SEATTLE –  The law enforcement community is mourning another loss after Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Kent Mundell, critically wounded in a shootout a week ago, died Monday night.

Mundell's family was at his side Monday evening at Harborview Medical Center when doctors turned off life support. Officials say Dep. Mundell passed quickly and died at 5:04 p.m.

Dozens of deputies and police officers from at least six law enforcement agencies filed into Harborview Monday afternoon in the hours before Mundell died.

"Obviously everyone was waiting for a miracle that didn't come. Time made it's decision and the decision was that he wasn't going to live," said Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Det. Ed Troyer.

Troyer said when doctors made it clear that there was no longer any hope, the deputy's wife,16-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son shared one family moment together before taking Mundell off life support.

"He passed away with his family, his wife by his side, the last few minutes doing story time with his kids," said Troyer.

In a somber show of honor and respect, the officers lined the hallways of the hospital to personally escort Mundell's body to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Deputy Mundell's body will be escorted back to Pierce County Tuesday afternoon. A motorcade will leave the Medical Examiner's office at 2 p.m. and head southbound on Interstate 5 to the 74th Street exit. It will take South Tacoma Way, take a right on Steilacoom Boulevard to Mountain View Funeral Home. Citizens are encouraged to line the route to pay their respects.

Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor says his department's loss is the community's loss.

"We should all be thankful that there are people who are willing to step forward and put themselves at risk for us. That is the kind of loss we have today," said Pastor.

Gov. Gregoire has ordered flags at all state agencies to be flown at half-staff for the next week for Dep. Mundell.

"My thoughts and prayers tonight are with the family of Deputy Kent Mundell." said Gregoire in a statement. "Words can't express the profound sadness that my husband Mike and I feel, along with our daughters Michelle and Courtney and our son-in-law Scott. Our hearts reach out to his family, friends, colleagues, and community that Deputy Mundell proudly served. Though his life was cut far too short by this act of violence, his memory will live on in the many people he protected and served. I stand with law enforcement from across the state as we honor this fallen hero."

Mundell and Sgt. Nicholas Hausner were shot Dec. 21 while responding to a domestic violence call. When the deputies tried to get the suspect, David Crable, to leave his brother's home, he opened fire on them.

Hausner was hit in the neck. Crable's brother and his girlfriend pulled Hausner into another room and barricaded the door.

Detectives say Mundell and Crable then were in a shootout. Crable's daughter fought with Crable to wrestle the gun away. Mundell shot Crable, killing Crable and possibly saving his partner.

Mundell was hit multiple times at close range. He was on life support at Harborview Medical Center for nearly a week. Hausner was released from Madigan Army Hospital Christmas Eve. He went straight to Harborview to check on Mundell before returning home.

Mundell is the sixth Western Washington law enforcement officer killed by gunfire in the last two months.

On Oct. 31, Seattle police officer Timothy Brenton was shot and killed while sitting in his patrol car. The suspect, Christopher Monfort, has pleaded not guilty to the murder.

On Nov. 29, four Lakewood, Wash. police officers were ambushed in a Parkland coffee shop and killed. Suspect Maurice Clemmons was shot and killed two days later by a Seattle police officer.

Growing memorial for Deputy Mundell in Puyallup

While Deputy Kent Mundell was on life support, there was a tremendous outpouring of public hope, which has now turned into rememberance.

Many people came to find solace in a simple, somber vigil Monday night as candles were lightning a dark and cold Pierce County night in Puyallup.

In front of the memorial to the county's fallen deputies, members of the Graham Fire Department and the community at large gathered to remember Mundell.

"I see people not in uniform, saying the knew Kent Mundell. And it's not because of the uniform that they probably knew them. It's probably because of what he did when he wasn't wearing the uniform," said one participant.

"We felt it was important to show respect, and to know that he was important and to know that the work that he did helps not just Pierce County but the whole area," said Michelle Stidham, resident.

In nearby Spanaway, the deputy's neighbors remembered a good father, a good friend, and a good cop.

"We've been praying for Kent hoping that he would make it through," said Jennifer Schwenn, neighbor. "It's just been one of those things hearing he is on life support wondering if that would be the case and we'd keep our fingers crossed. Definitely sad for his family - my heart's breaking for the kids and his wife."

Back at the South Hill precinct, plans are to continue this remembrance each evening – a reminder of how fragile life is.

"We'd like to say it would never happen again, but we know that's not the case," said Verne Pierson, Graham Fire Commissioner. "And sooner or later it will happen again some place, and we pray that it's not somebody close to us."

Deputy memorial, fund for family

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Mundell's funeral is tentatively planned for next Tuesday, January 5, and will likely be at the Tacoma Dome. More details will come.

Several funds hav been set up for the Mundell family. Anyone wishing to make a contribution may do so at any branch of Columbia Bank. The Pierce County Deputy Sheriffs Guild is accepting donations on their Web site.  Tapco Credit Union has also set up an account, which can accept donation at any of their locations, or online.

The sheriff's department tells The News Tribune it has already gotten complaints from citizens about bogus companies calling them trying to solicit donations for the Mundell family. Troyer says the department does not support those companies and that you should not give any money over the phone.

Cards to the family or Police Department may be sent to Family of Deputy Kent Mundell or Pierce County Sheriff's Department, Mountain Detachment, P.O. Box 1489, Eatonville, WA 98328.

And the NRA polishes their assault weapons (you know those deer are really made of bullet proof material) pat themselves on the back and wipe away any common sense, good character and moral obligations by quoting "guns don't kill people, people kill people" while wondering why the rest of the world thinks we're dumber than a box of lead.

Like some people, I feel pretty helpless right now. Words, as with special moments, aren't enough. Yet words, and our prayers are all we have. That, and the knowledge there WILL be a better day. I know too that God will raise His arms wide as He welcome's Officer Mudell and blesses the Mundell family. And those remaining, we shake our heads and beat our hands, praying this is the end , , ,

Godspeed to you my brother. Deep peace and blessings to the family and the department, as they go through this rough time. At least justice was done with the perp, and he is rotting where he belongs. So tragic. Stay strong and remember, it takes a community to uphold the peace and law of the land. Support your local law enforcement every way you can. Be a proactive change in the world, not a passive victim.

I think God is answering by letting it continue to happen until we get up off our asses and do something about it. That's the higher purpose he has for us. We are only as helpless as we sit here doing nothing. Doesn't God help those who help themselves? When are we going to get it right? I bet that's what He's wondering. And I don't mean vigilante actions, I mean, really doing something to get people from getting control of firearms and killing innocent people or people trying to protect us. Any answer, but action is just an excuse.

May Deputy Mundell Rest in Peace. "agirlinseattle" He may not be more important, but he put his life on the line to uphold the laws and protect you and me. So while any law abiding citizens death is tragic, a Police Officer or Firefighter or Soldiers death should be treated with a little more respect to honor them for choosing to protect the rest of us. "tomalciere" I too support the second amendment, it does not give one the right to break the law however. To insert this type of disrespectful comment is not appropriate at all.

It is not a secret that there are cops out there that really need to find a new job. A couple episodes of COPS is proof of that. However, these officers (the six killed in less than 2 months) were not "being mean" to anyone when they were shot and I have not seen anything indicating they had any history of complaints. The 2 officers shot last week were taking the guy out of the house to sober up, not to jail (according to Troyer). As for the anti-gun people, the country would be alot worse off if citizens did not have guns. Crime would be crazy if no one had to worry about getting shot by a home owner.

This is truly another sad day in the lives of the law enforcement community. I hope that everyone realizes what these men and women put on the line every day when they leave their families to go to work. While the men and women of our United States Armed forces protect us abroad, these men and women face the same kinds of terror in our own backyards. We must as a nation, and a state take affirmative efforts to stop the glitches in the laws and justice system of our country that allow these monsters back on the streets. These kinds of things are going to happen in spite of laws and legislative changes, but I believe they will happen less if we are more prudent in our actions. I urge the Governor to look hard at the budget cuts that are being made, and challenge our congressmen to ensure that the costs associated with the Department of Corrections, law enforcement communities all across this state who are being forced to look at staffing cuts be evaluated long and hard.

Lunaazule, none of the officers were killed with assault weapons. I doubt that any of the killers were members of the NRA. You have to be absolutely heartless to try to turn these tragedies into a straw man attack on the NRA, of all things. tomalciere, same to you. Are you really claiming that these people who killed police officers were all freedom fighters? How obnoxious can you get? separac, everybody dies eventually, prayers or not. It is unjust to blame God for allowing police officers to die. He allows everyone to die. God did not kill the Deputy Mundell; David Crable did. Let God deal with Crable and Mundell as He thinks is just. Officer Mundell's family deserve comfort and support now. Not grandstanding by kooks with an agenda.

We need to hug our grandkids, children and loved ones even more. We do not even know if we will live through tonight. Life is a struggle. I pray for a peace which surpasses all understanding for the Mundell family. What a tragedy! Ilost my son, mom and dad to cancer. God has permitted me to live 9 years with lung cancer. I count it a blessing to have witnessed the bravery of those police officers who died while on duty. And to the many others that put their life on the line for us, I pray that God will protect them and give them favor wherever they go. Thank you Lord for listening and comforting the families of those injured and killed.

It sounds great to blame the judicial system, but if you I correctly, the Seattle Police shooter had zero, zilch, notta as far as a criminal history. If we hold everyone with a record like Crable, we will need a prison the size of Rhode Island. No one could have even predicted what Clemmons was capable of (other than the outstanding family he had with him at the turkey day table). The problem with society today is that people have no reguard for life. The threat of the death penalty doesn't do any good when the shooter intends to die. Life in prison for career criminals means 3 hots and a cot. Fixing the problem after the crime does not work. I was thinking today about the old child rhyme about 2 people sitting in a tree K I S S I N G. The problem with society is that we twisted the rhyme to suit. Now the baby carriage comes first. There might be a wedding later, and eventually there might even be some love.

The problem is that the best chance is that there will be a walfare woman hopping from bed to bed with abusive men and a deadbeat dad that may or may not even know (or care) that he has a kid. The kids are free to run the streets at any hour and have no father figure to show them right from wrong. 30 years ago, there would not have been a 9 year old kid flying to Texas alone, stealing cars and running the streets at all hours. One mistake and the kid wouldn't have been able to sit in that stolen car.

Lunaazule, anyone with a rudimentary knowledge about ballistics can tell you why the idea of a law restricting armor piercing bullets is nothing more than a Hollywood fantasy at best. Take your ignorance elsewhere.

This is a very sad end to a bad situation. Deputy Mundell died the hero's death – giving his life that another (his partner) might live. In Deputy Mundell's last official act as a Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputy, he shot and killed their assailant. His aim was true. Mission accomplished. May Deputy Mundell rest in peace.

I pray for comfort for his family. I'm the wife of a police officer, and these murders of our officers are incredibly painful. My husband has worked in law enforcement in five major cities around the U.S., but he has often said that Seattle and vicinity made for the most dangerous police work he ever did. That includes Miami and Houston. He has often said that he never saw so much drug use and mental illness, as he did here, which makes for unpredictability, and makes for people that have nothing to lose, so why not take down others with them? We have to take a hard look at why there are so many violent crimes here, not only toward officers, but toward the public as well.

1 on halloween, 4 on thanksgiving, 1 on christmas. People need to stop. This is so saddening, and ridiculous. All of these families will always think back to this, and have a hard time being happy. Good cops, and bad people. We do need Batman. Just like the movie Watchmen, if the cops are protecting us, who's protecting them? :-/ R.I.P. Never forgotten, always missed.

I was praying that Officer Mundell would make it. It is so sad that we have lost 6 officers. What and when are we going to do something to stop this? RIP Officer Mundell and my prayers are with your family and friends. There has been so much sadness in the LE and the communities of King and Pierce County, lets make sure that we are thanking our LE and letting them know that we are supporting them and are with them during thier grief. I, myself can't handle anymore sadness. My prayers are also with Crable's 16 yr old daughter for what she is going thru also. It is not her fault that this happened and we all need to embrace her also and show her that the community is not blaming her.

My deepest condolences to all the families for their loss. To prevent future tragedies the cities/counties need to retrain their officers to assume all people are armed and to approach with caution so no further mishaps occur...................God Bless

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer Mundell, his co-workers and friends, and to the countless number of people whose lives were touched in some way by his service to the community. It used to be drive by shootings were front page news, now they are not even back page news. I am glad to see that the plans for a memorial are slated for the Tacoma Dome. The services for the five fallen officers recently were well attended. Let us not take for granted this recent loss, and continue to show our respect for Officer Mundell.

Buddhist, you are an absolute idiot. Your words do not represent Guatuma the Buddha's teaching in the remotest sense, so steeped are you in your own ignorance. Mundell has most certainly been set free into bliss.

When does open season on police officers end? Hopefully NOW!! This is really sad that six officers lost their lives trying to protect all of us. Don't be surprised if you are stopped for a traffic violation and the officer comes up with weapon drawn, I'm sure I would. My thoughts are with all police, firefighters, military and anyone else who chose to protect us normal citizens on a daily basis. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! To the families and co-workers of the lost officers, my thoughts and prayers are with you also.

As I registered to display my comment I could not stop thinking about what has happened over the past 2 months. Being a daughter of a POLICE OFFICER I have somewhat of a feeling how his family must feel. Not having a dad around is tough. My heart aches for his wife, daughter, son, parents, brothers, sisters, and any one that was close or just friends. He seemed like a man that everyone enjoyed being around. I was hoping for a MIRACLE. May God Bless and comfort his family.

It somewhat makes me sick to see posts saying where Deputy Mundell's immortal soul is or is not headed. Unless you're God, and unless you knew Deputy Mundell's heart, you have no clue. Just send him and his family your best wishes and/or prayers, and beyond that, stuff the theological speculation. Just once. Please?
