SEATTLE – All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 in Seattle were blocked Wednesday afternoon after a police chase that started in Snohomish County ended in a crash involving two vehicles.

It all started at about 11:30 a.m. when a Snohomish County sheriff's deputy tried to pull over a black Saturn SUV for speeding in south Everett, according to Rebecca Hover with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

The driver sped off westbound on 132nd Street SW. The deputy stopped the pursuit, but the driver continued on. He allegedly ran a stoplight, hit another car and kept going. Nobody was hurt in that accident.

A short time later, a woman called 911 to report a man she knows assaulted her and threatened her with a knife, then drove off in her black Saturn SUV. Once making the connection, deputies started looking for the vehicle again.

The SUV was spotted on southbound I-5 near Lynnwood. Deputies tried to pull the driver over, but he kept going. The pursuit continued into Seattle. That's when the suspect hit a Jeep, causing them both to roll over at NE 77th Street, said Hover.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with minor injuries.

The suspect was also taken to Harborview to be checked out before being booked into the Snohomish County Jail for assault, vehicle theft, vehicular assault and eluding police.

Traffic was backed up for three miles during the investigation and cleanup, which lasted nearly three hours.

beldock...I'll put a scenario out there for you....lets say these perps put a knife to your wife/husband's neck, steal your wallets, while you are coming out of the mall....and there is a cop that sees what is going on...these guys jump into a vehicle and take off...do you A} want the cop to go after them and arrest them, remember a high speed chase will probably happen or B} do you tell the cop no worries we'll get 'em next time, will catch them eventually...that's when you notice that your loved one was actually hurt by one of them and needs medical care....or worse you let them go and they go out and kill some little old lady that wouln't give up her purse....either way the cops are in a lose/lose situation...I do agree that SPD has some major issues....but to label all of them as bad is like saying all of us bloggers are bad...that would include you.

The cop did everything right. A dangerous chase was not worth it over a traffic violation. But when they learned he had committed two felonies and may use the knife again they had no choice but to stop him. The suspect made all the wrong choices and set the speed of the chase. The cops won't crowd him into an accident while there are innocent drivers around. But once he is clear of traffic they would have pitted him to stop the chase. Should they have let him go and wait and see if he uses the knife and kills someone?

@sammon its not about passing judgment its about common sense and yes we need a whole new police force to replace the crazy, abusive, maniac killers we call the SPD that break the laws they swear to uphold and tarnish our emerald city. They need to go help the Mayer find his stupid bike and make room for real men and woman to come forward and bring our citizens and the police force back together.

@risa77 read it again sweetie, the cop broke off pursuit of the FIRST chase, it was the second time they spotted the SUV and gave chase that ended in a crash. Dangerous stupid and defiantly not worth the risk. The driver of the jeep is fortunate to be alive and yes it could have been a family killed or several familys killed and the police would still pat each other on the backs for a job well done. And since he didn't injure a cop he will be released very soon

hmmmm ....it is a wonder how may of you are so quick to pass judgement and have the answer as to police should of handled a situation . Let see you join the WSP or the, Sheriff Dept and see if you could handle the job they do... I really doubt it.

You folks need to read the post above - it says "the deputy stopped the pursuit". That means he was not chasing the suspect. The suspect kept going, because he figured he was in big trouble. And who knows where he was going? Just because they knew who he was or where he lived, does not mean he was going there. He could have been trying to flee to California for all we know.

COP ::: FAIL ... again. Look, they knew who he was, they knew where he lived, they knew the car he's driving, they knew which way he's going. The most common sense thing would have been to disengage the pursuit as it got closer to the city and find him later. Where is the Police chopper, why wasn't the freeway traffic stopped or rerouted ahead of the chase? There are tons of chase videos from places like LA on YouTube to learn from. This didn't need to happen.

@lacquer, a lot of things shouldn't have happened in life, but they do. Unfortunately, the perp decided to assault someone and ran when he saw the police. The cops had no choice but to pursue him since he is a danger to the public (nothing to do with woodcarving knife). So, if there was a family in the Jeep it makes it more unacceptable? Or do you mean more acceptable if it's just single people in the Jeep?

@monroe527, so the guy crashed 'after words', with the police or with whom? So he also used a weapon to commit 'ab assault'? Was the 'ab' okay? Did it lose any fat? Did the perv follow the instructions from Gunnar Peterson's Core Secret 'ab assault' DVD? Haahaa..... been watching too many infomercials lately?

I am very disturbed by these chases. I hope the person in the Jeep is okay, but this shouldn't have happened. It could have been a family in the Jeep.

They terminated the pursuit and the guy crashed after words. Plus the guy was running because he had just committed ab assault with a weapon. Almost all agencies would pursue for this crime.

Guys......you just can't let scumbags run away!!! The cops have to catch them. If not, they will continue their scumbag ways and hurt more and more people. Lock them up!

@ Dander - What is that supposed to mean? The person in the jeep is a friend of the family, so I have zero sympathy for the piece of garbage who was running from the police. But think about it, there is no "chase" without the police cars pursuing it on a busy street. Sure, he can move in next to me - I'd love to "run into" him sometime...

This is exactly why the overzealous patrolmen are not supposed to give chase. The person in the jeep would likely not have been crashed into and injured if the police would not have chased the SUV, but instead used the information and resources they had to apprehend the person once stopped. The same news helicopter that was so willing to capture the carnage could have just as easily led the police to it's location, without having to unnecessarily endanger innocent bystanders like this.

they should have just shot them. Then it would not have involved so many inocent people. Why endanger the public. Cause they ran from poe-poe.

Saw the picture on KOMO. Much more information there since their Helecopter was on scene. The serious injury is the lamp post the cop hit.
