SEATTLE – Seattle Police sources confirm a prominent UW men’s basketball player is under criminal investigation, after a 16-year-old girl claimed the player raped her.

“I don’t have any comment,” said UW Head Coach Lorenzo Romar as he left a function Monday night, noting he is “aware” of the situation.

The university acknowledged it is aware of the investigation, but declined further comment on the details. In a statement, the university said "Neither department officials, nor members of the UW men's basketball coaching staff or team will comment on the matter at (Tuesday's) open media session."

A Seattle Times blog Tuesday afternoon, however, says Romar is expected to say something about the matter at his press conference.

No one has been charged with a crime and it is not known if the player in question has been interviewed by police.

The team is scheduled to play Thursday night at Stanford and is currently ranked 17th in the country by the Associated Press.

I remember Duke -- four rich white privileged athletes coerced their victim into recanting. It happens far more often than you'd think.

@wmdkitty do some research look up Duke Lacrosse team tell me what athletes are privileged. All of which because of an allegation were kicked off the team only to be found innocent after due process.

What in the world does the charge of rape have in common with whether or not the Husky Basketball team is ranked or not? These are two very different pieces of information. The charge of rape is serious... Basketball is entertainment... Stop caudling one player by putting all the others under scrutiny. Seattle Police needs to learn from the St. Mary's incident. A ball player nor anyone else has the right to disregard, demean and rape anyone of any age. If he did it, he needs to take responsibility. If he didn't, then stand up like a man and deny it. Looks like a cover up from the outside...but would the police participate in that kind of activity? I would hope not, and I don't think so. If all the players play in this week's games, then I really see a problem with the disregard for the team. If he's 22, then he should be a man. Step aside at least until this is resolved...one way or another.

"a 16-year-old girl claimed the player raped her.", This year, last year, way too many holes in this report right now, Why even speculate right now, Why dont you wait till you have more facts?

Sometimes these stories are true, sometimes they are not. Seems there are way too many cases similar to this one, particularly in the pros. With pros, it appears some of the women are just looking for money. This one cannot be money, but possible anger on the part of the girl. Hope he's innocent, but he needs his behavior watched carefully.

Another privileged jock, another victimized teenager... when are we going to stop acting like athletes are entitled to whatever they want?

A reporter at King5 news is under criminal investigation, after being acused of forced sodomy on a 80 year old homeless gay man. We cannot reveal the source, but it is deemed to be reliable. A person in a King5 new t-shirt, acknowledged they were aware of the investigation, but declined further comment on any details. None of this is true as far as I know, but I'm just trying to make a point on good reporting. With a little work couldn't the reporter fine something to share with us readers more relevent, or at least until he has a source. At this point every member of that team is under suspition.

Yes and bringing it up not only casts that cloud but then adds fuel to the fire because many people will say that it must have happened when as yet, there have been no charges made, just allegations so we really don't even know if it did really take place. If he was being charged with the crime, then it should be reported.

Why bring this up if you have nothing for details? Now every player has a cloud over his head and is open to retaliation from some whacko. Sounds like someone at the SPD got a kickback for a headline.
