Seattle mayor delays call for 200 job cuts

SEATTLE -- Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn says he's delaying his call for department heads to identify 200 senior positions that could be eliminated.

McGinn initially asked for the positions to be identified by late February. But in an e-mail on Saturday, he told city employees that he would instead ask departments to look for potential cuts later this year as they develop next year's budget.

Last year there were 983 senior positions in the city government -- 327 more than there were in 2002.

In his e-mail, McGinn warned that tax revenues are falling several million dollars short of projections and further budget cuts could be needed this year.

are you kidding me! government needs to operate within a budget the same way the rest of us do.. times are tough and people are getting laid off (i did), but it is an opportunity for companies and government to restructure, keep the highest performing workers, and cut costs.. where does the sense of entitlement come from? It takes alot of people to run a company, but when that company lays off hundreds or thousands of workers to cut costs, it seems to find a way to continue to exist. Government will be no different. So they might have to work a little longer each day.. its us taxpaers that are footing that bill.. do you always pay for stuff that you dont need or that is not providing any additional value? I would argue the government is worse off by keeping employees around because it misses an opportunity to get fresh talent with a different perspective when the market turns around and hiring rebounds. Instead opting for maintaining the status quo. wake up people before we turn into C

Most people dont understand just how many people it takes to really run a city. It takes something to go wrong, not be done ontime or unprepaired for a snow storm for people to realize that the current people running the city are over worked and are cutting corners to tackle the more important issues. Sure there may be some Sr. Level jobs that we can do without, but at what cost? The job they do is important and has to be done by someone and that someone already has a job. Now they have to do theirs plus more because we have to save $. Something to really think about when these job cuts come around...

I applaud Mayor McGinn for doing the right thing and not making the cuts. I personally know a lot of government workers, and it is not fair for them to transfer their skills to other jobs in the already harsh market. We just have to make it through this rough patch by taxing a little extra, so when the economy is growing again, we still have the experts running the city instead of a bunch of newbies who don't know what they are doing.

Come on and make the cuts. Mayor Nichols hired without any qualms to the city budget. Get things back under control and CUT the overhead!!

No, Mike cut those fat cats now... This is what I though separate him from Nickels, but if won't cut them, he would be just Mayor Nickels with a beard.
