SEATTLE - He's got a reputation, but he's not living up to it.  And that's a good thing.  Neville the pit bull is working the ferry lines at Seattle's Coleman Dock.

He isn't supposed to be here. Neville was on death row in Canada until an escape worthy of a spy novel got him across the border and into the K-9 work force. Today he protects the people who almost failed him.

"He's the kind of dog who would take a bullet for you," said Neville's handler, Trooper David Dixon. "And there are people like me who had a bad idea of pit bulls in the past that may change their mind and love them because they're great."

"He's so sweet. I love it when you pet him and he just smashes up against you. You feel the love," said Diana Cameron, who works at the espresso stand on the dock.

And after five years and 21 actual finds of weapons or explosives, Neville prepares to hang up his badge for good. He is scheduled to retire in September.

Neville was the first pit bull on explosives patrol for the Washington State Patrol.  And he's helped pave the way for four others to follow in his footsteps.

WSP currently has five pit bulls working narcotics or explosives. But Trooper Dixon says it's not so much about the breed as it is the sniffer and the disposition.  Neville has a nose that knows and the temperament of a dedicated officer.  Not to mention his success has helped booster the reputation of a breed known more to be fighters than crime fighters.

Trooper Dixon estimates that Neville does detection work on 150,000 vehicles a year.  One dog's life was spared to benefit the lives of countless others.

Neville will remain with Trooper Dixon after his retirement.

And let's talk about stupidity trojan33. "...a thousand years of dog breeding"? - Pitbulls haven't been around for a thousand years, ask anyone who has taken an entry-level history class. "Pit Bulls have been bred to be vicious and have strong clamping bites. Ask any dog breeder or someone who has taken an entry level science course." - Pitbulls have been bred to be athletic, strong, agile, and in some underground and very unfortunate cases to have an agression towards other dogs. They are also bred to be extremely loyal and affectionate towards humans. This is the trait that is most exploited when fighting for it's life only to please it's scumbag owner. That is not breeding to be vicious. And clamping bites? Seriously? Myth. Complete myth. The stupidity is staggering, indeed.

For those who asked about Nevilles back story, Look up Dog Rescue Around Washington and check their success stories. It was a wonderful story with a wonderful ending. Ontario may have banned him but the USA has been blessed with one heck of a cop!

Goodbye and good riddance. I hope the WSP is included in Gov. Haywire's 20% budget cuts. Every time I drive around the country, the difference is plain to see. WA has far more highwaymen per mile than any other state. CUT THEIR BLOATED BUDGET!

"Neville was on death row in Canada until an escape worthy of a spy novel got him across the border and into the K-9 work force." Were you planning on describing this allegedly exciting escape at any point, or did you just want to tease us?

jjcooke, I am sorry about my speell and grammar, but thanks to got some of my point. I have been bite too, but still I like dogs, anybread. I grow up around a lots of dogs, my grandmother use to pick them from the street and bring to home, we never have any problem with them. Also, I brought to USA a dog that I pick up from the street in Bogota, Colombia 18 years ago, he was bitted and dump at the street, still with me, live and sleep together with my Pitts, never a problem. What you say is right, we can't not talk in general, in special about this bread. Before I got Brandy who come to my home already pregnant and I dont know, I hear horrible things about Pitts. I found good homes from her kids, I still received pictures from they owner, everyone is happy with Brandy Puppies, they are 4 years old now. I am not reach and I own a small house in a good neigh, dont think that own 4 dogs and my house and backyard smell pee and poops, people who come to my house never think I have Pitts.

Very glad to hear that Neville will be able to enjoy his retirement with Trooper Dixon. Estrellita, some of what you said was valid, but your grammar and phrasing made it inane and difficult to read. And a dog is a dog, it should be treated with love and also with discipline when needed, like it would receive in a pack, which is a dogs natural family unit. I have been bitten by two dogs, both mixed breeds, smaller dogs(in both cases the dogs ran down the street after I had walked by and then attacked me, one with their owners running after the dog screaming at it, and the other owner never left her porch). I involved animal control in both cases. People who cannot manage their dogs should not have them, regardless of breed or dog size. Pits do get unfair press in some cases, but like with any sensational media, we hear a lot more about the bad happenings then the good.

do you own a Pitt?. If so, You dont deserve. All your talk basic on what you hear or see. Bad owners and uneducated people thinks that Pitts only are vicious and dangerous. I want to let you know that I own 4 . Keeping me happy from the time I wake up to time I go sleep. Pitts are fine dogs do you know that?, My Pitts have been help me a lot going thru deep depession in my live. Dogs are not to leave unattended at the backyard, dogs requered dedication and training, like any other dog. If I tide you to a post or leave you all day long only with food and water maybe, I guess you turn unhappy like you sounds like, if I put you on the backyard alone, never training, you still think the same way like you do right now. Animals and humans are from God. People unhappy and miserable are the result from bad and unhappy homes. Animals who are categorized vicious and dangerous come from homes like yours who thinks that dog is a dog. Go to school, anybreed can be vicious and dangerous.

Look at the dog owners. Almost none of the pits that attacked people were from upstanding owners. A dog, is a dog, is a dog. I know black labs that bite. Its true they are one of the top dogs in "human death by dog", right behind the rott.

catstina- What you don't believe in a thousand years of dog breeding and you think genetics are a sham? You live are living in the stone ages. Pit Bulls have been bred to be vicious and have strong clamping bites. Ask any dog breeder or someone who has taken an entry level science course.

Aziza, you also say in your comment, " Why is it that they are also the breed that are preferred as fighting dogs?" You answer your own question when you say they are a powerful breed. Pits have an extraordinarily high pain tolerance and very high fortitude. These traits are exploited by awful people, who then force these dogs to fight. It is extremely sad! I wish you could see that you are actually blaming the victim here! It is not the dog's fault that he was exploited by an awful human being. I can only hope that this obsession of hatred for pits is a passing phase. I leave you for the night (I am on the East Coast and it's almost 11 over here) with this quote from the wise Cesar Millan, whom you may know as The Dog Whisperer, "In the '70s they blamed Dobermans, in the '80s they blamed German shepherds, in the '90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull."

Aziza, you are incorrect. The number of maulings a year by pit bulls is greatly exaggerated. There are over 30 breeds of dog that are often mistaken to be pitbulls and therefore are reported as pitbulls. When people mistreat and disrespect animals it causes a problem. You cannot blame an entire breed of dog for the misconduct of a few horrible people! Your fear is unfounded and ridiculous! You, yourself, admit that it is the owner behind the dog that makes the dog! How can you, knowing this fact, still blame the breed? Do you really think that the people who made rude and unfounded comments educated themselves on dog bite (or mauling) statistics before commenting? No, they made uneducated comments. I stand by my previous comment. I hope you will someday realize that you are wrong and misjudging a wonderful breed of dog. Please do some research on pitbulls! They used to be a loved and cherished in America, hopefully one day they will be again!

castina? Pits don't bite, they maul and the stats are clearly different and they overwhelmingly show just how powerful these dogs are. And yes any dog that is abused can be a dangerous dog- BUT Pits are a powerful breed and too many people do not respect this and abuse them. Why is it that they are also the breed that are preferred as fighting dogs? Don't get me wrong, I despise people who abuse animals. I also have respect for a powerful animal. And yes, we need more stories like this one regarding the good virtues of the breed. But people are not uneducated about them, just look at the mauling statistics. (Not just bite stats) Instead of insulting people who are wary of them, why are you NOT name calling those who mistreat them? Neville did a great service and deserves his dog day retirement-

A great example of how wonderful pitbulls are! If only all of the uneducated commenters below could see that any dog, if mistreated, will become dangerous, not just pits. The media just hypes them up as "dangerous." No one reports a bite from a chihuahua or any other small dog breed. Truth is, they are the more likely to bite you than any large dog. This story goes to show that breed specific legislation (BSL) banning pits and other breeds falsely thought of as "dangerous" is wrong. The reason Neville was on Death Row in Canada was because BSL was in effect in the province he was from. Had he been euthanized 21 bombs never would have been found and that could have been tragic! Congratulations on five years of great service for the WSP and great ambassadorship for your breed!

@slell? Certainly the dog breed has its virtues- but you even state yourself that its all those "crack heads" who give the dogs a bad name? These are strong dogs that when abused, are still strong dogs. You can't blame people for being scared of them- where is all your anger at the people who abuse them and neglect them? You seem to be angry at the people who are afraid of them. Makes no sense.

it says at the end of this story that Trooper Dixon is keeping him in his retirement! As it should be... and i really wish those of you that have never owned a pitbull would shut up... you all have no idea what amazing dogs they are. they are so loyal and sweet... its all the crack head owners out there that give pitties a bad name! For crying out loud they used to be called nanny dogs cause they would PROTECT children and watch over them! Really... they are good and i wish people who have never had the pleasure of owning one would keep the negative comments to a minimum...

Meg, something so important to the story is missing! Where is he spending his retirement and who will be taking him in? I don't want to pick on you but so many times other people in the press do not complete a story. I hope you will update this story.
