SEATTLE -- Staying at a hotel in downtown Seattle could get pricey. Hotel owners and city leaders on Tuesday announced an effort to charge guests more each night to help pay for tourism advertisement.

The Seattle Hotel Association wants the city to pass a $2 a night hotel room fee.  That's in addition to the 15.6 percent tax hotel guests already pay - one of the highest hotel taxes on the West Coast.

“No more taxes. We have enough – plain and simple,” said Frank Albanese.

Albanese has owned a Local Color art cafe for eight years in Pike Place Market.

“I think it's counter-productive,” said Albanese. “As a business owner, I think it can only create confusion and cause people to maybe look elsewhere. Not necessarily else outside of Washington, outside of the city of Seattle,” said Albanese.

But Seattle hotels hope to generate $ 5 -$6 million for tourism advertisement and promotion.  This comes after the state closed down its tourism office last month.

But for Albanese, $2 is too hefty a fee for his customers to pay.

“If they increase it by another $2, I think we’re just going to hurt ourselves in the long run,” he said.

The Seattle Hotel Association said they hope the city approves the room fee before the end of this year. Then, the money collected would go to the Seattle's Convention and Visitors Bureau for tourism marketing.

What is wrong with the hotel association? Seattle doesn't need to be advertised. Seattle has such a huge name on it's own that people make plans to come here without advertising. Don't skunk around like this during a recession or you will lose people coming. Hotel rates are the single most reason that people will stay. Too high, no guests. With the internet people look these things up. I've seen a lot of people staying in Tukwila and busing into Seattle.

stryker said on July 12, 2011 at 6:46 AM Advertise how often SPD shoots, tackels and or stomps on the heads of INNOCENT people. That will surely get them to come spend their money. Again as I said to Vffm.. You think SPD is bad? Go to Vegas.

Seattle never lowered the taxes after the last few tourist campaigns.

Wow, who is the tard that came up with this? So in keeping with this mindset i guess all retail stores should charge a $2 tax to support their marketing departments? How can you call it a tax when it is actually a surcharge to fund marketing???? Thank God the really stupid people went into the hospitality industry and politics and stayed out of mainstream business.

wow. A page right out of the airlines fee handbook. Start with this fee and see how far we get and then another and another and soon you will not have any guests coming. I found a great new site to vent about things like this and other travel experiences at airlineslodgingetc.com

Besides, think about it. Come to Seattle for a vacation? The Police Force is disfunctional, there are stabbings and shootings everynight all over town and we are going to say come and enjoy the city? Yeah right.

Why should the public pay for a publicity campaign these guys want? Let those who want to mount a publicity campaign pay for it themselves! This is a thinly disguised effort to put money in their own pockets at the expense of the public. Business people are so inconsistent and ridiculous. They rail against new taxes, then propose them on their own, even though they say new taxes hurts jobs. Assinine in the nth degree.

There ya go. Thats the Seattle that I know. Put out a tourist campaign and then tax the fools another $2.00 a night for the promo. Tell ya what folks that won't fly in times like this. Not at all. We are about to default on our debt and so are some of the larger country's in Europe. People haven't the confidence or the money to take vacations.

Strange how other cities don't have to do this to attract people.if Seattle King County tourism is down ,maybe people should look at what they are trying to sell.
