel says I must put their logo below my sign to be union compliant...

It will add an element of cheap and tacky eye sores to an otherwise sophisticated skyline. If you want to see how alot of bill boards look drive on n. division in spokane.

Well, building owners have to pay their taxes somehow. . . . .im all for it. Everyone thats against it can have their property taxes raised to compensate. Most of Inner cities are Graffiti anyhow. . .why not make it a little tougher on the hoodlums.

Great idea... first the Seattle City Council would not allow Advertising on Public toilets. Even though it would have paid for the toilets. So they went and spent several millions dollars of tax payer money instead. Now, it would be OK to advertise the Condom Depot on a Sky Scraper.... :)

NOT in my town! Advertising is bad enough already. Even the cup holders at Safeco Field having sponsor advertising. In many men's restrooms you stare at advertising in front of your face while standing at the urinals. Capitalism run a muck! If billboards on our skyscrapers are needed to "to retain and attract our large scale business owners and tenants" Seattle is in big trouble.

Well of course they have to do this. How else can they keep their ridiculous salaries, pensions, medical benefits, etc etc...The leadership in this entire state is a joke, their ONLY concern is their own inflated paychecks. When we are paying over $200K a year for ONE King County Deputy, there is a serious problem.

"It's a skyline that's collectively owned by all of us and suddenly it becomes privately marked." Really? I'm pretty sure the public does not own the skyline.
