SEATTLE - The Washington State Department of Transportation has identified 157 buildings along the route of Seattle's deep bore tunnel that could be affected by construction.

WSDOT has met with many of the building owners and is making plans to mitigate potential damage.

"Fewer than ten buildings are considered the most sensitive structures and we've developed strategies to minimize damage" says Ron Paananen, the project administrator.

WSDOT are definitely very professional in researching the stability of these old unreinforced masonry buildings. Sound Transit on the other hand has been haphazard in their approach to the tunneling, therefore causing huge problems in Beacon Hill, and potentially huge problems in Capitol Hill. Their "wait and see attitude" towards this difficult engineering project need to be investigated thoroughly before another failure causing damage and injury and potential loss in public confidence.

Deep bore tunnel.....a project supported & pushed by the "downtown" side of the viaduct landowners (for personal gain) and their pocket politicians, Schell (sp) Nichols etc. Also, 4 total lanes is absurd, need at least 6 , plan for the future!...Hastaluego

Rebulding the viaduct is cheaper, simpler, and is replacing like for like. Remember the "Big Dig" in Boston? Huge cost overruns and WAY behind schedule to get it done.

intrestgal: That's why we need to have much more studies to make sure it doesn't happen. This will definitely be a great job creator for the city of Seattle to create such a state-of-the-art structure that will sure wow all the other cities in the world. Everything should be on the table, even extra revenue thru car tabs to get this done. We should go as far as allocating extra money in case of over-runs. As Washington State do not have a state sales tax, this gives the city much wiggle room to raise more revenue.

Until the earthquake hits and brings them all down. I've stated this from the beginning.

Lets hope that "progress" (as you call it) doesn't destroy the beautiful and historic buildings in Pioneer square. They represent the founding of Seattle - I am so sick of hearing about the tunnel. So much opposition and cost over runs and they haven't even began construction and now this. OH JOY.
