SEATTLE – Most people in Seattle oppose Arizona's controversial new immigration law and most people in Tacoma support it, according to a new KING 5 News poll. But, a majority of people in both cities say they aren't ready to boycott Arizona over it.

The law requires that if police are enforcing another law, they must verify a person's immigration status if there's "reasonable" suspicion they are in the U.S. illegally. Critics have said the law will lead to racial profiling.

Seattle has joined several cities across the nation in protest by calling for a boycott of Arizona businesses. Tacoma leaders are also expected to also discuss the issue.

SurveyUSA asked 600 Seattle and 600 Tacoma residents if they knew about the new law. Of those, 442 in Seattle and 412 in Tacoma said they were familiar with it.

When asked what they think of the law, 55 percent in Seattle said they oppose it while 41 percent support it. But in Tacoma, 57 percent support it while 38 percent oppose it.

Asked if their respective cities should officially support or oppose the law, 45 percent in Seattle said the city should oppose and 31 percent said support. Twenty-four percent said the city should take no official stance. In Tacoma, 38 percent said the city should support the law, 28 percent said oppose it and 33 percent said the city should have no official position.

Despite the differences in support, residents say both cities should continue to do business with companies in Arizona. Tacoma residents favored it more, with 72 percent saying keep doing business while 21 percent said boycott. In Seattle, 60 percent said do business with Arizona while 34 percent said boycott.

The 14th Amendment of the Bill of rights says that “All persons born in the United Stated, and subject to the Jurisdiction thereof are citizens.” What do we mean by ‘complete jurisdiction thereof?’ It means NOT OWING ALLEGIANCE TO ANYBODY ELSE. So if you are from another country, your allegiance is to that country until you have gain citizenship to another country. That means what is now called anchor babies are in fact not a U.S. citizen unless the father, if living, or otherwise, whose mother was a citizen at the time of their birth. This Amendment was put in place on the most part to provide citizenship to the slaves of that period of time. So the 14th amendment has nothing to do with Illegal’s so quit trying to make into something it’s not.

What a joke that poll is. Who did they really poll. 50% American citizens and 50% illegal immigrants? The only reason you get resolutions against illigal immigration passed by these idiots is because 75% of city councilmen in this country don't even know where an egg comes from.

Actually, the critics are trying to mislead you by saying the following - "The law requires that if police are enforcing another law, they must verify a person's immigration status if there's "reasonable" suspicion they are in the U.S. illegally. Critics have said the law will lead to racial profiling." This (mirror of the federal law) is to verify legality of your being in the United States JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER COUNTRY DOES EVERY DAY. Try going to another country without ID and see how far you get. This is just SOP everywhere. I've been ask for my passport when I travel and it sure didn't offend me. I was proud to show my USA passport. Anyone who Say's different either has never traveled or is lying to you.

jackwong, no we don't have to share the burden of the undocumented workers. Just send them all back to their own countries and if they want to come here, do it legally like all others did. We don't bend our law for the illegal immigrants. Would you want to change our law so that people can steal from others legally? No! It's just that simple. Either someone is stupid or he/she is one of those who is not here legally to support that idea of not doing what Arizona is doing.

I live part of the year in AZ and part in WA and I've been trying to decide which one of those states would be my "permanent" residence- you know, where I'll pay income taxes, property taxes, etc. I am pretty sure it's going to be the one where I can be confident that the state is doing something to protect against illegals taking over the place. Ranchers in Southern AZ are getting shot & killed by narco trafficers, terrorists have figured out the AZ border isn't protected by the Feds, despite their responsibility to do so. The State of AZ has stepped up and said they have had enough and will take care of business....boycott them all you want Seattle, but my residence will be in AZ if that's your stance. Of course, San Diego has screamed "uncle" and now L.A. is figuring out they need that power from AZ the accounts for 25% of the electricity they need to keep their city on the grid. I guess it's just a matter of time 'til Seattle gets a clue too!

King5 isn't listening! It's not what they want to hear. Rigged polls and results as are statistics, are used to prove what the promoter WANTS to prove. King 5 has shown how left they have gone in creative journalism, honesty not required, objective reporting doesn't sell ratings for commercial income. Ethnic groups like Delaraza & naacp promote hate and separartism and use anything to keep their income coming. Inflating an incident as "Stomping" and the boycott of Ariz. as a law against law abiding latino harasment. All this coverage gives them voice to say how put upon their ethnic group is so they can raise money and fill their pockets tho a small sum goes to help the people in their group, so they can ask for more And King 5 is pandering to them. Boil it down to money, power, money, position, and money. Did I mention control of people? Oh! power & money.

The boycotts are nothing but political grandstanding and vote pandering! The feds have drug their feet on this issue way too long and continue to keep their heads in the sand. Now it is time for the states to stand up and start taking care of business. @ jack wrong...the taxpayers shouldn't be bearing any burden for illegals. Stop being part of the problem!! And for the idiots crying racism...get a clue! I have no problem with people coming here legally and becoming American citizens but the hyphenated American moniker has got to go. This country has but one American flag and it's not red, white and green!!

I was one of those polled and I think it was rigged. Although I am very much opposed to illegal aliens and in favor of the Arizona law I was tricked by the questions to indicate that I was opposed to the law. The first two or three questions required that you press one when you supported Arizona but then on the crucial question you had to press two. It seemed to me to be completely unfair and when I realized that I had been tricked and had no opportunity to change my answer I hung up. I'm sure that others were also fooled and that the poll's showing of more people opposed to the Arizona law than in favor is not accurate.

What I should have added to that Examiner comment was the TITLE of the article. "States siding with Arizona ." NOW do you start to get the picture? STATES SIDING WITH ARIZONA.......STATES NOT SIDING WITH ARIZONA........There is clearly a division forming. Boycotts just ADD to the division. The BOYCOTTS NEED TO STOP.

This is out of the Examiner. It is only an excerpt. According to Rasmussen, the majority of voters in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Florida and Ohio are now standing with Arizona in its fight to enforce the most lenient immigration laws on the planet. Ten states are also now considering similar legislation. Only the most radical pro-amnesty state of them all, California (which, not coincidentally, is also the 4th most bankrupt), opposes it. Meanwhile, 70% of voters in Massachusetts favor a complete ban on public benefits for illegal immigrants and twice as many voters nationwide reject the left's violent, tantrum-throwing race hysterics as those who support them..........

OK Tacoma, this one's for you. If you should decide to boycott Arizona, then I will boycott you as well, just like I've done in Seattle since Safeco Field was built against taxpayer votes. I refuse to pay the indirect taxes for food and temporary housing, (motel/hotel), since that took place. I can sure stop going to the spaghetti factory and other restaurants and the Tacoma Dome in your locale as well. I may have to drive through there once in awhile, and used to own a residence there as well, but any and all spending by myself and my family will end with any ridiculous boycott involving another state's business! How much is Tacoma prepared to send the government of Arizona to repeal this law, which by the way only seves re-enforce the federal immigration laws. Money to help defray the costs of their illegal population will help to repeal 1070. This problem I guarantee you will be migrating to this state as well!! Seattle has already set themselves up as a refuge city! Whackos!!

The boycotts must happen to stop the domino effect on other states. Else, the exodus of undocumented to each state will flood the states' social services. We must stop Arizona on federal level, so we can all share the burden of the undocumented workers.

Boston is boycotting Arizona. Massachusetts is now boycotting Boston. Oh, and yeah, Arizona is also boycotting Boston. San Diego is boycotting Arizona. Arizona is now boycotting San Diego. Seattle is boycotting Arizona. Arizona is now boycotting Seattle....and Seattle is now boycotting Seattle... Hello! Can't ANYBODY ELSE see what is WRONG with this? These boycotts are nothing but childish, myopic, knee-jerk decisions made by politicians who are out of touch with their voters. The boycotts pit states against states, Americans against Americans! @aria: People, generally, do not favor of illegal immigration. What worries me isn't the AZ law per se. AZ citizens are justified in addressing the impact illegal aliens have on their economy and infrastructure. I blame the lack of meaningful action by the federal government over the past three decades. Regarding AZ''s attempt to get some sort of handle on the problem, I fear that, in their zeal, the police will overstep the safeguards of the Fourth Amendment's restrictions on search and seizure. Supposedly the law is written with these safeguards in mind, but I simply don't trust the police. Racial profiling is difficult to prove. I'm convinced it happens all the time. I'm also concerned about what happens to the passengers riding in the car which is pulled over for some minor "violation" such as turning left into the outer lane, or perhaps a burned out license plate bulb. Are they all subject to questioning, or merely the driver? "Any lawful contact" is pretty broad.

Residents divided on AZ immigration law That's the plan of the invaders and the progressive enemies, to "divide and conquer". It's okay for all nations of the world to protect their borders, such as Canada who will block Americas who have Domestic Violence or Drunk Driving records from entering, but when Americas focus on sealing the border crossing, then the fight changes from false civil rights scare tactics to an outright rant on American imperialism by capitalist pigs.

The Seattle City council, and all persons in favor of Aiding and Abetting illegal aliens in any way, particularly on TV. need to be immediately charged and held liable for their illegal actions with all charges possible,to the greatest extent possible by law.

It's about time someone stepped forward to oppose this steady stream of illegals pouring across our borders, and sucking the free services out of those of us who have been born, raised and lived our entire lives here, working and putting our money into social security and taxes, and having to virtually plead with our government to receive these things with it comes time need help, and yet, those illegals get it..................................................................................For FREE!!!! No Sir, I am in no mood to give it to those who must EARN it, not just because they left their country ILLEGALLY to get an awful lot of everything, for nothing!!!!!! I stand and salute Arizona for it's stand, and I will do everything I can to support that State in it's stand against illegals!! Uninformed fools. It is not show me your papers. If you are pulled over by a police officer you need to show ID right? Is it not a law already to carry your id, passport, etc if you are on visa from another country. Why yes it is. So should non federal officers be able to detain someone who is here illegally? I say yes. You dont realize what is going on down there. Seattle wont even allow homeless tents in their city. What if tens upon thousands of illegals were coming down from Canada breaking into houses terrorizing WA locals with drug violence and demanding free eduacation, medical care, housing on top of it . Illegal is not a race it is someone illegally here in the US plotting god knows what and basically untraceable in a dangerous way. At the very least the illegals are sucking on the teat of our govt and not entitled to any of the freebies that they are getting. It will and is bankrupting our country. One invaded state at a time.

All of us who were born and raised here, in the USA should want to be free of all illegals. They all need to go home and if Arizona's new immigration law will keep the illegals home in there own country, then more power to Arizona. I support Arizona's new immigration law 100 %. I am tired of working, so that all these illegals get eveything handed to them so freely. They live 3 or 4 familys to a house or apartment, they get free food, and have babies just about every year. WHY?????? should we have to work to support them. I personally have seen illegals come into the store, shop with there little piece of paper from the state, showing what foods they can buy, use there little plastic card from the state. Then walk out and get into a brand new Cadillac SUV. This isn't right. Ship them all back to Mexico!

If you are not ready to seriously confront the drug warlords' violence by yourself, you must LEAVE AZ ALONE. That's AZ's right of self-defense and her decision as a nation fighting the drug wars crossing the border. Again, we all know there are a lot of good guys in the illegals but that's not the point in the emergency status. Before all, illegal is illegal, that is, illegal means not legal. It has nothing to do with whether an illegal immigrant is a good person or not. A U.S. Army base on the border can accept asylum seekers fleeing from the drug wars in the neighbor country. Thus the way is still open for those who are desperately seeking safety in the wars. Or, are you ready to legalize the narcotics to destroy the narcotics price in the drug market? If you are not, and if you are still going to bother AZ's decision, you are hypocrite. LEAVE AZ ALONE.

Just so stupid to not support Arizona's new law. So it is OK TO CONDONE BREAKING THE LAW AND COME INTO THIS COUNTRY ILLEGALLY!!! What on earth are all these people thinking anyway???????? And "most" people apparently are on the stupid side of the law too if you ask me. I want it to be known that I for one will support Governor Jan Brewer's new immigration law. We should have her for President. And I can't believe that ...oh well I might as well just save my breath on what I really think about all you liberals who just want to let it all hang out anyway. Just sell this country right down the tubes. It already is going to hell in a handbasket. I used to be proud of the United States of America but now I can barely even hold my head up anymore, I feel sooooo ashamed of what it has become. All because of liberals who are so open minded that all their brains have fallen out.

Perhaps Washington residents should mind their own business... And perhaps Seattle's city council should address their own city's numerous problems before they go and boycott Arizona... Little more than a populist move to draw attention away from the viaduct and the rampant drug dealing that goes on in broad daylight, but yes, City Council weigh in on a law that you probably haven't read (let's face it, who among us has read the law) that doesn't affect us in any way...
