PORT ORCHARD, Wash. - No charges are expected to be filed against a Kitsap County homeowner who shot a man who broke into his house Saturday morning.

It happened around 1 a.m. in Port Orchard near Melcher Street and Portland Avenue.

The suspect was on the run from police when he forced his way into a home to try to hide from the officers. The homeowner was sleeping at the time, but woke up when he heard the suspect break down the door.

Authorities say the homeowner shot the intruder in self defense.

"In this situation, someone physically broke in his door, came into his residence he was unfamiliar with this person and he had a girlfriend there, he has a right to protect his property and his family,” said Det. Krista Hedstrom of the Washington State Patrol.

The intruder was shot in the stomach and taken to the hospital for surgery. He's listed in stable condition.

I would not have just shot him once. I would have shot him until he no longer moved.

Good for the homeowner. Criminals continue to remain stupid and keep on being criminals, despite the fact that surveillance cameras are EVERYWHERE, and fed up workers and homeowners have had enough of being threatened by these low lifes. Being a criminal 20 years ago, they probably got away with it about 90% of the time. Today, with cameras, alarms and fed up people, maybe 10% will never get caught. Criminals today need to beware, we wont take it anymore!!!

I agree with the homeowner completely. I am kinda curious as to why the guy was running from the police, however. Parking ticket? Homicide? I guess the police press release didn't mention it and King 5 didn't think to ask.

I'm forwarding this warm and fuzzy story to all my right wing gun toten friends. They need to know I care about them. Yeah, I'm left of center. Another thought, Isn't Harrison Hospital out of pain medication. In cases like this there could be risk of a bullet/drug reaction. Must be carefull huh?

Shoot to kill. When this puke gets released early due to budget cuts, he will be gunning for the guy who shot him. Oh you want to argue with me that his being a felon will keepa him from obtaining a gun? Think again....gun laws only hurt the law abiding.

The clueless gun grabbers would have us believe that the homeowner endangered the entire neighborhood by firing a round at anybody. Could have missed and hit an innocent person, coulda done this, coulda done that, blah blah blah. You could cut the silence from them with a knife right now because they've got nothing they can say. Nothing. Good work by the homeowner.

Kinda nice that he survived. Now he is in custody, had to feel the burn, and the homeowner doesn't have to live with killing the guy. Shouldn't have to bother you if they break into your home, but it does.

I love it when there is a TRUE example of gun control. Anyone breaking into a house late at night will think twice if they hear of this.

Yeah, Homeowner 1, Criminal 0, this is what we, the law abiding citizens, need to start doing a lot more. Lets take back our streets, homes, and start erasing these scum. Good ol western justice I say!
