Obama talks economy, health care at backyard chat

SEATTLE – President Barack Obama is in Seattle today on the second day of a West Coast campaign blitz to support Democrats, particularly Washington Sen. Patty Murray, who is in a tight race against Republican challenger Dino Rossi.

Obama engaged in a "backyard conversation" at a Seattle home in the Wedgwood / View Ridge neighborhood Thursday morning.

Obama staunchly defended his health care and stimulus initiatives but acknowledged he may not have taken enough time to explain the policies to the public.

"We had to move so fast, we were in such emergency mode, that it was very difficult for us to spend time a lot doing victory laps and advertising exactly what we were doing because we had to move onto the next thing," he said. "I take some responsibility for that."

Obama has vigorously stepped up his campaigning in efforts in recent days with fellow Democrats facing the specter of losing control of the House or Senate -- or both -- to Republicans on Nov. 2.

During the question-and-answer session at the backyard chat, Obama trumpeted his support for women-owned businesses.

As the economy has changed, Obama says women have made "enormous strides" and now constitute more than half of the workforce. Obama says that means women's issues are now middle class family issues. Obama said female business owners have particularly benefited from the administration's efforts to free up lending for small businesses.

Before Obama arrived at the backyard chat, he managed to squeeze in some time to stop for doughnuts.  Obama and Murray dropped by Top Pot Doughnuts in downtown Seattle, where Obama ordered a sampler of two dozen doughnuts to go.

Obama shared a doughnut with Murray, declaring it "outstanding." He urged the other customers at the shop to vote in the upcoming midterm election before carrying the two boxes of doughnuts back to his motorcade.

After the backyard chat, Obama and Murray headed to a "Get Out the Vote" rally at the University of Washington. After the rally at the UW, Obama is expected to depart Seattle at Boeing Field at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Traffic is expected to be disrupted on Interstate 5 and on major streets during the visit.

Obama is in the midst of his longest campaign swing as president, a four-day trip through Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada and Minnesota.

He campaigned in Portland Wednesday for John Kitzhaber, Oregon’s Democratic candidate for governor, before flying to Seattle's Boeing Field around 9:30 p.m.

He stayed at the Westin hotel in downtown Seattle, where many roads were blocked, more "no parking signs" were posted, and police presence was increased around the hotel.

Obama's visit had a lot of people talking in downtown Seattle Thursday morning - some were thrilled to see the president in town again, others not pleased at all.

"I think it is very important to the political process, and gets somebody engaged. It is all about engagement," said Eric Warn. "It is very important."

Another man, Gus Mansour, was carrying a sign that read "I Love my President" across the street from the Westin.

"We understand what he is doing for all Americans, and we need to support him in the next two years to get this country back on track," said Mansour.

John Bianchi wasn't as happy about the visit because he's so upset by government spending.

"What he's done to the country, are you kidding? The economy, what happens to our children, our grandchildren? Who is going to pay for this," asked Bianchi.

This is Obama's second visit since August to campaign for Murray, a three-term incumbent who is in a tight battle with Republican challenger Dino Rossi.

After Seattle, Obama will campaign in California and Nevada for senators Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid, respectively. Obama will also stump for gubernatorial candidates California and Minnesota ahead of the Nov. 2 elections.

Seen quite ENOUGH of him lately. He needs to stay out of Hollywood before he ruins any more TV shows. I'll take it personally if he shows up on Fringe. I do hope to get rid of his pet Patty. She stinks up the whole state. Voting for Rossi.

If Rossi represents business then why is that Murray gets money from corporations by the millions as well? Your telling me that her coffers aren't over flowing from the boys at Boeing? Somebody had to fill the shoes of Scoop Jackson as the Senator from Boeing and it's gotta be little Patty housemaker.

Why would anybody want the government to have all the money? That is what a surplus means. The government has all the money. The money needs to be in the banks of people who earn the money. The government and monopolies hoarding money does not make any sense. The government acts like people don't really need money. Only the "elite" people need money. They certainly do not provide a public education to help people handle money like a real math class. People do need money and money works best when one earns money. We can all learn to handle our personal finances. Surplus or Defecit the government just spends spends spends with no results.

If we dont spend anymore and balance a buget year to year we will pay through generations. Since this won't happen it will be longer. China carries our debt. Is this smart? Now they own us. We gave away our manufacturing and act like we are invicible We have to stop wasting our money and playing political games. The dems just dont get that part.

The three people voting for Obama on this blog say He inherited the mess He is trying to do a good job and Rossi people were indicted under Bush The Truth The democrats have had four years of control and they still want someone else to blame? Both House and Senate and now the Executive branch for more than four years. As far as good intentions. At my place of employment I have to do a good job, thats why I get paid. I have to know what I am doing. Thats why I am hired. The only people indicted under Bush were crazy radical business people like Enron people selling air for millions of dollars. Has not one radical business person even had their license revoked under Obama? Not one. In fact radical derivative companies like AIG have received billions of dollars to stay in business. A smiling handsome face does not make the grade. Please vote wisely.

Seattle and King CO. also have expenses associated with the 'O's' trip to Seattle....and the Libs still sing praises to him. Oh my.....just oh my! My hope is that even the lefty Libs in this state will reject another six years of Patty Murray. My hope is that the desperation being shown by the Dems, including Obama and Biden to keep and gain Dem seats, will open some Washington voters eyes. Obama has failed the American people miserably and Patty helped him do it. Vote Rossi!

My apologies if my comments were difficult to read. I do think our citizens can and do deserve a much better education on business practices. This starts with a proper math class in the public school system. Our nation would benefit greatly in revitalizing our math program and recruit talented teachers that correct papers and expect students to learn how to add, subtract, divide and multiply. This most basic fundamental knowledge has to been taught well for at least twenty years.

I don't know what's funnier, whatching everyone argue over whther R or D is right or wrong? Or the fact that some people feel it is ok for a president to waste taxpayer money to campaign for other peoples election. Here is a nice fact for you all, the past two president's (Bush and Obama) have so far taken more vacation time than ANY president in U.S. history. Obama has already taken 9 vacations since taking office, including 3 of them before, during, and after the oil spill. I'm sorry, but that does not show much caring for the state of the country. But by all means, as soon as some of his fellow D's are in trouble he is on it. Republicans do the same thing too. People need to get away from this left/right paradigm, it does nothing but create division among americans.

One side attacking personal freedom, the other economic freedom. FACT: The Constitution is the basis of all Law in this Republic. It's overriding purpose is to put strict limits on the power of the federal gov. It's very specific in the few things it authorizes to the Feds and then explicitly gives ALL other authority to the States and The People. Given these indisputable facts your challenge in winning this debate is this: You're on-line now. Go ahead and find the text of the Constitution and copy/paste here the portion of the document thta explicitly grants the authority to administer Social Security, Healthcare, FDA, etc, etc. If you cannot provide this then all of your arguments mean nothing. I'll not be holding my breath waiting.

We have police departments cutting positions which will affect public safety, and they have to spend thousands of dollars running around providing security for these events. With the current state of our economy, and people out of work I can think of better things to spend this money on. I don't care if your a republican or democrat we shouldn't be spending money to support elections. And, as we are currently deeply in debt as a nation, Mr. Obama is spending Chinese money in order to help him continue a foolish and bankrupt policy that will ensure the demise of the U.S. as a worldwide economic power, maybe even in my lifetime. It's the loghouse republicans that sued to eliminate don't ask don't tell in the military, and now it's the Obama administration who challenged it. Backwards? Or more of the same? I just see more of the same. The Feds challenging state marijuana laws, prolonging wars in Afghanistan, reversing court orders on discrimination, bailing out big banks. Where is the change? Perhaps it's in the new Health Care reform, that will take another 4-6 years before I'm able to get insurance. Will it be overturned by then? Will there be change? Has Patti Murray given us change? Would Rossi give us change? I don't see it changing no matter who we choose.

Everybody is making a big push for Patty Murray this election because she's in trouble and they don't want to lose a guaranteed vote in the senate. She sold her soul for a few pieces of silver in the form of a few Boeing jobs and other pork and they can't afford to have her replaced with someone who actually has a backbone and will question how all their spending is going to be repaid. She is a critical part of the plan to destroy the economic engine that is our country.

Slhouldn't people decided on their own who they want to vote for. Either way doesn't effect most of us. I am still fighting to keep my min.wage jobs since my employer would rather hire & rehire illegals.

copperheadcsa......................as you run out and cash your Social Security check, go to your Medicare paid Doctor appointment and then race home to turn on FOX News so you can feel good about complaining all the government intrusion.......we are all wondering what color the sky is in your world. It sounds like you would represent the T-Party very well in any bid for political office. Good Luck.

Aziza, let me ask you, have you ever read the Constitution? I doubt it. The concept is very simple. %100 Personal Freedom, %100 Personal RESPONSIBILITY. The Government stays out of my level completely UNLESS I harm another. Example: Joe sits at home, smokes 14 bong hits and snorts a gram of coke. Stupid? Yes Crime? NOPE, no victim (although don't ask the Gov to pay Joe's medical bills when he ODs). Now if Joe gets in his car after the bong-coke binge and kills somebody, he never sees the outside of a prison again. That’s how the whole Animal Farm scenario is prevented you see. The whole Self-Government thing just doesn't click with most of the sheeple. That is the product of generations of people abdicating their lives to the Government God. That's known as Paganism. Idol Worship. Learning?

Thank God we have a President like Obama who can take us out of the mess caused by 10 straight years of failed right wingnut extremist policies where only the GOP fat cats reaped the benefits. Signed America.

Any of you anti government zealots ever read 'Animal Farm' or 'Lord of the Flies'? I ask not to accuse you of being idiots, but to ask you to simply exercise your right to vote and be thankful.

Wow, Patty Murray must really want the black vote. "hey, an Indonesian/African born semi-black person is saying I should vote for Murray even though I know nothing about her work or stances on the issues that affect me." "You got it!"

We could end up like France where government is the ONLY option.

What a waist of taxpayer money. If a candidate wants the president to come campaign for them, they should pay the entire bill, Air force One and all security related to it.
