OLYMPIA, Wash. - The search for a missing Kitsap County woman and her 8-year-old son grows more confusing as new clues surface of their mysterious disappearance over the weekend.

Police have spent the past two days looking for Shantina Smiley, 29, of Silverdale, and her son, Azriel. Both were en route on a road trip to see family in Castle Rock when they disappeared.

Thurston County sheriff's deputies were able to put piece together a timeline of the two's whereabouts and their strange path off I-5 into Olympia before they vanished, but there's still no trace of the two.

Smiley had borrowed her fiancee's minivan for the Saturday trip. She reportedly called her fiancee late Saturday night saying she was lost in Olympia; no one has heard from her since. Late Sunday morning the abandoned minivan was found partially submerged in Budd Inlet in Olympia.

According to Thurston County, the two went to the Handy Pantry market in West Olympia around 7:50 p.m. Around 9 p.m. they were seen at the Martin Way Diner about 3 miles away.

An employee there said Smiley bought a corn dog, then left without her purchase and then tripped and fell walking back to her van, but police said the fall was not serious.

Surveillance video showed their van pulling into the parking lot of the Gulf Harbor Mercantile store shortly before 10 p.m. Smiley may have wanted to use the pay phone there, but it is out of order. The video does not show her or her son getting out of the vehicle. The van pulled out of the parking lot and headed the direction it came from.

About 10 minutes later, Dennis Williams said the two knocked on the front door of his home about a mile from the store.

"She seemed upset because she was lost," said Williams.

Williams said Smiley used the phone to tell a relative they were lost and going to be late. He said the mother and son did not seem to be in trouble. If anything, said Williams, the boy seemed hungry.

"We gave him a piece of pizza," said Williams.

She was not injured but spoke of an accident, which investigators believe may have been a reference to falling down at the diner.

"I wish there was something more I could've done. I wish I knew more, or asked the right questions to be able to say this is a person who's in trouble," said Williams.

The van was found Sunday morning, down a dead end dirt road north of Olympia.  It was at the bottom of a hill, in the water.  The back hatch and side door were both open. No one was inside.

"We have no idea what happened," said Thurston County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy. "She could have been the victim of a crime, she could have wandered off."

Neither Smiley nor her son would have had any reason to come to the area.  Search and rescue crews searched the shoreline and scoured the nearby wooded terrain looking for clues, but found nothing of importance.

On Monday, Shantina's fiancee, Robert Simmons, came back to where the van was found, where searchers spent the day with dogs and with a Coast Guard helicopter and the Thurston County dive team looking for any clue.

"I have to keep a positive light in my heart she's out here somewhere," he said.

Police say Smiley has no history of mental illness or drug use and there's nothing to suggest she would run away.

Shantina's ex-husband, Jerry, says he's shocked by the turn of events.

"It's strange, not something she would do," he said.

Jerry and Shantina were high-school sweethearts in Castle Rock, and got married. Although long divorced, they've kept in touch. He says there is nothing in her personality that would explain her disappearance. In fact, he's worried something bad has happened to her and her son.

"It's crazy if someone has done something to her. I want her to come home. I want that happy ending like everyone else," he said.

Police say she Shantina is 5-foot-9, 140 pounds, with dark hair. Simmons says she has numerous tattoos, including one on her neck, and both wrists. She also had a couple of lightning bolts on her back.

Azriel is 4-foot-2, 100 pounds, with a blond mohawk.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help with any information on Shantina and her son.  Contact the Sheriff’s Office at 360-786-5530 or 5500.

An alcoholic who falls down at a convenience store, but goes out driving. She spends several hours in Olympia instead of proceeding to her destination and ends up in the bay. I am so sorry for the child. He should have been with his FATHER. If he had been with his FATHER, where boys belong, he would be alive today.

The more I read about this the more I am convinced that she had a medical situation that caused all of the confusion and erratic behavior. That could have caused her to travel fast down that steep road into the water. I wonder if there were any footprints in the sand leading away from that van. It is just so sad.

I agree that is sounds like she may have been experiencing a medical emergency of some undiagnosed nature, with the confusion, stumbling and erratic behavior, but who am I to say? I think the folks who jump to conclusions over who is guilty and who is lying are morons, pure and simple. There is not enough public evidence to jump to a conclusion and call out people whose character and worth you don't know, and it is rude, hurtful and ignorant. I myself was lost once with a friend while driving, got onto some logging roads late at night when I was young and unfamiliar with the area and totally lost my sense of direction. There were no lights and it was terrifying (no cell phones back then). I am not a praying person, I am hoping hard for this mother and child to be brought to safety.

That is not her fiancee...they clearly identify him as her ex. So where is the interview with the fiancee who loaned her his car? Something about her not having something as cheap and life saving as a cell phone bothers me...

This is a very odd story. No matter which direction you use to get to Olympia from Silverdale rather through Shelton of down I 5 how do you get hopelessly lost for hours once you get there?

In regards to the man not crying, keep in mind that our society prides itself on raising up strong masculine men who feel the sting of ridicule and rejection if they cry. The lack of tears is pathetic evidence of guilt.

oneski- that makes sense. She had confusion (getting lost), loss of balance, erratic behavior like driving into water then leaving all her stuff. But where is she? I hope she didnt swim out to sea. I wish I lived closer to help.

Her forgetting the food she purchased and her fall in the parking lot raises red flags for me. Could she have an undetected medical reason for these actions? My dad had a brain aneurysm years ago and in the days leading up to it was acting strangely. At one point he passed out in the shower, but then got up and said he was fine. If so, she may have become disoriented and confused and they are wandering lost somewhere or are in distress. I pray this will have a good outcome.

I sense a foul play. The police should focus the area where she borrowed the phone. I think someone there kidnapped her and her son, and dumped the van in the water. Hurry.

Hope both are found safe. However the longer they go missing the worse are their chances. Why did she give her son a mohawk? Must be the initiation thing with the cub scouts. Since as pbmama said, the missing woman was a cub scout leader. Although from the photo she sure seems like the nervous nervous type. She might have just freaked out after being lost for so many hours.

There are no gas stations in that immediate area. It is wilderness - even though it's just a couple of miles to I-5. It is extremely easy to get turned around in that area. Someone from Silverdale unfamiliar with the route should take HWY 16 to I-5 (but then there is a toll)

That time of night it's easy to get turned around. I've driven in that area and it would have been easy to make a wrong turn especially at night. According to the tide tables, Budd Inlet was at low tide at 10:37 PM on saturday. Hopefully they walked out and are lost although if they walked the wrong way, they may have been caught by the tide when it came in

The mom's behavior seems somewhat scattered and rattled.. It's strange that she knocked on a stranger's door at 10:00pm to use a phone. Weird behavior. If she was that upset over being lost, she could have had a gas station attendant contact the police to help her. This type of behavior will attract a predator. I sincerely hope that they are all right but doubt it. I'm impressed with how quickly the Olympia police have tracked her.

I know the family and they are wonderful people. It breaks my heart every time I watch the video because I see just how bad Robb is really hurting. Anyone who knows him could see that. He is a good, kind, and devoted man. He would NEVER do anything to hurt Kat. She is such a sweet heart and he truly loves her. Both of them are very active in their children's lives and are cub scout leaders. They are the kind of people who give the very best of themselves to everyone. My prayers are with them and I hope that Kat and Az come back home safe and sound.

You have to wonder about people who routinely make heartless comments on these blogs.... do they not comprehend that family members of this woman and her child might well read this article... might well see these heartless comments? Perhaps they don't care. The poster contend afterall that they are anonymous... they can't be held accountable. Oh... but they are not so anonymous... and they will be held accountable. Perhaps they don't believe in karma? But karma believes in them...

Are some of you just insane or just plain cruel and stupid? There is nothing wrong with the looks of either mother or son. The fiancee looks concerned to me and trust me, the police are looking at everything in this and very closely scrutinizing him. If some of you have nothing intelligent to say why not just shut up.

So sad and these situations are happening way too often. The innocent of violence. It just bothers me that many are so quick to judge and insinuate guilty before proven innocent. I was surprised that he could not seem to muster any tears and I feel an incling to side with a dubious presentation in the interview of the fiancee. I may be way off, but it was not convincing to me if I were a juror. It reminds me so much of the California murder a few years back and his wife was found drown and he had alibies all over the board, but non of them saved. May they be found safe soon .
