The Pacific Northwest is home to the smartest city in the U.S.

Seattle, Washington, has been named most literate city by Jack Miller, President of Central Connecticut State University.

Miller’s research focused on newspaper circulation, number of bookstores, library resources, periodical publishing resources, educational attainment and internet resources.

Rounding out the top five were Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, Atlanta and Boston.

Seattle finished second in the study the previous year. Portland did not make the top 10 in 2007, but finished sixth in the latest study.

I've lived in several major cities, including Seattle. I think Seattle has more savvy, intelligent people on the whole than either Los Angeles or San Francisco. Most are a bit too far left-leaning for my tastes, but that is the norm for west coast cities. I always hate it when Seattle makes the top of one of these lists because it means more people will be moving there. It is already hard enough to get around that place!

Great statistic find! That's why Seattle is such a booming city for high-tech and commerce than any other city. We have the best laws and fairest laws because we have the smartest people. GO SEATTLE!

2 cents, Boeing moved the 787 to SC because wages are cheaper there. In most of the rest of the country, the minimum wage is still 7.25.

Factoid, I like you.. Answer, 'cuz they're dumb and emotional creatures navigating life on base instinct and intrinsic bias instead of engaging the intelligence that they should have garnered in their quest for literacy. Literacy is just another word for an expensive self absorbed head trip. Or is just a useless and wasted college degree obtained by a below par member of our species. Only intelligent people should fill the hallways of our higher education. And heaven forbid, only intelligent people should vote. Literacy is overrated and overpaid. That's why Boeing has moved much of the 787 production to S.C. btw, I prefer freedom. You know, nothing left to lose...

Why do the literate, keep electing the illiterate?

Ha, literate and intelligent are very different things. There are some pretty dumb 'literate' people walking these here streets...

This is undeniable proof that being literate doesn't necessarily mean that one knows how to drive a vehicle. We may be literate, but we, collectively, are amongst the worst drivers in the country, bar none!

Is it possible to be most literate and also most politically messed up? I think it must be so. Just what are the people reading?

It must be the large amount of coffee drank in Seattle. The best in the west!
