GRAYLAND, Wash. - Washaway Beach got its name for the powerful surf that has steadily been removing a small community south of Grayland Washington. Now that same surf has given something back - the remains of a mystery ship.
The remains of a 100-foot-long vessel have been uncovered along the sandy high bank.
It's partially hidden by the dozens of uprooted trees deposited on the beach during a powerful New Years storm.
While locals have been strolling out to take a look, maritime buffs, including Dan Sears of the Aberdeen Museum of History, have been thumbing through records, maps and consulting with historians to try and identify the ship.
"It sounds like it could be the Canadian Exporter," said Sears who went on to explain the Exporter ran aground and broke in half during a storm in August of 1921.
At least one other maritime historian agrees.
It will take much more examination to determine if it was indeed the Exporter, but for shipwreck hobbyists, it's another interesting find on a section of the southern Washington coast known for claiming scores of ships for more than 200 years.
