EVERETT, Wash. – Water falling from the ceiling was the first tip-off that something was wrong with Dean Rappleye's roof. Then it got worse.

"First of all they had to cut a large chunk of the sheet rock out and then pull out all of the insulation because it was all wet," said Rappleye.

And then he got a look at the outside of the roof.

"It was probably four, five, six different shakes had been torn physically from the roof, exposing the inside of the attic, a pretty good-sized hole," he said.

The damage was all caused by a furry little critter – a raccoon. Rappleye had seen one.

"It took a lot of yelling and stomping and all kinds of noise to get him finally to move off," he said.

It didn't move far.

Rappleye's next-door neighbor had damage too. He got a new roof, as did another neighbor two years ago.

"It's annoying at night when they're scattering above you and you can't sleep," said Rachel Schweitzer.

"They would leave in the spring with the babies and eventually when we put the new roof in they can't get in any more," said Darwin Schweitzer.

There's not much you can do. State law says you can't hunt or trap raccoons and each city has its own wildlife restrictions.
Rappleye gets that homeowners and raccoons have to coexist.

"I'm a lover of nature but I've got to tell you they've changed my mind a little bit. I wouldn't be above throwing a shoe at them or something like that," he said.

State wildlife officials advise homeowners to keep garbage can lids tightly secured and remove pet food.

I am a licensed nuisance wildlife trapper and am willing to help these people with their problems of the raccoons etc etc. If any of you would like to contact me about it feel free to do so,and, for those of you who want to chance getting caught doing it illegal, its not worth it.

First of all, find out if there is a furrier in your neck of the woods that accepts raccoon pelts. If so, then do the following: Trap the vamint then either shoot it in the head or drown it then immediately put it in the freezer. Most furriers would rather the carcass be inintact so as not to damage the valuable fur......Then find out when the furrier accepts pelts and take the carcass to him for your reward. Depending on the quality of the pelt, you should receive at least $25............. If no furrier then either dispose of the dead carcass in your garbage or take the live coon for a 20 mile ride and let it loose................ Yea, it's probabaly illegal to transport it to another location but speeding is illegal too if you get my drift. Bottom line is, raccoons are destructive varmints in the urban environment and if you allow them to roam free around where you live then don't complain about the damage they will ultimately cause..........

So, this story is a little weak - what neighborhood in Everett? There is more than 1, I'm sure.

I feel for you! Being a city girl, I was frightened by the presence of a raccoon in my backyard. I didn't want to kill it, so I called wildlife. I was told to spray the wood around the building with a vinegar and water mixture (1 part white vinegar to 2 part water; and to wrap cayenee pepper in raw chicken skin and tie it) well it must have worked because the raccoon didn't return for over 10 years! I also discovered that one of hug-a-tree neighbor was sitting out cat pebbles for it.

chuckstr76 ~ Don't let the state catch you transporting these animals! There is a regulation about the transportation of raccoons, you need to be licensed. Trap and kill is the only way to be sure they won't return!

I see some parallels with socialism and imagration in this story. All it takes is one "do gooder" person in the neighborhood to feed these citters and soon you have a big problem.

Get a live trap, and re-located the furry critter. Use canned cat food as bait.. works very well..

I think that there are repellents you can purchase for these pest to place or spray around your property, also there may be audio deterrents to play around your place the sounds of cougers being one possibility may help with deer coming in to eat also.

Kill the raccoons. They are a pestilence. Just like mice and moles. End of story. Sorry, when it comes to $300K vs a RAT, I'll take my home and family and even the DOG over a RAT. You should go somewhere else. Just like the mole in my side yard. Oops he had an "accidental" run-in with a RAT KILLING SMOKE BOMB just like the raccoon would have.

All you have to do is fear for your life, and huntingtg them is legal. They will attack, so it is not hard to justify killing them.

it states right in the 2010 Washington hunting regulations on page 66 that raccoon season is statewide Sept 1,threw mar 15,2011!!!!and there is no bag limit.so i suggest that robera romero should research the regulations before writing that state law prohibits coon hunting and trapping!!!!!!although the season is closed right now, that just means that when the season opens we should all exercise the no bag limit on raccoons!!!!!.....

Glad I live in a second floor condo with deck. I've seen one every night browsing on our long green way for anything tasty. Assume they're after insects or worms. We can even rent humane traps here, which we normally use to catch feral cats to take to animal control.

The ages old question - which came first, the raccoon (or bear, cougar, etc) or the neighborhood?

And how come we are allowed to kill rats and other rodents but we aren't allowed to kill raccoons and possums? Also destructive, disease carrying rodents but just larger if you ask me.

Nasty creatures that can adapt to nearly any environment and can climb, swim, run, claw. After one attacked me and killed my small dog out the back door of my NE Seattle home I looked into what our options were. NOTHING. It's illegal to humanely trap and "re-home" (apparently they invade other raccoon's territories and/or they are outside of the city where they are used to getting food easily so they can easily starve to death). You can't trap and kill them (illegal too). So what happens when they start attacking us and our animals? Or in this case destroying our roofs? Well you first do all the things to try and keep them away from your house. You secure the garbage, limb up the trees and put the pet/bird food up high enough that they can't climb to it. These animals only liability is they jump poorly. Our cat is a great jumper! After all that, if you've still got them, you go rogue. I'm not an advocate of killing but want to feel safe outside my home.

If they tear up my house i will careless about the law and kill them with whatever it takes. They are everywhere like rodents and should be treated as such!

Hey, they're destroying your home, so who cares what a silly state anti-trapping law says. Raccoons are abundant and they live everywhere. Buy a Havahart trap (from Amazon.com---for about $50---it doesn't hurt the animals at all), bait it (Google raccoon baits), and when you catch the critter wrap the cage in a large plastic bag (to prevent a mess in your car) and either take it a few miles away and let it go, or place the trap containing the raccoon in the nearest water body for a few minutes. Problem solved (though you may have to repeat procedure a few more times depending on the size of your raccoon population)! Be careful---they can bite. I love raccoons and used to keep them as pets years ago, but when they become destructive they can really be destructive. Good luck.
