WHITE CENTER, Wash. -- King County sheriff's deputies are searching for the driver who hit a pedestrian with his car and then took off in Seattle's White Center neighborhood.

The incident happened around 1:45 a.m. Thursday near 14th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Roxbury Street.  Deputies think the driver was coming off Delridge Way before striking the victim.

Witnesses said the victim flew about 30 feet after being hit.

"I don't know if he flew or got carried, but approximately 30 feet from the crosswalk," said Det. Syb Hiemstra, King County Sheriff's Dept. "Did he get carried that far and roll off the hood? Did he get knocked that far? That I don't know."

The victim, a 55-year-old Seattle man, suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators were examining evidence left behind by the vehicle, believed to be a dark colored. No other information was given about the vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

@bazwest, have you looked at these studies that say the presence of a Red light camera "causes" more accidents? Most of them say that what happens is a change in type of accidents. Without the camera, you see a greater number of head on and side impact accidents, which are more serious in the types and extent of injuries. With the camera the type of accidents tend to be rear enders. Injuries are lessened and less deadly. The cause of the accident also changes from people running lights a the cause, to inattentive drivers, following to close, speeding.

Witnesses said he flew 30 feet but the detective says he doesn't know if he flew or was carried. Great police work. Ignore the witnesses.

@crich. Red light cameras cause as many accidents as they prevent as people suddenly brake to avoid a ticket. They are not a viable solution to rule breakers. Officers occasionally monitoring trouble spots and pulling over offenders is far more effective. Red light cameras are only about one thing--raising revenue.

Why are people so against red light cameras? Gee, I wonder? First of all, the people are not really worried about their rights, they are worried about being caught breaking the law, which they already know they are doing, they just don't want to be caught doing it. Second thing is that this state is still giving drivers licenses to undocumented aliens. If one of these people hits a pedestrian or injures someone while driving, they have a lot of motivation to flee the scene. Most drive with no insurance which is a crime. They may be on drugs or drunk. Why would they want to stop? When will this state wake up and stop issuing licenses to people who don't buy insurance and don't stop when they get in accidents? Even people with no documentation problems are leaving the scenes of accidents because people are simply refusing to take responsibility for their mistakes. We need more cameras to help solve these crimes.
