SEATTLE -- The King County Housing Authority reports a record number of families with children and veterans have applied for subsidized low-income housing. The demand is far greater than the supply of Section 8 vouchers currently available.

The county is holding a lottery next month to update the 2007 waiting list for Section 8. More than 25,000 households applied for subsidized rent. That's more than twice as many as four years ago. Of the applicant households, nearly 23,000 are children and more than 1,000 are veterans.

Only a small fraction of the applicants will get subsidies. Of the 25,000 applicants, one-tenth will make it on the 2011 waiting list. Only 50 or so will get Section 8 vouchers right away.

The application process is now closed and there won't be another opportunity to apply for four years. Next month's lottery will determine who will be lucky enough to either get housing , or get on the waiting list.

@ inforelife... can't agree with you more... we got a huge budget issue, and no one is addressing the illegal immigrants benefits... why are why continuing to pay for them when our own people (veterans) are in desperate need?

azziza, Some will move back to Mexico, Some will move in with the many Illegals that got the Vouchers. Ether way, they will still continue to mow lawns, pick up scrap metal, and throw their empty Bud Light cans everywhere.

Nice. You serve your country and then all you get is a place in line for sect 8? The hard question is what happens to the 22,500 households that don't make the lottery?
