Drivers in Seattle should be aware of three major road closures and some events expected to draw large crowds, all happening this weekend.
- The entire Alaskan Way Viaduct was closed from the Battery Street Tunnel to the West Seattle Bridge Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. It was expected to be closed Sunday, but WSDOT said their inspection work finished early, so the Sunday closure is canceled.
- Construction starts on Southbound I-5 in the U-District this weekend. During overnight hours, I-5 will be down to just one lane from Ravenna Blvd. to the Ship Canal Bridge. Lanes will be closed 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and open by Sunday at 10 a.m. Drivers should use express lanes or I-405.
- Crews are closing the ramp from the West Seattle Bridge to Southbound I-5 all weekend to replace old expansion joints. The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.
- Some events that will draw big crowds: the Sounders Home Opener game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m., weekend Comicon-goers should take I-5 as closures won't affect this route, and WSDOT advises runners partaking in the Sunday morning Hot Chocolate Run to use I-5 express lanes and leave 20 minutes early. The run will closures along State Route 99 early Sunday morning.
