TACOMA, Wash. – Police on Tuesday launched a sweeping crackdown on gangs in Tacoma.

The raids ended in the arrests of more than 30 alleged members of the Hilltop Crips street gang.

"The Tacoma Crips has 100 documented members," said Gabriel Morales, a gang intervention specialist.

Morales' mission is to keep teens from joining violent street gangs. He hopes the crackdown is sending a message.

"Don't play. If you get involved in gangs, this is what is going to happen to you," he said.

Candi Hall of the D.A.S.H. Center for the Arts works to offer an alternative to the streets. Using music and dance, Hall is bringing young people together.

"We do provide what a lot of young people look for in gangs and that is a family that they don't feel that they have," she said.

The D.A.S.H. Center is located on the Hilltop at 15th and MLK, once a hot spot for drive-by shootings.

Tacoma's Hilltop was riddled by crime and gang activity in the late 1980s. Police threw gang members in prison. But now they're out and police say they're back at it.

The Tacoma Police Dept. says each of the individuals arrested was wanted for Criminal Conspiracy in connection with the gang's activities, which include attempted murder, home invasions and carjackings.

"The Pierce County Prosecutor will use new legal tools to dismantle the organization," said Fred Gutt of the FBI.

The Tacoma Safe Streets co-founder applauds law enforcement's newest approach to crippling the Crips.

"It is a business, an organization. There are people thinking about this every day while we're trying to protect our community," said Priscilla Lisicich. "It makes a statement to organized crime itself that this is not the place they can set up shop."

All of the suspects will appear Wednesday for their arraignment at the Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma.

What this article doesn't state is that after they have court tomorrow they will be back on the streets by Thursday.

Someone took the words out of my typing, "about time". It is high time for Tacoma let alone Seattle to toughen up on the gun laws, hearing that a former NFL star Plaxico Burress got two years of jail time for just discharging his weapon in the public might scare some folks. As a kid hunting in the Midwest sure did not see a lot of inner city kids hunting out in the woods, just hunting their gang boys in the city, do it now Tacoma.

I live in Tacoma and i am VERY glad the sweep is being done. i'm tired of being afraid to walk down my streets due to the gangs are showing themselves by their tagging and it is getting worse and worse. Good job to the Police department. Keep it up and hopefully the gang members will not walk away from conviction so easily. Get the Judges to do their jobs also, CONVICT gang members and keep them in jail.........................................

Detour, you are right. These people are domestic terrorists, and we need to give them something memorable. Perhaps we should ship them off to rot at Gitmo where they play with their foreign terrorist buddies. A couple days in local jail will only make things worse.

YEAH TACOMA POLICE! GO! Be safe out there! You (we) as a community have been thru what we hope no other generation has to go thru with our 4 fallen officers at Forza, 1 Seattle officer then Kent Mundell. You have made us feel like family...the fundraisers you provide give us a sense of safety again & a little closure to our fallen officers. Keep it up! We love you!

Now that you have them off the streets, keep them in jail and off the streets. Way to go law enforcement. Hope the courts now do their job and put them in jail.

As a society, we need to make it much less attractive for kids to live a life of crime by joining gangs. These thugs need to be brought down hard to make an example. But that's not all. There should be more deterrents to kids who want to join a gang to identify with such a violent group in the first place. We can start at home by raising our kids right.

We as a society need to stop beeing so PC about gang members rights. Prison is no place for gang members- put them 6 feet under and we will all sleep better at night- bring back public hangings at the edge of town so the young and impressionable can see first hand the consequences of the gang lifestyle!

Good job Tacoma! I am glad they did this, but I would not say anyone should be scared to walk down the streets in Tacoma. Come on, it is not that bad and it is actually quite safe (compared to some other cities like L.A., Detroit).

It's really not that hard to find the gansters and drug dealers. Just look for the cars that are rolling on 22's. You don't waste hard earned money on stupid things like that.

Like the guy in the video said. The cops have done this before, things cooled down for a bit.And then they were back in no time. You are all cheering failure from our current system. The same thing will happen again and again. In seattle and tacoma. I thought everyone knew

95% of gang members have a one thing in common. No traditional family life growing up is the major one. One dad, one mom, one job. It's not only the crooks either. many of the crime victims are from broken families too. The majority of kidnapped kids are from broken families. Pregnant teens have a better chance of being from broken families. We can go on all day about how to treat the criminals, but one thing will stop most of the problems. A good home.

Hey commenters ! Great Ideas ! Shoot em Throw em under busses Hang em too !!@! all wonderful suggestions I agree untill you realize .?? >> We can't really do that unless we go back about 200 years in our history. The best way to keep gangs from forming or getting a foot hold in your community is to get involved with youth and create connections with your neighbors. Learn to co-operate with law enforcement. Keep your eyes open and call the police on drug dealers and prostitutes. If they don't listen the first time keep calling and write letters to your city leaders and media. Gangs don't stay where they can't comfortably operate and commit crime.

wow.. this is crazy how you people can speak of children in such way. They are all still human. If Tacoma actually had more programs for us youth to get into and get help, then they most likely wouldn't be in this situation. some us come from families that are unstable. i mean if you come from a family that was raised or lived in such neighborhood then that's what you know. some one should have stepped in years ago and tried to make change in stead of taking away freedom. thats not going to solve the problem. we need a solution not a problem.

Savionjo, there is a program. It is called getting a job instead of running the streets. If you have time to run around, you have too much time on your hands. If you are too young to work (under 16), there are lawns to mow.

These aren't innocent children. They KNOW what they are doing. And because they are protected juveniles, they get off easy, and are back on the streets in no time. Round 'em up, put them in a cargo container, and drop 'em off in the middle of the Pacific.

These are not children, they are monsters. They stopped being human the moment that they joined a violent gang and started being a predator. Like any preditor found lurking around society and becoming a threat to public safety, time to put them down.
