Port Angeles man's spider bite leads to dangerous infection

PORT ANGELES, Wash. - What seemed like a minor spider bite almost turned deadly for a Port Angeles plumber.

The Peninsula Daily News reports that Joel Roberson was working on a plumbing job in May when a tiny spider bit him. A few days later, his leg had swollen to twice its size, then fevers set in. Doctors gave him antibiotics, and he improved, but he soon developed a full-body skin rash.

"One day it would be a little bit better, and so we would put off going to the doctor for another day," said his wife, Sandi Roberson.

The bite had let in Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- commonly known as MRSA.

"They told me that I had to have surgery, that I could die from this," Roberson said.

MRSA is a common virus -- one in six people has it on his or her body -- but if it gets in the bloodstream through a cut or an opening, it is extremely resistant to antibiotics and can be fatal, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

"Apparently, there is only one antibiotic that really works well on MRSA, and it wasn't the one he was on," said Roberson's sister, Carrie Bennett.

Roberson had to undergo surgery to stave off the damage to his body. Doctors cut a 5-inch-long incision to remove infected areas of skin and tissue.

For six days, he had to live in isolation because MRSA is extremely contagious, he said.

He is now recovering, but before the bite he had canceled his medical insurance and now faces debt.

"The premiums just went up to where we couldn't afford them anymore," Sandi Roberson said.

Ideally, he would be recovering with the aid of a machine called a "wound vac" to help close the incision, but Roberson says that because he doesn't have insurance, he couldn't get the machine.

The family has accrued $20,000 of debt already.

1. As previously mentioned, MRSA is a bacterium, NOT a virus, and is normally found on skin and in the nose. Staphylococcus aureus is EVERYWHERE, both methicillin-sensitive and resistant. 2. I wish I had a dollar for every patient I see who complains that his skin infection is the result of a vicious and unprovoked spider attack; to hear them tell their stories, you'd think spiders were Taliban fighters trying to undermine the working man's livelihood. He probably just nicked his leg on a sharp corner under the sink. 3. Most strains of MRSA that aren't caught in a hospital are sensitive to a dozen or more different antibiotics. Doxycycline, cephalexin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole usually work and all cost $4 at Walmart. 4. Wound VACs are great, but before they came along people healed large wounds just fine without them, using nothing more than dressing changes twice a day. This is why healthcare costs are skyrocketing.

Isn't it great! We are the working poor. So much for a new medical plan....promises promises! I feel for this couple. My husband and kids, grandkids...all have medical. We just can't afford to cover mine. It would be over a third of my husbands wages to pay for it. we make too much to qualify for some, and can't afford the rest... I pray that they get the help they need...My prayers are with you.

MRSA is a bacteria, not a virus. I'm sorry to hear this gentleman has had to endure this, but I really wish news agencies would check facts before posting things!

Health insurance costs almost as much as a house payment? This is a crock.

I thought that new health care bill was passed, where is the change? What was that all about, anyway?

Unless you have insurance, you cannot have a "wound vac" machine, legal or illegal or citizens. You can apply for a hardship waiver, but, I gather, by time it gets approved, the purpose for which it may be needed may have passed. Emergency health care is covered, BUT and AND you still have to pay for it legal, illegal or citizen. You cannot escape from the bills. The healthcare billing department will hound you.

Too bad he wasn't an illegal alien. Then his health care including the machine would have been provided. Hope he gets better and is able to carry on

Let that be a $20,00 lesson. You must have health insurance. Its not like he worked at McDonalds for minimum wage, he was trying to save $$$ in the wrong way. With that said, hope he is doing better.

There are policies with high deductibles ($10k ) still available that are affordable. You still end up in debt, but at least not bankrupt.

I know the feeling with no health insurance. The company I work for is self insured and the premium is over $450.00 per month for the employee only. Add family not just a spouse ang it jumps to over $1000.00 per month. No way I could afford it! I am glad the gentleman is doing better.

My nephew is a plumber and he makes really good money. I wonder what his mortage is or his car payment? Maybe a smaller house or cheaper car would have allowed him to make his insurance payment. I have also had to make tough decisions but health insurance is a number 3 bill on my list of what is important. #1 Mortgage, #2 Electric bill and then health insurance.

Pretty sad that insurance is so high that most can't afford it. Especially if you own a small business.

Murphy's Law strikes again! Cancel the health insurance 'cuz premiums are too high and then this... Sorry to hear it! I'm betting his bills are way higher than the $20,000 he knows about. After all, he had to have surgery and spent time in isolation in the hospital. That's got to be way higher in costs. Wish him and his family better health and best of luck!!
