SEATTLE – Police are searching for a hit and run driver who took off after hitting a bicyclist early Friday morning, but a witness saw it happen and led police to the truck involved.

It happened around 2 a.m. in the 5200 block of East Marginal Way S. Officers say both the cyclist and truck were traveling in the left lane heading southbound when the driver allegedly hit the cyclist from behind.

The cyclist, 25, went to the ground when his tire burst. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries, although he had not been wearing a helmet.

Police at the scene say another driver followed the truck to get the license plate. Officers located and impounded the truck, but the driver has not been found.

Last week, another hit and run driver killed bicyclist Mike Wang in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood. A $1,000 reward is being offered by Crime Stoppers to find that driver.

@Stonetrails. If you cannot ID the driver, the owner has no liability for the crime.

The rash of bicycle and pedestrian strikes is unfortunate and I am all for wearing a bicycle helmet to reduce injuries when a fall occurs. But, whether or not the bicyclists is wearing a helmet doesn't inform us about road safety. It would be more useful to know how many cars involved in collisions have tinted windows and whether the people involved were impaired.

this is why cyclists and cars should not share roads.

Something isn't right!! Two hit and run bicyclist within a week? The death of the bicyclist recently was so sad..Luckily this one did get hurt or killed. I wonder about cyclist that don't wear helmets? If they don't wear the helmets, it makes me assume they don't follow the rules of the road and doing things to annoy drivers.. I've had problems with cyclist who take up to much space in the road which doesn't allow one to get around them safely..

@eastsiderocks - Either you had no lawyer, or you had an idiot for a lawyer. I assure you, if you ID a specific vehicle involved in a crime, such as hit and run, you can prosecute the owner of the vehicle. Unless of course that vehicle was properly reported stolen prior to the accident.

Unless you can ID the driver, there's not much you can do. Someone did a hit and run on my truck. I got the make, model, and license plate numbers. Nothing happened because neither my friend or I could ID the driver.

Whoa, kbbcoop, what reality do you live in where cyclists don't have insurance, or pay taxes? I want to go to there because in the reality I live in, where I also own a car, I pay all the same taxes and fees that you do to pay for the roads you drive your car on and share with us cyclists. And same as you, I see plenty of cyclists do knucklhead stuff that is dangerous. But I also see plenty of knucklehead drivers - who have insurance, pay taxes, and have licenses - do dangerous things that put my life in danger. All the insurance, laws, licenses, taxes, etc., haven't solved that problem. Also, a little history: there were bicycles before there were cars so in essence we are sharing the road with you ; )

This will continue to happen forever, with or without insurance. With or without two foot wide bike lanes.

Whose brainiac idea was it to let bicyclists on the roads anyway? No insurance, no license, no fees, no taxes, and anytime there is an accident its ALWAYS the driver of the cars fault. I've seen these bicyclists weave in and out, run red lights, go up on sidewalks then back down, darting in and out, its a miracle more of them are not run over.

I wonder why a cyclist is in the left lane (with no helmet on no less). I would assume they were about to make a left turn.

Unfortunately when the criminal is finally caught their crime will likely be plead down by the lenient Prosecution Office. The cyclist was behaving very stupidly by not wearing a helmet in this region. Too many drivers in this area have no consideration for cyclists.

Well get your toys off the road. No insurance, no road privileges. Riding a bike on the road especially at night is as stupid as walking across the road with out looking.

The driver is an idiot on multiple levels. First, if it was legitimately his or her car and they fled, was probably in a frenzied panic due to not wanting to be caught because they were drinking or doing drugs. Hello, your fingerprints are all over the car, and they got your plate and Vin # duh. Second, if it was a stolen car, your prints are still all over the vehicle and if you are in the database, kiss your freedom goodbye cause they will eventually find you. Unless of course if you are an illegal in a stolen car and have called friends asking them to hide you. Third and foremost there are cameras on almost every street these days and chances are one of them has filmed you. You WILL be caught. Big Brother is watching!
