SEATTLE -- Seattle Public Utilities will update a city council committee Tuesday on its efforts to replace hundreds of storm drains that are hazardous to bicyclists.

During the past couple years, the city has surveyed thousands of storm drains along the city's bike routes.  More than 1,000 were considered hazardous enough to warrant replacement.  About two-thirds of those drains have already been replaced.

The most hazardous drains have broken or missing pieces, which can force bicyclists to move into traffic with little notice.

Other older drains are designed in a way that makes it easy for bicycle wheels to get caught.

"They were perfect for grabbing your front wheel and throwing you down the street," said David Hiller, advocacy director for the Cascade Bicycle Club.

Hiller applauded the city for working to replace the most troublesome drains, which have injured people in Seattle.

"More often than not, you're looking at property damage and bumps and bruises," Hiller said.  "But we have encountered individuals who've had serious, permanent, lasting injuries."

The biggest danger to bike riders is their own stupidity. They are mostly unaware that traffic rules apply to them as well as motor vehicles. And as for the drains, they must be either blind or inattentive. Sorry mayor, but there are not enough silly looking riders in their skinny pants to swing the next election in your direction.

Waste of money, the way to fix this COSTS NOTHING !! .... REQUIRE A HELMET !! .... THEN STEER AROUND HAZARDS !!!! ..... This is just more politicians taking "kickbacks" & lower life forms that can't pass the test for a drivers license or had it revoked for any number of reasons.

I think it's funny that they are cutting school programs and emergency first responders, but God forbid we tell bicyclists to watch where they are going! I hope these people don't breed. We don't need their genes thrown into the pool just so we can have more asinine behavior to deal with. Perhaps the existing gutters are Darwins way of dealing with problem?

seriously this is what the city is wasting its time and money on? I can think of a few other things that they could focus on.
