SEATTLE -- People in Seattle's University District are worried that two car fires in two nights may be the work of an arsonist.
The fires were just a few blocks apart, and both involve cars that were parked either underneath or very close to homes or apartments.
This morning's fire happened just outside the duplex where UW student Craig Benson lives.
"I heard a pop when I was upstairs watching TV," he said. "I looked down and just saw flames coming out from under the car that was in the driveway."
The four door sedan was completely engulfed, and the flames were beginning to spread to an empty unit in his duplex. So Benson sprinted outside, yelling for others to do the same.
Fire crews quickly arrived and put the flames out. They also managed to save the building, which sustained about $10,000 of damage to its door, windows and siding.
But the circumstances are uncomfortably similar to another car fire in the University District just 24 hours earlier. That car was parked in an underground garage at the time. The fire marshall is investigating both cases, but Benson says he is getting worried.
"It's the fact that somebody's going around and doing this in this area is just absolutely ridiculous. Like they're getting kicks off destroying things. It's completely beyond me," he said.
