WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash, issued the following statement on the guilty verdict in the murder trial of Amanda Knox:

"I am saddened by the verdict and I have serious questions about the Italian justice system and whether anti-Americanism tainted this trial. The prosecution did not present enough evidence for an impartial jury to conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that Ms. Knox was guilty. Italian jurors were not sequestered and were allowed to view highly negative news coverage about Ms. Knox. Other flaws in the Italian justice system on display in this case included the harsh treatment of Ms. Knox following her arrest; negligent handling of evidence by investigators; and pending charges of misconduct against one of the prosecutors stemming from another murder trial.

I am in contact with the U.S. Ambassador to Italy and have been since the time of Ms. Knox's arrest. I will be conveying my concerns to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. I have also been in touch with the Embassy of Italy in Washington, DC.

Last I heard, Ms. Cantwell wasn't there in Italy for the last year sitting thru all the testimony there in court. Cantwell needs to get herself back to Washington DC and do her own job! Congress has yet to pass the annual appropriation bills that fund the federal government for the current fiscal year began October 1 and which is almost 1/4 over now.

Wow, it’s really astonishing how many commentators and politicians in the US feel that they’re ready to judge about this verdict and Italian justice system in general without neither having read any of the thousand and thousand pages of the trial records nor having the slightest idea of how the Italian justice system actually works! Yet more astonishing, they seem to ignore or to forget that also an Italian citizen was found guilty in this trial. Is he maybe a victim sacrificed at the altar of Italian anti-Americanism?

Sen. Maria Cantwell said: “The prosecution did not present enough evidence for an impartial jury to conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that Ms. Knox was guilty” This statement shows her ignorance of law in other countries. This statement is only true in the US and this is not always good as OJ’s trial showed. In Italy if there is any doubt then you are guilty. I do not understand why no one grasps that concept. It is actually very efficient. In order for Ms. Knox to win she will have to show without any doubt that she was not part of the crime. Good luck!

Coming from someone who represents a state and country that couldn't keep a person like Maurice Clemmons behind bars, Cantwell's comments mean nothing. Maybe she should read Judge Micheli's initial report on the murder of Meredith Kercher. And there were TWO people prosecuting this case in the trial, not just one. Xenophopia is alive and well in Washington State and the treatment of Italy and it's justice system is as equally appalling as the treatment that the Knox/Mellas family say that Amanda received. What a bunch of hypocrites and liars they are, so steeped in denial. The only people who have shown dignity, class and grace through this entire tragedy have been the Kercher family. They haven't made complete fools out of themselves all over the place and my heart breaks for them their real loss. At least Amanda and Raeffle are alive. And I agree that if Amanda and Raeffle are innocent, then so is Rudy Guede. If Raffaele's DNA on the bra clasp was contaminated, then so was his.

Hillary should put Cantwell in her place pronto. Italians died in Iraq and Afghanistan for what? To have their institutions and officials demeaned by a Senator who has no clue about the evidence in the case except what Knox's attorney and PR firm tell her.

Senator Cantwell disrespects Italy and its institutions with her defamatory comments about the Knox case. She is willingly pandering and shilling for Knox's Seattle PR firm which just happens to do a lot of political hit jobs during campaign season. Shame Maria.

Where has the State Dept. been all this time? This girl is a US citizen. Why has our own government left her out to dry? We are willing to send in former President Bill Clinton to North Korea to help free those two journalists, but w can't even lift finger to help out Amanda Knox? All I hear is Cantwell sayingshe will do this, or talk to this person, but all I'm seeing is just TALK!!! Quit releasing press statements of what your going to say, and just siply do something. Show more action and stop just talking please.

Why is it Cantwell can comment about this case buy is way to busy to hold town meetings or communicate with her constituents about such mundane issues as the health insurance legislation and the war in Afghanistan? Maybe she should move to Italy and tell them how to conduct a trial, she has about the same qualifications to do that as she does to be a senator. Merry Christmas everyone!

Were you also saddened by the Rudy Guede verdict? Did you listen to all of the evidence? Were the jurors also allowed to view the highly positive news coverage about Ms. Knox from King 5? Basically you're calling the jury partial. I hope you have the facts to back that up Senator.
