After a four-year closure, Seattle’s South Park Bridge is set to reopen on June 30.

Neighbors may not see the giant gears and counterbalances cranking away in the deep chambers of the new bridge, but they can see a little bit of the old ones up top.

“The artist did a good job of salvaging parts and they’re all on display here on the rail,” said Tim Lane, Deputy Engineer.

All the old gears and rails were rescued, cleaned up and installed on the bridge railings. The architects tried to keep the design as similar as possible, while adding extras and making the new bridge much stronger and more earthquake-resistant than the old one.

They are nice touches, but for Elvis Martinez, the bridge is his last chance to make a go of it in the tire business.

“Now is the time you know. I really hope it gets better you know?” he said.
