TACOMA, Wash. -- Five elderly peace activists who broke into Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in 2009 to protest nuclear weapons were sentenced Monday in Tacoma federal court.

The sentences for the activists, who range in age from 61 to 84 years, varied from two to 15 months each:

  • 61-year-old Jesuit priest Stephen Kelly of Oakland, Calif., was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
  • 67-year-old retired teacher Susan Crane of Baltimore was sentenced to 15 months.
  • 82-year-old Jesuit priest Bill Bichsel of Tacoma was sentened to 3 months.
  • 84-year-old Sister Anne Montgomery of Redwood City, Calif., was sentenced to 2 months.
  • 61-year-old social worker Lynne Greenwald of Tacoma was sentenced to 6 months.

Court documents said the group, referred to by some as the "Bangor Five," cut through fences on November 2, 2009, to reach an area near where nuclear warheads are stored in bunkers. The weapons facility in Puget Sound assembles and maintains nuclear-tipped Trident missiles and other weapons.

The protesters put up banners, scattered sunflower seeds and prayed until they were arrested.

A jury found them guilty for a number of crimes including conspiracy, trespass and destruction of government property.  Each activist had faced a possible ten year sentence.

Montgomery said in a sentencing document filed last week that she and others have taken responsibility for their actions.

"I have the solace of my conscience," said Kelly. "I think this is just one little step against nuclear weapons. And someday we'll be free. Maybe not in my lifetime,  but I have hope."

"I felt grateful for the opportunity to stand up," said Greenwald. "And whether or not I got o prison isn't the issue. It's that we do everything we can to stop nuclear weapons from being used."

The five defendants said nuclear warheads stored and on submarines at the base are illegal under international, national and humanitarian law, but a judge prohibited them from using international law and the lethality of nuclear weapons as a defense. The trial hinged on straightforward charges relating to trespassing and property damage.

There were risks when these elderly citizens took a stand... from getting shot at, to traumatizing the base guards. But the message, at least for them, far outweighed the risks (the risk that only materialized was serving time). The message I take away is this: our system can be so caught up in the business and politics of making weapons... we lose sight that we have just stockpiled weapons of mass destruction... millions of dollars spent... firepower and destruction that is quite unimaginable... in the hands of some politicians and military personnel... God have mercy.

My understanding is that a priest is someone who leads religious activities in a church and tries to save souls. The idiot Bichsel has done nothing but be a professional protester for the last 50 years.. Put him away and forget about him or better yet send him to Libya and let him protest the current murderous government there.

Cutting the fense was wrong. Trespassing onto government property and putting up signs was wrong. Sowing sunflower seeds is unbelievablly heinous. I'm hoping they will all get time off for good behavior. They accomplished what they intended. They got attention for their cause and they did it without harming anyone. They are brilliant and courageous. They stood up for what they believe in and are willing to face the consequences.

@klondiko: Indeed, war does suck. You know what else sucks? Bullies... There have always been people out there who prey on the weak, to take advantage or exploit them for their own personal gain. You know what stops a bully? Fear... I weigh about 300 lbs, and am fairly broad shouldered -- I am very easy going, but throughout my life, people have always been a little intimidated by me. That always makes me laugh, because it's not my personality at all, but still, it's a fact. I don't worry about getting attacked walking down the street, because bullies don't prey on 300 lb guys who can easily snap them like a twig. Look at dictators around the world, and you see several common themes -- subjugate people to you, control what they are allowed to listen to, read and watch in media, use armies and fear to keep that control. Dictators don't ask people for control, they take it -- they're bullies. As long as you are the 300 lb guy, the bully will look for someone else...

They should all have gotten 10 years. Yes, it would be wonderful to get rid of all nuclear weapons but the United States certainly cannot start any unilateral disarmament. In the world is today, with nuclear nations increasing, we need every nuclear defense we have. Where I live I see the Trident nuclear subs frequently and am always thankful for them and the men who man them to protect us all and grateful when they come home to their families. Nuclear disarmament would be national suicide. These people were not thinking clearly and by breaking in to Bangor they certainly gave away some tips to terrorists as to how to do it. Bangor authorities must certainly have been horrified and embarrassed at this indefensible lack of security and some should have been relieved of command. Let us hope that the base is now so securely locked down that even a mouse cannot sneak in, and that guards have been given adequate weapons and orders to shoot intruders on sight.

Along the lines of sentencing....Willie Nelson will be offered a plea deal. 100 dollar fine and he has to sing one of his songs in court for possession of 6 ounces of weed. Really cracking the whip on this guy. Check out CNN for that.

The original hippies. The sentence is appropriate for the crime. No matter if its an elderly retired nun or a twentysomething anarchist protesting in the exact semi-peaceful manner. No time off for the elderly, they should know better than to destroy government property especially since I paid for that fence with my taxes. And, yes, I do support their right to protest. And I do wish there were no nukes. But since we do have nukes, the fence needs to keep everyone out who doesn't belong there.

Does anyone seriously believe that the US would have used nuclear weapons against Japan if Japan had been able to retaliate in kind? No. Nuclear weapons are used only against countries that would be rendered helpless by them. A warning to those who think unilateral disarmament will promote peace. To the contrary, it would almost certainly lead to world war and the death of millions of Americans. There are crazy people out there. Some, such as Kim Il Sung, already have nuclear weapons. Imagine Ghadafi with nukes. Or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has already said that he is destined to bring about Armageddon. He is actively seeking nuclear weapons. How can anyone believe that unilateral disarmament will promote peace?

Dori, they broke onto a military installation which houses nuclear weapons and is home to several trident class submarines. The state of the world these days makes it difficult if not impossible to identify who is and who is not a threat. They could have been shot on site. Bangor in particular is a much more sensitive military installation because of the nukes it holds. While I support their cause, their actions were absolutely stupid and did nothing for their cause.

Whether they'll admit or not, violence (unfortunately) has solved more conflicts than all else...it led to the creation of the world's (formerly) Number Two economy, Japan, drawn out of centuries of warrior based feudalism isolationism. Also, wasn't the Jesuit Order bankrupted for raping Indian kids? Maybe they had the 'gay priests problem' also, being so radically liberal....

Its tough when you get older. They didnt get a serious sentence because they may not last long enough for the sentence. They should do something constructive, like being taken to high schools in shackles, pink jumpers and give a presentation in front of the students and staff saying "We broke into a military facility and we are lucky we were not shot on site as the guards have loaded weapons"...... Then doing KP at a messhall is a good idea, wash trays, dishes, scrub the heads with tooth brushes and then brush your teeth with them, then take them out and give them and run their azzes off in a 2 mile run while holding broom handles above their heads and then head them back in to the messhall and have them lift the milk containers above their heads and run around the messhall. Give them those chores for 10 years, if they live that long.

If you believe something is wrong then you have a moral imperative to protest it. These people believe that nuclear weapons are wrong. I happen to agree with them and applaud their actions. They've said they knew they would very likely go to prison for their actions and were willing to accept that. That's the nature of civil disobedience.

I am sorry but these elderly criminals of trespass should be fined and told to go home and stay out of trouble. If we incarcerate them they will cost the state a lot of money, more so because of their age and what will become declining health stuck in a prison. In lieu of prison give them 25 hours a week of community service for the length of time they should serve behind bars. This case begs for common sense. Fine them for court costs and any damage they left behind.
