WASHINGTON, D.C. - A little boy from Seattle is touching the hearts of thousands of people who came to Washington D.C. Tuesday to protest the health insurance industry.

Marcelas Owens turns 11-years-old Wednesday and all he wants for his birthday is health care reform. Three years ago, Marcelas lost his 27-year-old mother to pulmonary hypertension. She became too sick to work and, when she lost her job, she lost her health insurance.

"She was in pain and she could barely walk," said Marcelas. "I think if she had health care, they could have given her the medicine that she needed and the treatment."

Marcelas' Grandmother, Gina Owens, now cares for him and his two younger sisters. She says her daughter would be proud.

"I'm sure she's walking with him every step of the way," said Owens.

Marcelas joins thousand of other people who rallied in front of the hotel where the health insurance industry is holding their annual conference.

They say their profits are between three and four percent - tiny compared to what the pharmaceutical companies make.

"Our industry includes hundreds of thousands of men and women who work hard every day to make the system work better and they don't deserve to be vilified as some political strategy," said Robert Zirkelbach of America's Health Insurance Plan.

Even though health insurance companies says their profits are not outrageous, holding their conference at the Ritz-Carlton where the standard room goes for $599 a night is not sitting well with protesters.

Marcelas will spend his 11th birthday on Capitol Hill to testify in front of a Congressional committee.

"Even if the health care bill doesn't pass, I'm gonna still march for health care, 'cause I know it's the right thing," said Marcelas.

Boy, Obama and his idiot people will stop at nothing to use a little boy to help do their dirty work. Wonder what they paid him to speak for them ?? Obama, the WORST president this country has ever had. Fasten your seat belts because we are in for the worst ride of our lives.

Fails to mention that Owens’ grandmother and family have been longtime activists for the left-wing, single-payer advocates of the Washington Community Action Network or that the boy and his grandmother traveled to Washington with sponsorship from the Astroturf lobbyists of the Health Care for America Now outfit, which characterized Marcelas as an “insurance abuse survivor.” Just like their terrorist friends, Democrats use human shields too.

Marcelas' mother received treatment at both Swedish and UW Medical Center despite not having health insurance. Having health insurance does not mean there will always be a positive outcome. Taking advantage of this child's tragic loss only proves these people have no shame whatsoever.

Think We'll ever find out how much His Family was paid by Ms. Patty?

wearedoomed... because she was "in the hospital" doesn't necessarily mean she was there for the time period her medical condition would have required, nor that she was receiving the degree of treatment her condition would have required. I suspect the implication is that if she'd received hospitalization earlier (not late in her illness), and received the levels of care appropriate to her condition, she might have survived. I simply don't see where your post casts any doubt on the legitimacy of this young boy's heartache and concern for the loss of his mother.

Below is Marcelas talking about his Mom in 2008. Notice she was in the Hospital. I thought she recieved no HEALTH CARE?? MARCELAS: "She was in the hospital, and I was a little bit afraid ‘cause she had something in her mouth." MARCELAS WAS ABOUT TO FINISH 2ND GRADE. MARCELAS: "It was two days before my graduation. And I told her about I was gonna do a dance. And, um, I told her that I would tell her all the details. BUT HE DIDN'T GET THE CHANCE. MARCELAS: "And when we came back, we found out she was dead. We lit candles and then we tried to pray but I couldn't handle it, and I was crying a lot." THE BRIGHT SPOTS IN MARCELAS' LIFE WERE TWO LITTLE SISTERS. HIS GRANDMA. AND HIS FRIENDS AT FIRST PLACE SCHOOL. MARCELAS: "They tried to cheer me up, like, we were pretending we were at McDonald's."

Those of you who are pelting this boy for taking a stand for what he believes and that he has the courage to do it? Why don't you go the way of Rush Limbaugh who said he'd go to Costa Rica if this health bill passed. Oh Wait! Costa Rica has a government health system!

If this child finds some sense of solace regarding the loss of his mother and a sense of purpose in going to Washington DC to voice his thoughts, that's a wonderful thing. What's happened to some people that they try to tear down an 11 year old simply because his thoughts don't agree with their own political sensibilities?

When a young person that has no real life experience in much of anything asks for something, they actually believe it's free. With that said, President Obama and this 11 year old should see eye to eye.

Obama is really digging deep on this one. How can an 11 year old form his own political ideas ? This WH and Congress are creating a real troubling direction for our country. I thought the last administration was bad but I find this one right on equal ground with the Bush era.

infolife and daisydog are the most hateful people you must have miserable lifes it is obvious it projects in all of your comments - none of which is true. This story is about a failing healtcare system, i know tifany was treated horrible at Swedish - i witnessed the person next to her with a broken leg get better treatment than her because she had coverage. We need to start the foundation for better healthcare now

My heart goes out to the boy and his family but this is a crock. His mother was treated, she refused to go to the doctor at times because she had a terminal disease and there was nothing they could do for her. If we had Obama care she still would have passed away. The whole pretense is to stir peoples emotions up without giving them the facts! Leave it up to Patty Murry to lie about something!

Another demonstration for Communist Socialism the way Democrats use children for gaining sympathy. Democrats act the same way as the North Korean Dictator, when using children. Also, the way/style the kid talks, he is obviously being "coached" in how & what to say.

Is this the same kid I heard about on the radio yesterday? If so the reason his mother died was the fact that she weighed 400 pounds, and smoked.

I am wondering if this is one of Patty Murray's poster children. I had received an email from her a few months back where she was looking for people's heart rending stories from lack of health care to be sent to her. From these, I imagine, she pulled out the most tear jerking ones possible, so that she could make her case (we all know where she stands on this issue!) And we all know just as well that when you put a cherubic child in front of adults, no one can say anything negative without looking like they are evil (similar to the Taliban using little children as human shields........I wonder if grandma knows that her precious child is just being used).

Here is the deal. Of course everyone ought to have good health care, but not everyone deserves to have good health care, and here's why: Good health care is a commodity that needs to be purchased like housing and not everyone has done what it takes to be productive in order to properly earn the money it takes to buy it. And yes, everyone ought to have good housing. But once again, not everyone deserves good housing because it is a commodity that needs to be purchased. But what are some of the items that very many people choose to buy before good health care? We all know the answer: cable tv, cell phones, $130 tennis shoes, new cars, stacks of $59 x-box 360 games. Not to mention eating out multiple times a week, expensive clothes, trips to the casino, cigarettes, alcohol. No wonder nothing is left for health insurance!

Ummm, I'll take the word of an eleven year old with regards to this because his mom died, sure... Jeepers, "more qualified"? The kid is 11, and was 8 when his mom died, this is little more than a ploy to tug our heartstrings... How many will be killed when the health care system is a ridiculous bureaucratic behemoth that provides little more than an endless supply of jobs for crooked politicians and their friends who helped force it down our throats...

Priced a room in D.C. lately, recession notwithstanding? And most conferences do not require participants to book a room at the facility; D.C. has a pretty good Metro system. But that's a red herring. If the conference was held anyplace but under tents on the national mall, it'd be questioned. More to the point, I need to be coaching my 8-year old grandson to testify before Congress on income tax simplification or foreign policy, apparently. Yes, Jack***, the young man's sincerity is beyond question but better qualified to testify than "any of the rest of us" because he lost his mother? Do you really have time for the stories "the rest of us" could tell?

We all should definitely feel for Marcela and stand up to support him. I heard the Dave Ross interview with him and his grandmother today. I couldn't stand Mr. Ross for trying to grill the child and be skeptical on his story. For god's sake Dave, the kid's mother died...! He has the right to speak of healthcare more than any of us here!

Yep, you go and bat for your mom (one person) so the rest of us 390,000,000 people suffer from 1/6th economic control by the federal government, violating state rights, which will only end up: in court (all the way up to the Supreme Court who will ultimately decide) for years, while non-refundable taxes are collected by all economic classes to support a HealthCare bill that is bogus. Sorry extreme liberals (and I'm an old school lefty), but you need to read up on something called the Constitution. Federal Government cannot dictate what people can or cannot buy. This ObamaCare Bill being pushed isn't going ANYWHERE! The collective citizens (30% Republican Conservative, 30% Democratic Liberal, and 40% Independen-Swing-Voterst) are not in favor of this. Yes, even those on the moderate left and central left have concerns. But you keep your "hope" that this will "change", just like you hope the lottery will change your financial situation.
