SEATTLE - A Seattle man put his life on the line to save a stranger from a vicious pit bull attack.

Katelynn Doolittle was jogging near Lake Washington when a pit bull got away from its owner and attacked her. She was bitten five times.

Matt Loyd saw what happened and ran to help her. He blocked the dog so she could get away, getting bitten in the process.

Katelynn says she's sure she would have been seriously hurt if it wasn't for Loyd.

"I just freaked out cause like there was no stopping this dog," she said. "There was no control over this dog and I probably would have been torn to shreds if Matt hadn't come up."

"I just remember she was in a lot of trouble and I tried to help out as much as possible," said Loyd.

It's not known if the owner of the dog will face charges or if the dog will be put down.

I was a victim of a Pitbull mix attack in Madison Park in August 2010 and was seriously bitten on the leg. This was a completely unprovoked attack; I was walking with my friend on the street, the dog was lying in the grass, no leash, no owner, and when we came by it, it grabbed my leg and bit it really hard. As it turned out, that SAME DOG had bitten 2 women 45 minutes prior to that. Two of us had to go to the Emergency Room for treatment. I couldn't work for a month, and my leg, despite all the antibiotics, became infected. And here is the best: THE DOG WAS SET FREE, even though it bit 3 people, and even though the owners received a notification of "Cruelty to animals". After much fighting with Seattle Animal Control, the dog was declared "Dangerous"--and can no longer live within the Seattle City limits. This is NOT ENOUGH: this dog should be destroyed. sadly, no one picked the story because we didn't want to make a big deal of it at first. Where is the dog today? No one knows...

My wife was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a pitbull mix on a public street in Burien. The dog was off of the owners property after leaving the property through an open gate while the owners were not home. She was transported to the trauma center at Harborview Hospital. I arrived at Harborview to see my wife covered in blood from her face to her feet. She was in a state of shock, she pulled the gauze away from her face and said " my lip is gone." With her mouth closed you could see her bottom teeth, her gums, and part of her jaw. This was an aggressive,"dangerous dog" that was harmful to the community. After deeming the dog"dangerous"Burien decided to return it back to the owners, with an order to remove the dog from their city after violating city code.THE DOG WAS SET FREE.The emotional trauma that my wife endures on a daily basis is hard to comprehend.Vicious animals do not belong in anyone's communiy. We need laws so this injustice against innocent victims will not to prevail again.

Some of these comments are ridiculous! People that have no experience are all of a sudden experts, and know what's best? I'm sorry, but you are way off the mark, and show your ignorance about dogs. Not just pit bulls; but dogs in general. Freaking walking know it alls! Bet you are the people that have a difficult time getting along with others, and the small amount of friends you do have think you are stubborn. You're always right about everything, and when proven wrong, you have a difficult time accepting it. I'm serious, you sound like a bunch of twits! If you want the real truth about the breed, simply ask a veterinarian or animal behaviorist, rather than gathering up biased, short-sighted information. They are the true professionals that know much, much more about any of us do, so stop letting the news educate you. to Roscoe10 You charge the community with stupidity and judgement. No one wants to be hurt by pitbulls. You're calling that stupid? As to your ramblings about other breeds, other breeds do NOT bite in the same way as pitbulls, so YOU should do your research. The degree of lethal is highly compounded in a pitbull attack because of the locking jaw and the inbred ferocity. And, yes, we are the community and the community has majority rule. Considering the talk here, the majority IS ruling and it probably will come down eventually to ban of pitbulls. The sooner the better. Think how many people will be spared the terror and the injuries.

Roscoe, do you have some statistics to back up your statement that other breeds attack as often as pit bulls? Our neighbors had one years ago and once when I working in my front yard the Pit bull tore out of it's house and attacked a small dog walking by on a leash. I have never seen a dog act in such a savage way. It was obvious that it was only out to kill the other dog. The owner of the little dog literally yanked her dog up by the leash and then the pit bull went after her arm. It was totally out of the blue, the woman and dog were minding their own business not on the pit bulls property. The owner went on and on about what a sweet dog he was and how this had never happened and something must have provoked him. I am tired of people defending this breed. They obviously have something in their genetic make up which makes them more likely to attack.

Not all pit bulls are bad dogs!!! Its the owners that are irresponsible and stupid, that give all the other wonderful dogs a bad rap. Yeah i agree if you dont know how to handle this breed, you probably shouldnt have one. And i do also think that owners are responsible for what their dogs do, yes, this person should be held accountable for what his their dog has done. Yeah its easier for ignorant people to blame "the breed" as a whole, but thats because this is all you hear, how bad and dangerous pit bulls are. If you do your research or know anything about animals, you would know that many other breeds attack just as often if not more. It just shows the stupidity and judgement of the community. Outlawing the breed is not the answer and many wonderful, loving dogs will be put down. Hold the irresponsible owners resonsible.

Bit bulls arent evil anymore than a tiger is evil. They both do what biology has taught them to do. We wouldnt let a tiger walk down the street with just a leash or not even that much, why would we let a pit bull do it? Pit bulls should not be owned by the average person, there are laws against private ownership of tigers why not the same for pit bulls?

pit bulls should be treated as a weapon. you need to be educated & licensed to carry a gun. you should be educated & licensed to own a pit bull. while not all pit's behave bad, ALL pits carry the genetic background to be bad. a responsible owner & trained pit bull minimize the threat to people. I'm guessing a movement the woman did made the pit think he needed to protect "his people" and the owner didn't have the correct training tools in place to stop the attack. I feel bad for everyone involved. We had a pit kill our two 95lb goats and a 115lb llama in less than 30 minutes. the 1st thing the owner says is "he never did that before". ALL PITS HAVE THE GENETIC BACKGROUND TO BE BAD. because of their strength, the damage they can quickly inflict is horrible.

This man in my opinion is a total hero! I know years ago, when a pit went after my son while he was riding his bike, a man came to his rescue and pulled the dog off my son. My son's leg was bitten twice and required medical attention, but it could have been much worse. Men like Loyd and the man that helped my son are HEROS!! I read all the pit owners comments defending their dogs and saying that its the owner that trained or did not train their dog to not attack. Sounds like many things in our society. A few ignorant people cause accidents talking on their cells and now no one can use one. All of us know it only takes a few idiot people to cause issues for us all. The issue is and always will be that pit bulls are genitically inclined for attacking; that is just how it is. No matter how many "good" pits are out there, there are just as many or more that are mean and do attack. And as with the cells, to protect us all, pits need to be banned. No more attacks like this one.

Pit bull’s the root to all evil? When any other dog bites, nobody hears about the incident because it is not a pit bull. German Shepherd, chow chow, collies and akita are the top breeds that bite per capita. Let us outlaw pit bulls along with any breed that might have some small blood line related to a pit bull. How about the english bulldog, bull terrier along with any shepherd, blue healer, akitas and why stop there. We should stop driving because more people die in car accidents? That's seattle where you can do what you want, unless someone doesen't like it and that is absolutely everything?

Folks need to carry guns more often. If you don't want a big bulky .357 in a shoulder holster, get a nice .380 to wear in an ankle holster. But the bottom line is you are responsible for your own safety. The cops are simply around to fill out the criminal reports after you are already severly injured or dead.

Maybe this will help you understand. Imagine you are out walking with your 2-year-old (or a niece, or a friend's kid, if you don't have children--just imagine a cute little kid). Now imagine that a pit bull attacks and kills the child. Would you have a different opinion of pit bulls? When my husband and border collie were attacked viciously by a pit bull, the pb pulled on its leash away from its 100-lb. owner, grabbed the border collie by the throat, lifted him in the air several times, and locked in. My husband kept beating the pb in the head and in the eyes. There was nothing behind the eyes to acknowledge it even knew where it was. It was pure instinct. After trips to emergency, both my husband and dog recovered, but the ordeal was traumatic. The owner had adopted the pit bull and HAD A 2-YEAR OLD GIRL. She was horrified to see what her dog would do without provocation and got rid of the dog that day (to a pb ranch/home for vicious dogs; the dog was likely put down.

I don't believe the argument is whether pit bulls are born bad or born good. They are born with instincts inherent to their breeding. My friend's border collie knew how to circle up the sheep before it was old enough for people training it, my grandpa's pointer knew how to point, my brother's lab knew how to retrieve. People trained them "when" but not how - their instinctive reactions made them appropriate to the job - its in them. It will not matter how sweetly someone raises a pit bull; the pit bull's instincts are in there and will come out given some sort of trigger. That a person would even choose to OWN a pitbull is question for a mental exam.

Yes Matt probably wasn't thinking with a clear mind at that moment just ask yourself if you would do the same thing. Being attacked by a dog is about the most horrifying ordeal anyone could ever go through and by a Pitt Bull a breed that was bred to do one thing ( KILL ) I can't emagin. Owners of dangerous breeds surely must be on some sort of ego trips for taking that kind of chance. Sure some my go thier whole lives without ever being aggresive but on th other hand another, a different story. You cant say it's in thier training for some go through demanding training still attack at a unprovoked moment., it's just thier breed.

I am SO SICK of pitbull owners bringing up other bite statistics. Pitbulls have been bred to bite and to kill for hundreds of years, and that's what they do. If you bring a tiger in to your home, and call it bootsie it doesn't mean that it wont hurt someone. Pitbulls have been ranked as the most dangerous dog for almost a decade. Get a clue. This guy obviously didn't think his dog was dangerous since he was walking it on a leash in a park, and look what happened. I was attacked by a pitbull, and it's owner said he probably just wanted to say hi. That's why I had to jump into my car to escape call the police and file a complaint to get paid for the damages to my vehicle caused by the dog. Pitbulls are dangerous dogs and do not belong in the hands of the general public.

I would like to see the owner charged with assault and the dog be put down and of course pay all expenses and loses of the innocent victims of this crime. I would like to know that people can safely run and walk in parks and not be attacked by people or their pets. On a second note people are feeding feral cats in Kinnear Park and it is apparently being allowed in a formal way. Feral cats kill millions of native birds and other native animals. Fed feral cats even can kill more because they have the added energy to do so. These cats should all be put in a shelter and put down if no one adopts them.

Holy cow, not ALL pitt bulls are bad dogs guys. In fact Golden Retrievers have actually held the record a number of times in recent years for the most dog bites/attacks on people .... it's not the pits fault that their owners treat them cruelly in order to produce violent or 'tough' dogs. I've met a number of really good, really sweet pits. Blame the owner, not the dog... though I do agree this dog and any other that attacks human or another animal needs to be destroyed.

How sad we have so little legal protection from irresponsible dog owners that it is "...not known..." whether or not they will face charges! It should be a certainty that they should - so much so that the exact penalty should be posted for all to read! Tim Eyman - please start another initiative that will protect human beings from vicious animal attacks such as this and so many more that have already occurred. The law should clearly state that any animal that attacks a human is destroyed and the owner must shoulder ALL costs of doing so, plus pay all medical bills, plus a levied fine, plus "pain and suffering." An attack like this should cost the owner thousands of dollars. It should be automatic, and payable immediately. That type of fine would hopefully put all dog owners on guard and maybe we'll get rid of many of these potentially attacking animals - and irresponsible dog owners - before many, many more vicious dog attacks happen to innocent people.

Pit Bulls attack even when trained by loving parents!!!! I bought a pit as a puppy ten years ago and loved that dog so very much. He went to the Petsmart training classes and we socialized him at the dog parks. When he was two years old I would have left him alone with my kiddos. When he was two years old he also bit the UPS man! We had to put him down and thankfully I was not charged. They are unpredictable no matter WHO the owner is.

Its the owners that need to be feared, not the pit bull. A properly trained family dog woudl not do this, regardless of the breed. It is my position that it is never the dog's fault but always the owners fault if the dog attacks anyone/anything. Hopefully the owner of this dog will be held to account. More and more states are keeping registries of people who abuse and should not keep animals (similar to the sex offender registries). I hope Washington sets their own animal abuse registry one day. I hope both parties are ok and if the owner was just naiive about their dog, they remember to properly train their dogs in the future.

Alas, yet another example of a wonderful, loving family dog (at least, I'm sure the owners would say so) who one day just lost his head and attacked a person. Every time this happens, people rant on both sides about 'killer dogs' and 'loving family pets'. There is no reason they can't BOTH be true. Chow Chows are like that. They're just fine until the day they take your arm off. Unpredictable. I wouldn't own a Chow and I wouldn't own a Pit Bull. Because you never know when that 'one day' is going to be.

So glad both the woman and the good citizen are o.k. When I first read the headline I thought, "please don't say it was a pit bull." Our family with 2 young girls own both a yellow lab and a pit bull. They are equally wonderful dogs. Both are gentle and loving towards our kitten and have never displayed any type of aggressive behavior. However, I totally understand why people are afraid of pit bulls. It's how people have used/abused this particular breed and so many people that choose to own them do so because they want to own a mean, vicious animal. It is very sad for both the people who get attacked and for the pit bulls fortunate enough to be placed in a kind loving home who get a bad name.

calli? With all due respect, there is a HUGE difference between getting bit and being mauled. The only way to stop the irresponsible idiots who have these dogs and cannot handle them, is to fine them severely and make it so that they cannot have ANY dog without taking out an insurance policy. Pnwfemale? There is a difference between a mauling and a bite and another huge difference between an unruly pug and a pit. A pug can be easily contained and handled. A pit can many times be stronger than an adult man. This man is a hero, and the owner of the pit should be held responsible.

The "Breed" is not the problem here, the owners are the problem. I do not personally like Pit Bulls, or any of the variety of cross breeds called "Pit Bulls", preferring a more family oriented dog over one bred for fighting and baiting bulls. However having said that, Pit Bulls, whether the American Pit Bull Terrier, or American Staffordshire Terrier, or any number of other dogs ambiguously called "Pit Bulls" are definitely not the problem. The problem boils down to people who only own the dogs as a machismo statement and to look like they are some bad boy/girl. These people indiscriminately breed mixed "pit bulls" and sell them disregarding the dog's well being and the public's as well. None of these people properly train their dogs, and usually do the bass-ackwards thing of baiting the dogs to make them mean. And that is why many city/county/state governments are banning and euthanizing these dog

The owner of the pit bull is at fault for not keeping his or her dog under control. Outlawing pit bulls will not make the incidence of dog bites go down. Do the research on Denver, CO. That city has banned pit bulls, yet the incidence of dog bites has increased instead of decreasing. Pit bulls are strong dogs; but, they are no more likely to bite than chihuahuas. Actually, I think the chihuahuas are probably more likely to bite than the pit bull.

This bread of dog is CLEARLY a continuing threat to society. They need to be outlawed. In this case, the owners should face criminal AND CIVIL CHARGES.
