MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - A 27-year-old mother and father have been released from Skagit Valley Hospital following a serious single-car crash in downtown  Mount Vernon Wednesday night, but their three children, ages 2, 5 and 7, remain in the hospital.

The 5-year-old was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries after being taken to Skagit Valley Hospital.

Police investigators say the car was speeding when it drifted over the center line about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. It smashed into a
telephone pole, causing the pole to move several inches. The car eventually landed in a bush next to the pole.

Mario Salas, 29, lives nearby, and ran to help.

"I heard a huge crack and ran outside to hear the woman screaming," said Salas. "I didn't have any shoes, but I ran over and the kids were
all bloody."

Salas says he helped pulled the children to safety.

"Another man handed me the kids and I laid them on the sidewalk, we had to cut the seatbelts," he said. "I probably wasn't supposed to do that but they needed help. I held the 5-year-old in my arms until the ambulance came."

Salas describes the scene as chaotic. He said the children did not appear to have any child safety seats.

Police say the family of five was living out of the 4-door Hyundai Sedan. The mother, who was believed to be driving the vehicle, was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of illegal narcotics.

"I just hope the kids survive," said Salas. "I haven't had any nightmares about it yet, but I have two kids of my own. I never want to
see anything like that again."

Both adults in the car were responsible for what happened to the kids. Kids are at the mercy of the adults who are entrusted with their care. If the adults take themselves out without hurting anyone else, oh well.

It doesn't take much energy at all to judge @taxed! I judge you to be illiterate seeing as how you're not capable of spelling "article" correctly. See how easy that was.

Hey, 'duckling' and 'taxed', give the druggies your address, phone number and a few hundred bucks if you think they need help. Otherwise, shut up. You are the typical 'somebody should do something to help' person that won't do it yourself. To me, they got what they deserved and I hope they never hold their children again (assuming they were their kids).

I see these comments in blogs by people like TAXED al the time. When it involves kids (or "family") they are full of sympathy (for the kids I assume). Should the accident have involved a single male the response would have been more like "tough luck". TAXED, the lady was arrested for DUI. She almost killed her husband and kids. Hopefully she'll face child endangerment charges too. The law is the law, whether it was a "family" or a single male.... Wake up....

Wow all these people can judge this family just by this artical. I agree they can use help. Maybe the ones with all the energy to judge could turn that to help?

Another case of child abuse by dopers and drug useres. People with drug problems should decide drugs or kids and if they choose drugs then surrender kids to cps and be neutered. Children should not be under the card of drug addicts. They cannot take care of them and love drugs more than chiildren. It's their choice.

I'm sorry to appear as if I lack compassion, but these people may not have been living out of a car if they had quit the drugs and alcohol, both of which cost money that should have been spent on providing food and shelter for the children. They may even have been gainfully employed and well able to provide for their children had they not been ingesting or shooting or sniffing it up while neglecting their children. How any parent can take a chance on their children's lives and well-being by consuming drugs and/or alcohol, especially while driving and speeding, and lastly, not even having any kind of seat belt or protection for the children is beyond me. The children are the true victims here, and I pray that if they live, they will be given a chance of a decent life in another home with people who love them. Obviously their parents don't love them, or at least not as much as they love themselves and the desire to fulfill their own sick needs.

Unless a victim is in immediate danger, leave them where they are. Let the Firefighters remove them. Many times good samaritans do more damage than good. I know it's hard but using the proper techniques is the best way to go. Been there, done that.

Mario, it was great of you to respond without thinking. It's true that all people *should* do what you did, but many people are afraid or have other excuses. I'm sorry to read the comments of those judging this family. It sounds like they are in very bad straits, which is a common risk factor for using alcohol and drugs. They just need help, not to be lynched in the public square. Nobody has walked in their shoes, which is why you can't judge other people. Good for Mario for being compassionate without caring who the people were. Everyone deserves compassion, especially those who are having trouble.

It's a pure luck meeting responsible parents. Thank god! And I feel sorry for those who didn't.

These "parents" didn't have car seats for their kids or a place for them to live. But they did had drugs?...Great partents. I hope the children are ok and are placed in a home where someone will love and take care of them. This is a horrible story!

These kids should not be given back to these "parents". Not only can they not provide any kind of home, they choose drugs over their childrens lives.I know people have lost their homes in this economy but there are places or family where you can take your kids.

Drugs and alcohol often leads to pain, suffering, and serious consequences for users and their children. People never seem to learn. The best policy? Totally abstain from drugs and alcohol. Too many people start down the path of social use to discover later that these substances have their claws deeply imbedded in their lives and they are so much the worse off because of it.
