SEATTLE, Wash. -- An employee working alone inside a Seattle store shot and killed a burglary suspect while capturing another.

Seattle Police said two apparent burglars broke into Sharp's Oudoor Equipment store in the 5900 block of 4th Avenue South Thursday night just before 11:30 and confronted the worker.

Police said they received a 911 call about shots fired, not by the burglars but by the employee.

"He subsequently shot one of the suspects and held the other one at gunpoint until patrol officers arrived on scene," says Officer Jeff Kappel.

The shot suspect was pronounced dead on scene. The second suspect was uninjured. He will be questioned by homicide detectives before being booked in the King County Jail for investigation of burglary.

The store employee was not injured, and is also being questioned by detectives.

The owner of Sharp's Outdoor Equipment said that his employee is fine, and he is working to learn more details before commenting.

Seattle Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The criminals should have to pay for the therapy the employee will need after this. It is horrible knowing you have taken a life. Even if it is the life of a criminal. I am just happy we are not reading about another employee killed by criminals.

Hardly a case for comparison. An armed cop, in broad daylight, shoots an alcholic, disabled, senior citizen walking across a public street, not threatening anyone or in the process of committing a crime. All you have to do is listen to the tapes. Two burglars, at night, break into private property and proceed to commit a felony. While in the process of committing that felony one is shot by a threatened private citizen. Maybe the store employee shout be put in charge of police training. At least he can make a decision appropriate to the circumstances. Seattle police cannot.

Here's another potential problem... The guy who got killed probably has family and friends. What about the ones who feel like they might want revenge? Now this worker has to be paranoid about every stranger on the street. Was the deceased a gang member? It's one thing to carry a gun to protect yourself "just in case". It's something totally different to carry because you're being stalked by someone or some people who are intentially are targeting you, your wife, and/or your kids... I wouldn't be so glad for this guy if I were you. Just sayin'...

If you're tough enough to break in to someone else's property, you're tough enough to die for that VIOLATION of territory NOT YOURS! ALL such criminals should be made to face such summary justice, then maybe they would think twice about taking what is not theirs! BTW, the parents of such scum should be made to face the same penalty, for as you sow, so shall you reap! Good gun control on the part of the employee: firm grip, good aim, only the criminal was hit.

Too many questions un-answered here. Think for a moment. I'll wait for the police to file their report. This was still someone's son, I'm sorry he had to die to learn this lesson. I hope his friend is now on the road to church to thank God for his life.

Gosh - As a gun owner AND a gun control advocate - I am amazed at the folks who felt a need to attempt to politicize this piece.

This is great to hear. The left is always trying to portray guns as bad and we should all be disarmed so the criminals can run freely. Here ia a guy potentially saving his own life with the use of a gun. Great job. This needs to happen a lot more often. Honestly, this is the only way crime gets reduced is by criminals becoming fearful. long live the Second Amendment.

Really who would say anything about the cops shooting somebody in the act of an accual crime. This would have scored them a few ada boys that they could use these days. Hopefully nothing will happen to the employee for having a gun at work.

freedomfrank - when someone's writing has misspellings, incorrect punction, incorrect grammar, it becomes much more of an effort to read and understand what that individual is trying to say. When I come across a post or anything else like that, I tend to ignore it and move on. However, reporters are supposed to be PROFESSIONAL's! They should have the skill to write a grammatically correct, correctly spelled and punctuated sentence! As for the criminals - too bad the employee wasn't able to shoot both, but good job!

Wetland, it's sad to think about how right you are. There are all these people saying "kudos" to the store employee but if this had been an officer doing the shooting, they would be screaming to "use less force, you bad bad cops." I think the employee did a great job of keeping the situation under control and I hope the remaining suspect gets charged for felony murder and the employee gets a raise.

@perspective I forgot about that. In for a penny, in for a pound. When you partake in a crime, you are held responsible for all that occurs due to that crime. Good point!

If we could get something like this to happen every time the bad guys make a move we could save the tax payers money by reducing our police force by half. Only by raising the price of crime will you find the criminals are no longer willing to pay the price.

Another case for dummest criminals...rob a sporting goods store full of guns and folks who know how to use them. People need to learn how to defend themselves in this economy...even if it means carrying pepper spray or a can of wasp spray that shoots further...

Well, freedomfrank, you may not think spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors are that big a deal, however, when reading a story or posted comments, it's much harder to understand what the writer is trying to say when their writing is full of errors. And, writers for news media are SUPPOSED to be PROFESSIONALS! As for the burglars - too bad he didn't shoot both!

I really enjoy starting out my day with good news like this. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to know that one more predator/thug has been eliminated. I have no sympathy for the dead scumbag or his family. That employee deserves a big promotion! Once you decide to cross the line and victimize others then you accept the possibility that your intened victim may turn the tables and put you six feet under. Good job here by "employee of the year"
