Should Paine Field go commercial? County debates once again

EVERETT, Wash. - Today it's quiet around Everett's Paine Field.  And that's the way many of the airport's neighbors like it.

Paine Field is a place of contrasts.  This one-time Air Force base hosts the world's biggest aerospace company, Boeing.  Boeing's built  the world's biggest building on Paine's periphery, and it's Boeing's giant Everett plant that builds what was the world's biggest passenger jet, the 747. And just for the record,  Paine Field has also played host to the world's biggest plane during air shows,  the Russian built  Antonov 225.

But while Paine is synonymous with BIG on so many levels, it's what Paine Field isn't that also stands out.  If you want to catch a flight to Paris or Prineville, forget it. Special passenger flights will leave from Paine on occasion, but there's nothing scheduled, and again, that's the way a lot of the neighbors like it.

For neighbor Vern Ashbrenner, who lives west of the flight path north of the airport,  turning Paine into the "Sea-Tac of the North" would violate his understanding of a longstanding  agreement that was designed to keep Paine as an industrial and general aviation airport . For years, neighbors and other opponents of commercial air service banded together as the Save Our Communities organization to keep it that way.

But business interests in the county are pushing to open Paine up to as many as 8,000 scheduled flights a year.  Both Horizon and Allegiant are expressing interest in serving Portland, Spokane and Las Vegas out of the airport.  Can economic development in Snohomish County get to the next level, if executives and customers all have to navigate hair raising traffic through Seattle in order to get to a flight out of Sea-Tac, which is well over an hour away even when traffic is flowing?

How effectively opponents can fight commercial flights may partly depend on three public hearings with the FAA. The first meeting was Monday night at 6 p.m. The next one is at Meadowdale High School on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the PUD auditorium in Everett, and a third meeting is on Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Lynnwood Convention Center*.

The Federal Aviation Administration has changed the location of the third public hearing scheduled to accept comments on the draft environmental assessment pertaining to two proposals for commercial air service at Snohomish County's Paine Field Airport.

*Change of location (as of 01/05/10)

The Jan. 21 public hearing will now be held at Kamiak High School, 10801 Harbour Pointe Boulevard, Mukilteo, instead of the Lynnwood Convention Center. The public hearing will still begin at 6 p.m. and follow formats used during the Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 hearings.

Allow commerical aircraft, but limit it to commuter flights only, Also provide a train from everett station to Seatac, with parking.

I grew up in the Everett area and got my private pilot's license at Paine Field. Aircraft today are already much quieter than those in the past. There are federal regulations regarding the noise any aircraft can produce at takeoff and landing. Did those of you that are complaining about the noise visit your perspective home on a foggy or rainy day and not hear the aircraft next door? Didn't you have to sign some notice telling you that you live next to a commercial airport? What happens with Southwest starts looking to Paine Field for some of its satellite operations? Allegiant Air in Bellingham started as one flight a day to Las Vegas and is now up to 5 or 6 a day to places all along the west coast. I'll tell you what will happen. I will be on board. People in Mukilteo need to make some real money and move to Medina so they can be whiny with those that complain every time they are refereed to as Bellevue.

It's going to happen sooner or later whether the residents like it or not. I know everyone living around Paine Field couldn't care less about whether hundreds of thousands of hours could be saved over time through shorter travel times for commuters, but you bought homes around a gem of a commercial airport. Anyone with half a brain would consider the distinct possibility of increased air traffic at some point if they bought a home in that area. It's pretty common for residents around any airport to complain about increased traffic, and it's pretty common throughout recent history for most of them to be ground under the bulldozer of demand.

Paine Field should have been a public commercial airport 30 years ago. Get on with it!!!

How wonderful for us living in the north end to be able to catch a commuter flight from our own back yard. Absolutely - bring on Horizon and Allegiant. I live in the flight path of Paine Field when aircraft take off to the south or land from the south. No problem. In fact I remember when it was an active air force base with deltawing fighter jets stationed there, and, I might add, some exciting air shows. Paine Field is an under-used airport. The little Cessnas hardly account for much activity. Besides, the airport was there first. Nobody forced these people to buy or build their homes near Paine Field. It was their choice.

This is crazyness, paine field doesn't have a terminal so that will cost money to build. Where are you going to park all cars. I work at Paine Field this is a concern to me. More traffic on the Speedy way just what we need. Imagine a three day week with the traffic to the South Island traffic and the flyers. The area would need major traffic upgrades to handle the added traffic in the area. Show me the full cost be for you show me all the profit so i can make a educated choice.

kimdwan- Did you own your home before Boeing and Paine field were there? No? Then you have no valid complaint. This will be an FAA decision HA HA! You are asking for support for your local business? How about Horizon? They are a local home grown company too!

7. It is a free market if the demand is there let it happen. If only one location was good enough; we would have only one of each store in the region. Vashon Island would only have service to one dock instead of two, etc... 8. Anything that helps airlines grow is potentialy good for Boeing (more orders) so if anything Western Washington should do anything to assist the airlines/Boeing! I very much dislike NIMBY's!

1. The economic impact from air service is significant. 2. A Horizon CRJ or Dash-8Q400 are WAY less noise than a city bus or lawnmower. 3, Boeing operates the 747 Dreamlifter all new production aircraft for test flight, high speed taxi tests, and engine tests which are all WAY louder than any aircraft Aleegiant or Horizon would operate. 4. When Boeing decided to build the Everett plant they did so because it was out of the way, had plenty of room to grow, etc... The only people that MAYBE have a right to even say something is those who have owned houses in the area PRE-BOEING! 5. I live under the SEA-TAC flightline within 3/4of a mile from the end of the runways; aircraft are silent compared to even 10 years ago. 6. If it is such a BIG DEAL put a curfew on the flights such as Orange County and also restrict the aircraft to only the Quitest. WARNING though if you were to do this BYE BYE BOEING!

Bad Traffic to SeaTac is no reason to put an airport in your own back yard! I have lived in the Puget Sound area for more than 20 years, go to SeaTac at least 12 times per year, and never spend more than an hour getting there because I wisely choose to fly outside of peak traffic times - it's not that hard! I even lived in Marysville for 3 years and never spent more than 50 minutes to and from SeaTac. Allowing commercial traffic at Paine Field WILL NOT turn SnoHo county into an economic gem - wake up! We'll lose more in property taxes than we gain. People who live near Paine Field now and pay large property taxes, spend money at grocery stores and gas stations, fitness centers and daycares, dry cleaners and restaurants will slowly leave and then what are we left with? A filthy, loud, polluted airport! A few low paid workers handling baggage and working the tarmac. Don't destroy your own neighborhoods - NO COMMERCIAL traffic at Paine Field!

The fact that Horizon Air is going to all-prop airplanes means a quieter take-off and landing. Also, if there are 10 flights per day, how many cars will that remove from the I-5 commute from Snohomish County to Sea Tac? I vote YES - let's accept commercial airline traffic!

You all talk about the quality of life in that area? I live on Casino Rd. I live 3/4 of 1 mile from the north end of Paine Field. The Jet engines being tested all night everynight at Boeing are nothinhg compared to the little planes that circle the airport practicing landing and for what ever reason they circle ... with NO MUFFLERS on every sunny day...even on the weekends. And that's all nothing compared to the sirens , gun shots, rice burnner street racers and the boom boom cars that go up and down Casino Rd. Now that's quality life!

Yep... i support the plan. Since 2001, the FAA & TSA (for very good reasons) have kept me hostage at my Everett home because it is more of a hassle to fly to see relatives than it is to not see relatives ---& 700,000 other folks in Snohomish County are held hostage by the city of Mukilteo as well. If Seattle wants to lower their gridlock, this plan makes sense. Of course we have to deal with the wanna-bee rich in Mukilteo, who are very adamant upon the selfishness they bought home next to major airport & squeel like a piggy later.

I live 2 miles directly SW of Paine Field, and I STRONGLY SUPPORT commercial flights at Paine Field. Paine Field was built in 1936 and it has ALWAYS been authorized as a commercial airport. Furthermore, all the money the Federal Government has spent on Paine Field REQUIRES that it be available for use as a Commercial airport. 99% of those who live in the "shadow" of Paine field have moved in since 1936. If those 99% want to stop commercial flights, then let them take up a collection and pay all the millions of dollars back that Paine has received from the Federal Government. The anti--Paine field crowd is just a bunch of whining NIMBY's

I'm sure an okay of this plan will bring more and more flights in and out of Paine Field every year. But....as a person who lives in Seattle I would definitely like those who live to the north of Seattle have some other airport to use. It's somewhat inconvenient for all those people to have to pass through downtown Seattle when they travel by plane. I'm sure most of them agree...other than those who live close to Paine Field and don't want more air traffic in their neighborhoods.

Weil I am going to "vote" NO on it because it just opens Pandora's box for more and more flights and pretty soon the quality of life in this area will go downhill. It is inevitable.

Paine field should be a Public airport open to commercial Flights. I dont want to see Internatinal flights landing from Japan or from England , But Yes a Regional airport with west coast and commuter flights. It only makes sense. I spent a lot of time working this last summer on the Airport property andthe modern jet engines are not that Loud.

Yes can you think of any good reason a person living in Marysville north should have to drive to Sea Tac to get a flight? This is all politics that should have been quashed years ago.
