SEATTLE  - Patricia Paschal used her self defense skills June 2, on her 68th birthday, as she walked home from the Southeast Seattle Senior Center in the Rainier Valley.

Paschal sensed someone was close behind her and, when she turned around, a young man grabbed her shoulders.

She had just recently learned how to handle the situation after one class of self-defense at the senior center.

Paschal started hitting the young man. He backed off in surprise, but returned to the attack. Paschal had pulled out a kitchen knife that she carries in her purse as she walks through the Rainier Valley. Seeing the knife the man once again backed off.

"I kept calm. That's what Mark told us to do." said Paschal, speaking about her self-defense instructor, Mark Bryant.

"She did the right thing." said Bryant, who has taught the class for five years at the senior center. "The attacker thought he was attacking an easy target, a vulnerable old woman, she surprised him."

Perhaps the point to take away frrom this story is not how big the woman's knife is but the fact that she had a chance to produce it since she had the self-defense skills of being aware of her surroundings and, when initially assaulted by this creep, the presence of mind to slap his hands off of her so she could, if necessary (and it was), get her sheathed knife out when the moron didn't back off. I think it's great that the Southeast Seattle Senior Center on Rainier and Holly (where Mark Bryant teaches the class) had the good sense to offer a class like this one; maybe other community centers and senior residences will follow their lead.

I agree with pelindaba. . . .It is illegal to defend yourself anymore ya know. She should have felt sorry for the poor little drug addicted punk and just let him blacken her face & steal all she had. <<--Sarcasm.

I am surprised she is not under arrest for carrying and brandishing a deadly weapon. I would be frightened of the possibility of arrest for carrying a large knife. I guess it must ok if you are female.

I had my daughter enrolled at the Safety First course in Tacoma for youth this past year and then I took their one day course for adults. I DO NOT WORRY ABOUT MY DAUGHTER WALKING HOME!!!!! If you have a child get them enrolled ASAP. It could save their life.

Glad the guy ran off. If it'd been the "wrong" person--someone crazy or who really wanted her for some reason--it might have turned out really bad.

Wow, good for her. Way to go. However I would not ever want to live where she does for any reason. That area is a cesspool for crime.
