POULSBO, Wash. -- Back in Azriel Carver's hometown of Poulsbo, it was a day of grieving.

"It breaks my heart. It really does. It's really sad," said one parent.

It's a heartbreaking lesson in life and death for students and teachers of second grader Azriel. Parents at Vinland Elementary received an email sent from the principal saying: "We are all shocked and saddened by the event. Those of us who knew him are going to miss him dearly."

"I had a really bad feeling about that," said another parent.

"It's just a mystery to me what happened. It's just weird," said one Poulsbo resident.

Authorities say someone walking along the beach on Fox Island spotted Azriel's body. He washed ashore, about 12 miles from the spot where the family minivan was abandoned.

Azriel and his mother, Shantina Smiley, disappeared over the weekend. Police released recent surveillance video of the two. It shows the mother and son stopping for directions Saturday night.

The next morning, their van was found partially submerged at the end of a remote beach road in Olympia.

"He could have offered a lot to his world. It's just a shame he's not here right now," said Jed Carver, Azriel's father.

A parent's worst fear is now a reality a whole community must face.

Jed Carver is working to finalize funeral plans for his son today.

bobknowsquat? Judging from all you posts, you have a real issue regarding custody. Perhaps you have gone through it yourself, and didn't get what you wanted? If so, I have this to say to you: You picked her, you picked the situation, you chose NOT to be with what you picked and the mess YOU created and now the consequence of that is you are not happy and your kids are screwed up because of YOUR lack responsibility in planning thoroughly WHO YOU pro-created with. Put on your BIG BOY PANTIES. You did it to yourself.

I am going to make a judgement based on a few words from a news story. Ready? here we go: Jed wasn't really interested in his son. His lack of sorrow in his words and use of the statement "its just a shame" and that he hadn't seen his son in a few years, and was sure he was a great kid proves to me that he was just a big selfish jerk. See how stupid that comment is? So is any comment judging people based on a lack of information, or even based on a sole person's perception of how they will act if faced with the same situation. For example: the fiance is guilty because he wasn't showing the correct emotion, because he wasn't saying the correct words. Hopefully, those people will never be on a jury. See, I'm doing it again. I understand that a lot of people like drama, but you know, so many issues could be resolved, including CUSTODY ISSUES and DIVORCE if people grew up, and stopped creating drama everywhere.

My heart goes out to Jed. Losing a son is a horrible loss for any father. So sad. The boy should have been living with Jed instead of the alcoholic and her latest stud. So sad.
