One of Seattle's most iconic civil rights leaders now has a city street named in his honor.

On Sunday, Mayor Ed Murray and other city leaders held a ceremony to unveil street signs for “Rev. Dr. Samuel McKinney Avenue.'

The signs honorarily re-name part of 19th Avenue near Mount Zion Baptist Church, where Dr McKinney was the pastor for many years.

"Most of the time, something is named for a person when they're gone, they're not around and don't know about it, we thank God for what has taken place today,” Rev. McKinney said.

Council members Bruce Harrell and Tom Rasmussen held two public feedback meetings last year where community members expressed their support to recognize Dr. McKinney at 19th Avenue
