SEATTLE, Wash. -- These have been trying times for Puget Sound Somalis. The Seattle-area has the fourth largest Somali population in the country.

Somali Americans are trying to cope with the bad press related to the arrest of a Somali teen, who is accused of plotting to bomb a Portland tree lighting ceremony.

"In general, our community is feeling scared, afraid," said Hamdi Abdulle, who heads the Somali Youth and Family Club south of Seattle.

“We're not only worried about terror and stuff like that, we're also worried about drugs, dropouts, being behind," she said. “All the things that any mother can be worried about.”

Some Somalis have said they are troubled to hear about young American Somalis being radicalized. But they're also worried about increased scrutiny from the FBI, the media and fellow citizens.

"We have nothing to hide,” said Abdulle. “We want to be watched if we are doing something wrong."

Somali immigrants already face an uphill struggle, learning about cultural differences and the English language.

In addition to the Portland bomb plot, several other high-profile Northwest terror cases have put Somalis in an unwanted spotlight.

Fugitive Ruben Shumpert fled Seattle and is believed to have been killed fighting with extremists in Somalia.

Roosevelt high graduate Abdifatah Isse pleaded guilty, last year, to supporting the same overseas terror organization.

Local Somalis worry that someone might take out their anger on innocent community members.

"We're all Americans," said Abdulle.

Leaders of several local Somali organizations have been meeting over the past couple of days. They said they are trying to coordinate a response to these terror cases and will have more to say on the issue soon.

Islam is not terrorism, Its only the person who bring terroism to the world not islam. Its strictly forbidden to bring death to innocent persons much people dont know this. I love my religon I love ALLAH an i hate all who kill innocent humans in the name of allah !!! ALLAHU AKBAR And it says in the noble Quran that " If anyone slays a personunless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land it would be as if he slew all people. And if anyone saves a life,it would be as if he saved the life of all people. Qur'an 5:32

@honest_a_hot Don't talk about the religion of Islam like you know it..let me refresh your memory with a little history lesson. The Christians did more then mass killing, they put down a whole nation because they had dark skin ( at Least Islam didn't do that) when slavery started the Christians never condemned it instead they got their slaves inside churches and preached about them being obedient to their so called christian masters.. A little before that there was a land called Al-Andalus (Now called Spain), Muslims governed that nation. On that land there were Christians, Jews and Muslims. They ruled it for more then 700 yrs, and they weren't prejudice or racist towards any nations color. After that the Christians took over and exiled the Muslims and Jews. The Spanish Inquisition was racialist than religious: to purify peninsular Catholicism by eliminating from the Church and its clergy all descendants of Jewish or Muslim blood. TO BE CONTINUED.

@repetivity Thanksgiving Slavery Columbine Nagasaki Hiroshima Yeah, I'm sure "American Christians" have never been involved in mass murder either. It's so easy to demonize a whole community based on one persons stupid choices to fuel your illness and hunger for hatred. Better yet, lets set up policies and procedures to keep oppressing others who don't look like you - oh wait, that's been happening since the inception of America. You're welcome.

You could make the argument that Somalis have an anger problem and are even hateful. I used to work as a security officer downtown. One of our janitors one night was waiting outside of one our garages for her ride. She was Ethiopian. A black guy came along and asked her where she was from. She told him and he said he was from Somalia and proceeded to beat the you-know-what out her. One of our other security offices was present and he stepped in to stop this attack. It makes me wonder sometimes if Somalis hate anyone who is not Somalian.

The Somalis need to action in their own community. remember a few weeks back the Somali young girl sex ring ?? We{AMERICANS} need to be more aware of the third world Muslims coming here. The cultural difference are astounding. The mind set of some immigrants is in the 16th and 17th century when it comes to human rights and treatment of others. BEWARE!

I enjoy the irony of the news media pandering to the muslim population asking if they are afraid to leave their homes and congregate because someone set a fire in a mosque in response to a bomb plot designed to kill hundreds. View this in light of the demonstrated record of islamic violence since 9/11 and you might realize that the people the media should be feeling sorry for is US! We non-muslim Americans are the ones who truly have a cause to fear being in public. How many more of your whack-job muslims are out there planning mass murder? Yet I am supposed to feel sorry for YOU?

Fear of retaliation? I think not. Fear against condeming those of the Somali community that wish to do harm against may people from diverse nations? That's your issue. Either address the issue or deny both. Oh, and you college students in the "ye olde either-or argument logic argument" responses: Get use to it. There ARE "either-or" arguments. Want to put this to the test? I'll be happy to oblige you with this. Guess those professors didn't prepare you for that one, did they.

Nothing wrong with being liberal, as I am . Calling a spade a spade is neither democrat or republican, just common sense. Until muslims condemn other muslims that are violent, I mean openly criticize them and their radical beliefs. Until then I won't trust a muslim ever. Poop BUH

Don't support Arab or Muslim's businesses! That includes Seven Eleven, gas stations, convenient stores, etc. etc. That's my way of showing the jerkoff terrorists how I feel about them! I've never seen any Christian, Catholic, or Buddhist terrorists who's into mass-killing! Muslim is an evil religion! I'm sure it's the religion of Satan himself!

If there is such a thing as a 'moderate' Muslim...Somali or any nationality...now is the time for them speak out against the people of their cultural and religion who intentionally aim to do serious harm to Americans...on American soil. Naw, they just worry about the 'backlash'.....which tells me, they still support Islam first and formost....and to hell with the rest of the people in this country. Islam is NOT a peaceful religion, people. Study it, read about it, know your facts before you fall into that slippery slope of sloshy sentimentality.....it is NOT intended to be at peace with 'infadels' (all non believers of Islam). Mohammed could NOT spread his religion by any other means than to rape, murder, pillage, threaten, indimidate....etc...and HIS religion is no different today than it was when it first began. Remember the 'cries of victory' on 9/11...in this country and all around the world...from these 'peaceful people'.....as Americans died in their own country!

They will never condemn other muslims. They are more worried about the FBI, and other Americans being critical of them, or keeping an eye on them. I Dare a somali muslim to condemn the Portland terrorist, or any muslim radical. They will never do it.
