The Hood River Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Collin Backowski, 25, from Pines, Colo.
Backowski and five friends were scouting places to take video footage and pictures on the White River Glacier.
Around 4 p.m., Backowski got ahead of the group by about 30 or 40 feet as they were walking through a naturally-formed ice tunnel.
Then, an ice chunk about the size of a school bus came crashing down.
Late Saturday, crews used tools to break apart overhangs and make conditions safer for rescuers headed to the area Sunday. Crews used ice axes and chainsaws to get to Backowski.
The other five snowboarders got off the mountain safely.
