SEATTLE - Seventy-five percent of Washington state prison inmates are high school dropouts.

"Being a dropout in the 21st century is not a good idea," said King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg.

Satterberg says many of them started their troubled legal lives in truancy court.

But a new court ruling says if you're going to take kids to truancy court, you must provide them with a public defender. The prosecutor doesn't like that idea.

"The county can't afford to give them lawyers at every step of the way and I think giving a truant a lawyer to fight for their right to not be in school is a ridiculous waste of money," said Satterberg.

So the prosecutor is changing course. Instead of court, he's directing kids to new community truancy workshops.

It's more cost-effective, and with the help of inspirational speakers and counselors, Satterberg hopes it will be more beneficial for the kids.

"We're going to try to get to the root of the problem why these kids aren't going to school and try to help them at that point," he said.

The prosecutor is hoping budget constraints will end up being the mother of invention, keeping more kids on course and out of court.

"We don't want to give up on these kids.  They're truant now and truancy is a huge red flag.  We can't ignore that red flag," said Satterberg.

Satterberg says students who choose not to attend truancy workshops will still run the risk of being called to court

"Marysville has the worst truancy rules. That district doesnt care if you miss school because you had surgery. If you miss more then 10 days of school in that district you have to go to court to not get sent to juvy." My daughter moved from Marysville to get away from this BS. And just a side note to those parents who think this "truancy" stuff will teach their kids a lesson... those kids who are detained in detention, probably have never had any criminal contact with the police, they just ditch school for whatever reason. Most people don't know that during their stint in detention, (if they are sent there) they are housed with felons, drug users, and repeat offenders. Their "time served" is often longer than the criminals, and the majority of them return to detention with the police. Same is true of those whose parents file an ARY. They're "at risk" alright!

I think Mr. Satterberg needs to get a grip if someone gets pulled in for murder they have the right to a public defender why cant these under 18 year olds have the same rights?? I am very ashamed to say that king county has the worst prosecutor i have ever heard of. Mr. Satterberg lets go illegal immigrant criminals to prosecute people who protect themselves, he edefends cops who know that what they choose to do to citizens is wrong. I hope that Mr. satterberg stops worrying about stupid things like how often children attend school and more about the citizens of king county that he puts in danger by allowing criminals to go free because he has an agenda. I want him to realize that everytime he let his kids fake sick or play hookie he was condoning exactly what he is condeming. MR. SATTERBERG is an AWFUL prosecutor he plays only to meet his hidden agenda. As long as i am alive he had better never run for election again or i promise I will campaign against him as hard as I can!!

How about changing the school system. Merit pay, better teachers better pay. Teachers that can engage and keep young people interested in learning. You can take the money from the admin side of the schools and give it to the ones that teach the children, not the ones whose job it is to figure out how to get more money for admin, while cutting the actual budget for teaching. Alas that will never happen.

The main problem with students that skip school is that the parents are not stepping up. It is also a fact that many people in prisons come from a home where the dad is absent. How about getting these kids involved young with a Big Brother/Big Sister program with professionals as their mentor to show them what they can acheive if they stay in school.
