EVERETT, Wash. - Prosecutors say a man, accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death and dismembering her body, may have done it partly due to his belief in the Wiccan religion.

Prosecutors say Eric Christensen killed Sherry Harlan in her apartment then scattered her remains in the woods. Christensen was initially charged with second-degree murder, but prosecutors upped that to first-degree murder Monday, saying the crime was premeditated.

Jeri Schiable, a Wiccan, says both Harlan and Christensen had been exploring the religion. Wiccan services are held at a church tucked in the quiet hills of rural Snohomish County.

The message there was one of love and harmony.

"The number one rule is, 'and it harm none -- do what you will,'" said Schiable.

In an interview with detectives, Christensen said he suspected Harlan was dating someone new. He told them he and Harlan took a Wiccan blood oath, which is said to link people for eternity

But a few weeks later, Christensen said Harlan got a text message from the other man. He was angry and believed Harlan had broken the oath, making her in his words, a warlock -- an evil traitor.

Christensen says they fought, but he denies murdering her.

Schaible says, despite what some might believe, Wiccans are peaceful.

"Lest in self defense it be. This was clearly not self defense," said Schiable.

Investigators say they have a mountain of evidence, including bloody shoe prints, surveillance video of Christensen driving Harlan's car and a witness who says he helped him dispose of her body.

Schaible says a true Wiccan could not have been so evil.

"He is not a Wiccan, okay. He does not live by the Wiccan reed. He does not live a Wiccan lifestyle," said Schiable.

Christensen served 12 years in prison for assault, after firing shots at another ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend. He told investigators back then he was following the tradition of his Scottish ancestors and was "on a blood run".

There is another such case in Albuquerque. As Wiccans seek to educate Albuquerque on their beliefs they should also learn from this event. When they besmirch “Christians” and “Christianity” for persecution of witches, may they remember the very same points that they are now emphasizing to us. The Bible commands us to love our neighbors (aka anybody/everybody) and even to love our enemies. Since those actions were contrary to biblical Christianity, they should no more be correlated with it than this murder is to be correlated to Wicca. .

Perhaps these murders are learning from example through the media. Say God made you do it you are criminal insane. Say the Devil/demons made you do it you could get the death pentalty. Look at the mothers in Texas.

One thing that needs to be said: there is no such thing as a "Wiccan blood oath". Some people take oaths on initiation, but they are not "blood oaths" in any sense, and the threat of violence is never a part of them. Certainly, the idea that anyone would or should take a "blood oath" to link them to a boyfriend for all eternity is nothing found in any form of Wicca I've ever seen, and I've been Wiccan since 1978. What it is, is just abusive, controlling jealousy of a type typical of creepy guys of any religion. There are guys who kill their girlfriends and then claim the Bible justifies it. The law treats them as murderers, not as Christians. Similarly, this guy is just a killer and an abuser. He is absolutely not practicing Wicca in any recognized form. Also, note that Jeri Schiable says that Christiansen was "exploring" Wicca. In other words, he was new, inexperienced in the religion. Dare I say that he was a dabbler? As such, he does not represent Wicca in any way.

thanks for finding some wiccan input on this whackjob. i get so frustrated with reports claiming religious motivations when the writer has no understanding of said religion.

Wiccan? I'm not familiar with that. Are these the people that make Wicker furniture? Or maybe they are the ones that invent information for Wikipedia? I am confused. Regardless...it is always a mistake to violate a blood oath. Blood oaths are forever...kind of like diamonds.

I just love it when people use religion as an excuse to justify murder. Its not justifiable nor is it the religion! It makes me sick for Wiccans that he is using that defense! (BTW just as sickening when people use ANY religion to justify murder-) What a waste of our taxpayer time and dollars!

I am WIccan and This guy IS NOT WICCAN!!! Wiccans live by the Rede "Ye Harm None, Do what ye will". Makes me sick that he calls himself Wiccan. There is NO WAY.. No way!!... We are a peaceful spiritual group that lives life in harmony with nature. And to also blame it on his Scottish ancestory??? Come on!!!!... what year are you living in??? I am of Scottish ancestory myself and am embarrassed by this man.
