Referees' blue flags called 'sexist' after pink whistle flap

SEATTLE -- This time, the flap over high school football referees is not over pink whistles for breast cancer -- it's over blue flags for prostate cancer.

All this weekend, Washington's high school football refs will be throwing blue flags to remind men to get regular check-ups.

But some are throwing a flag at the Washington Officials Association, saying there is a double standard. Last year a group of high school football referees were suspended for using pink whistles. This year's blue flags didn't raise any concerns.

It just so happens that this weekend is the Susan G. Komen three-day breast cancer walk, where many people called the move sexist.

"If they made such a stink about outlawing it for the breast cancer thing, why are they allowing it for prostate cancer?" says Steve Hamilton, who supports breast cancer research.

"They should do pink, they should do green, they should do yellow, they should do blue for every kind of cancer if that's what they want to do, but they have to be fair," says breast cancer survivor Bev Johnson.

The difference between the blue flags and the pink whistles appears to be that the referees who used the whistles didn't get it cleared by the Washington Officials Association beforehand, unlike the flags. The group's president says hundreds of officials from different sports support various causes for both men and women and the system is neither sexist nor chauvinistic.

" but they have to be fair" Oh give me a break. "Fair." I stopped caring about "fair" when I was in elementary school and figured out that life isn't "fair". As for all this "cancer awareness", it's ridiculous. I agree with @finster's assessment of the value of "cancer awareness". Can we just stop all this nonsense now and go back to living a normal life without having this or that thrust in our face every time we turn around?

@remainingreal The Officials Association did " just reprimand them but then let it go?" It was the reprimanded officials who didn't "let it go" and ran to the media to play the cancer card. As was proven here, had they followed the rules, they would have been able to use the pink whistles with no problem. Myself, I am tired of all the awareness. At this point, if you're not aware of cancer, you're too stupid to have anyone waste time on.

It is neither sexist nor chauvinistic, it is just plain inane. If you just step back and read this article like you just landed on Planet Earth, can you not see how ridiculous we look as a species??? Squabbling over what color or whistle "shows support" for whatever life or identity challenging issue comes up next is absolutely moronic. Sorry to step all over your cause, but you people look like fools. I see a bunch of babies squabbling over the right to their grief and anger while using it as some form of bringing awareness to the masses. It might raise you some money and awareness, but when you got to war over a whistle and handkerchief, it defeats the whole purpose of cancer awareness. It looks needy and greedy.

I'm curious to know how many people on here being rude and calling people whiners are men? Personally, I think it's a lame excuse as to why they didn't allow the whistles but allow the flags. If it is only a matter of getting permission, why didn't the Association just reprimand them but then let it go? It IS all about cancer awareness, after all. Control much?

All you whiners, just give it a rest. It's absolutely a NON-ISSUE. And stop wasting my time with stupid stories.

This is such a non-story. I love how the last paragraph gives barely a mention about them getting clearance for the flags through the association first- which didn't happen a year ago with the whistles.

I'm glad to see prostate cancer awareness finally getting some attention.

While getting all the angry quotes, I wonder if the crack "journalists" from KING5 mentioned this first: "The difference between the blue flags and the pink whistles appears to be that the referees who used the whistles didn't get it cleared by the Washington Officials Association beforehand, unlike the flags." I bet not.

Ah, crybabies whining about something silly. Oh no, no stick because this time, people went through the proper channels to get this approved and you have to complain there is no stink about it.

I know all of the idiots already know it, but I will remind the rest. The issue with the whistles had nothing to do with cancer, whistles or color. It had to do with refs not having prior permission to make a uniform change. Something that looks innocent could be taken wrong by some. Maybe the vegetarians want a message on the uniforms proclaiming their love for tofu. Ilvtofu might mean that you love tofu to them, but if means I love to, well you know. Yes ilvtofu was turned down by the dmv because they read it to not mean tofu.

It appears that folks here are too busy arguing about sexism, and have forgotton that the real issue is cancer awareness. Cancer doesn't care what sex you are. When it comes to getting the message out, we shouldn't be either. Be encouraged and supportive any time people take initiative to help in working against cancer, not petty and self serving.

Please do you have any idea how much money is spent on Breast cancer research and awareness compared to that of prostate cancer awareness and research. Believe me the money doesn't even come close to comparing. Breast cancer is probably the most talked about cancer. I also dont see women's sports doing things for prostate awareness as do most every male sport for breast cancer.
