The Alaskan Way Viaduct reopened at 6 p.m. Saturday after its semiannual inspection and work related to the new State Route 99 tunnel but a 15k race on Sunday will also make things tough on State Route 99 north of the viaduct.

There will be another SR 99 closure this weekend related to the tunnel project. The highway will be closed between the Battery Street Tunnel and Valley Street from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.

“During the closure crews will shift SR 99 lanes to the east side of SR 99 just north of the Battery Street Tunnel. The lane shift extends the existing narrowing of SR 99 at Mercer Street one block south. It will create space for crews to start building new SR 99 on- and off-ramps at the north portal of the SR 99 tunnel,” said WSDOT in a statement.

On Sunday, the closure will be extended to the Woodland Park Zoo at N. 50th Street for the Hot Chocolate 15k and 5k race. Sections of Elliott and Western avenues as well as streets near the start and finish points around the Seattle Center will also be closed. The closure is expected to end around 11 a.m.

Drivers SR 99 on Monday should expect delays as they get used to the new lane reductions south of Mercer Street. WSDOT says those reductions will stay in place until the tunnel opens.
