SEATTLE – Everyone made it out when a huge fire damaged two homes in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood Friday night.

The fire broke out at a home on 5th Avenue Northwest at about 9:30 p.m. More than 50 firefighters were called to the scene.

The fast moving fire quickly engulfed the home and spread to the house next door.

The families fear they've lost everything in the fire.

"What are we going to do? My grandma has no insurance on the house so it's a total loss. She's 89 years old,” said Shawlee Geiger

Investigators determined that the fire started when combustibles piled too close to an operating power generator ignited inside the house.

Damage to the two homes and their contents is estimated at $300,000.

No insurance? Wow, that sucks. Lose your house and evrything in it AND you're also liable for the damage to your neighbors house. Seems to me that couple hundred bucks a year is cheap, compared to what she lost and the neighbors suing.

stefaniaz, It sounds like you have a good insurance company. May I ask which one it is?

Homeowners insurance is so affordable compared to rebuilding and replacing your home and belongings. We had a fire in our home August 2010. What I thought was going to be easy to fix, turned into them tearing my house down and rebuilding it. All this cost my was $1000.00 deductible. The insurance company is suing the manufacturer of the refrigerator that caused the fire and at that time, I will even get my deductible back. When all was said and done, we moved back into our house in March 2011 and the total cost was over 190,000 and that doesn't include our belongings which were all considered a total loss because of asbestos. GET INSURANCE! It's such a small price to pay and it beats having to pay to rebuild!

bubblegummon, I have homeowner's insurance that costs me $352 per year. It is through Travelers. I do not live in Seattle, however, so perhaps it is a bit more for where the lady lived. The point is still the same. It is cheap peace of mind. It is insane to not have homeowner's insurance.

tabithastevens, Where do you find homeowner's insurance for less than $400 a year?

why was she running a generator? I doubt there was a power outage. the combustibles were likely more gas for the generator. Every year tons of people die from lack of knowledge on how to properly run a generator and store fuel. Their needs to be more education when purchasing them.

I am so very sorry for the loss these folks have suffered, especially this close to Christmas. But I have to ask WHY Grandma had no insurance. It's less than $400 per year. I assume the mortgage was paid off, since lenders require homeowner's insurance. So Grandma saved $400 per year and now she's lost everything. Not worth it. People, get insurance.
