SPOKANE VALLEY -- The Washington State Patrol and Spokane Police Major Crimes Unit are investigating a deadly officer involved shooting that happened late Wednesday night in Spokane Valley.

Officers tell say it happened in the 14,000 block of East Fourth Avenue at the Plant Farm with Country Charm, a local nursery.

Spokane police say a Spokane Valley police officer was responding to a prowling call from the nursery.

Earlier Wednesday, a neighbor made a request for increased patrols in the area, and a Spokane Valley police officer had parked his unmarked car in the parking lot. They say that officer was approached by a man and shots were fired.

Police confirm the man was killed. They identify him as 74 year old Wayne Creach, the owner of the Plant Farm.

"At some point there was a confrontation between (Creach) and the police officer and the officer fired his duty weapon," said Spokane police spokeswoman Jennifer DeRuwe.

Alan Creach, the victim's son, said his father was investigating what he thought was a burglary.

"At 11 o'clock, my father got out of his bed responding to what he thought was a burglar and he took a gun. Challenged that vehicle in his parking lot there in front of the Plant Farm. " said Alan. "Subsequently, a deputy sheriff shot him and killed him. My mother could hear that from the bedroom. She heard a shout and  almost immediately thereafter there were three shots that she heard.'

Creach said his father was a pastor with the Greenacres Baptist Church for 40 years.

Since a Spokane Valley police officer was involved in this shooting, the other agencies are investigating.

akayjon, While that is definitely a possibility. Please REREAD the story because that is NOT what it says. "My mother could hear that from the bedroom. She heard a shout and almost immediately thereafter there were three shots that she heard."

Did you not see where the son said his "mother heard one shot and then 3 shots afterwards"? The officer was being fired upon. YES so many things went wrong here. Had the officer had a marked car I know this would not have happened. The pastor would have know.. but he didnt so he shot at what he thought was an intruder, The officer shot back into the darkness and shot what he thought was the prowler that was called in. God picks the way we die. We dont get to. His death brought light to a VERY BIG problem in the Valley. Sad it had to go this way..

My grandfather built the house the pastor and his family lived in, the Plant Farm has been there for years and his family is a well respected family in the valley. My aunt took a tour thru the farm and the family was so nice and let her see the house she grew up in---this is a family who has lost a husband and father-send them your thoughts and sympathy not this trash I am reading on here. I am sure in time more of the facts will be know but now is the time to send the family, loving thoughts and prayers- No wonder the world is in the shape it is, reading some of the posts here

bazwest, Not true. The officer needs authorization to conduct a steak-out on private property. This was not only the deceased place of business, but his family home. Your analogies are not quite the same. If you are not welcomed onto the property or directly conducting business with the person or business in physical control of the property you are trespassing!

You are right jeffjsea30201750 the parking lot is private property after hours, however it remains defacto public property unless the property owner takes measures to restrict access or clearly designates it otherwise or you have been asked to leave. What this means is that legally a person is free to enter any regular parking lot at will. When was the last time you or anybody was cited for trespassing when you pulled up to Costco after hours and realized it was closed and left? Never. But, if you and your buddies have pulled 3 or 4 vehicles into the Costco parking lot at midnight and are standing around loitering you may find that a police officer, in the course of his duties, may pull in and ask you to leave. The police officer is not trespassing and in fact the loiterers aren't trespassing either unless the parking lot is marked No Trespassing after hours or they have been asked to leave by the owner or a police officer. The officer was on nursery property legitimately.

Kameha - Before you call anyone a moron. I think you better RE-READ the report. There is no report of the deceased firing at the officer. "Spokane Police say a Spokane Valley Police officer was responding to a request for increased patrolling because of recent prowling in the area." (this is a quote from KREM.COM the Spokane news) The research I have found is that the officer is to have authorization by the property owner to use his property for steak-out purposes.

you people are morons, he shot at a police officer and you want the officer to get out of his car walk over to him and say, "please stop shooting me, I'm a police officer here doing my job". You gun jocks want to run around shooting people becasue that is your right, well the police officer has a right to defend himself and that's what he did, the moron should have stayed in his house and called 911 and then he would have been told that the guy in the car was a police officer but these arrogant self righteous religous radicals think they are always right and everyone else is wrong so they shoot first and then die but of course it's not their fault it's eveyone else that is wrong.

bazwest, Fact: When a business is closed for business/ after hours it becomes private property and is considered trespassing. THIS DOES NOT BECOME PUBLIC SPACE. People are issued citations for this. I am not defending anyone is this incident. I think we all would really like all the facts. If the officer followed protocol then I think we will all be satisfied. If he did not then we need to stand firm for change in policy and reprimand.

ss427, Again, the deceased WAS EXERCISING HIS 2nd AMENDMENT RIGHTS. I would advise you to research it. Until we know for sure that the officer identified himself properly since he was in an unmarked police vehicle we do not know who is at fault. The deceased probably should have called the police to report a trespasser. My question would be was the officer in a uniform? Why would the officer confront an unidentified armed individual without back-up? I stand firm that there is some law enforcement protocol issues to be answered here.

What I read here just amazes me sometimes. If you are going to spout off at least have some knowledge about the subject matter. If you are getting all of your facts from this news site or any other than you are already behind the curve. What King5 or any other news station reports is almost always incomplete or has information that is completely false. Becareful of what you take from what the press reports. Remember, they get minimal information from the police doing an investigation. They want more so they go interview "witnesses." If 10 people saw an incident, only 2 will actually remember what really happened and be able to give those details back. The other 8 will have the facts wrong, miss importants details or not remember much of what they saw. By the numbers the press usually talks to someone in the group of 8. They report this and now you are believing what you read based upon poor or biased witness accounts. I am just saying.

Something has got to change!!! Our spokane police department has used excessive force and straight abused their power and far too many people have been injured or killed over the past couple years. Just because they have a badge they do not have the right to push around, intimidate, beat up or kill anyone. There was finally some justice served when the officers involved in the Otto Zehn killing were found guilty of using excessive force that lead to the death of that poor man but there are way more incidences that no justice can be found. If it was you or me that was involved in shooting or beating people we would be arrested and held accountable for our actions until we went thru the system and were found innocent of the charges. These officers involved are put on administrative leave with pay pending the investigations. Well excuse me but isnt that considered a vacation and not a punishment? Society may accept this happening to criminals but Mr. Creach was far from "BAD". STAND UP

This is tragic for all involved - but, it is not right for police to be ready, willing and able to shoot people so easily (we need to find alternatives). In this country citizens are INNOCENT until proven guilty (even if caught in the middle of a crime). Proven in court in front of a judge or a jury of peers. Police cannot legally judge, and punish a citizen on the site (their job is to protect citizen - which includes criminals/suspects). It's a dangerous job, of course, but their self preservation should not be their main concern (if it is their in the wrong job). We citizens need to uphold our laws, hold police accountable (they work for us after all) - we can do this through elections and jury duty (how often do police get charged with murder or manslaughter in cases like this?). Liberty and the rule of law is more important in our country (basic principles of freedom) than safety and law and order (you can find that in China - or Nazi Germany)

Well, nate. Cold? Give me a minute. My dog is on my foot. I just came back to the computer after leaving the TV room because Evening Magazine once again ran the story about Bobby the dog that found his way home after 6 months and 2700 miles. I knew I'd cry so had to leave the room. Cold? People never do that to me. People make informed choices, dogs love unconditionally. But we animal lovers are like that. Does that make us cold? Dogs don't pack guns.

I was confronted by this guy one time. My husband went to this nursery on a Sunday afternoon many years ago. We got out of our car and this guy comes running out of his house and yelling at us telling us it was closed and to get out of there. We were just wanting to buy some plants. I can tell you this guy definately had some issues. He totally freaked out on us.

I got a law we should pass; This week I've seen cars that obviously ARE NOT unmarked police cars, but have off market lights, extra antennas and fake decals on them... so we, the people, need to pass a law that says "if you are challenged by a person YOU BELIEVE is impersonating a cop vehicle, you have the right to defend yourself and under oath, stating so will constitute to no punishment." I think this will do two things, 1. people impersonating cops, they will get what coming to them. 2. Real cops, be sure to protect and serve in a fully marked vehicle and there will be no trouble.

STAY inside and stay on the line with 911. This guy's first mistake was to leave his home and wander outside.

Why was he free? Did the threatened officer shoot? Nope. Tackled and subdued. But hey! They must have hurt the poor misunderstood victim of the NRA when he hit the ground! Baaaaaaaad cops!

All of this chatter about the officer being on private property to supposedly justify their rants against the officer are revealing their ignorance about the nature of public vs private property. The parking area of a business, that remains open for public access after hours, is not considered private even though it is privately owned. It is a defacto "public" space. The police do not need a warrant nor do they need to provide notice to the property owner when they enter this "public" space in the normal course of their duties. If the property owner wants to restrict access and make it "private" they need to install a gate and shut it after hours.

Wait a minute nate. Not notifying the owner? That's who called. Next, Jeff, a person pointing a gun at a officer is an instant target. They're trained to shoot 'center of mass' and not just one round. Age is the last consideration. Only the gun counts. And would you look into the barrel of a gun and first determine the age of the threat? A child is as dangerous with a gun as a terrorist.

You tell me, ss427, how you can blame this elderly man for the following logical steps: - history proves police response to 911 calls regarding suspected prowlers takes several hours - you feel your means of livelyhood and your family are in danger from a trespasser on your property whose intentions you are unaware of - EVEN IF this officer stated "I'm a Police Officer", would you believe him? It's dark, there's no cop car around, he's on your property, and you're neighborhood has been having problems with crime. On the side of the officer, I understand that he's not out there for good old fun. It is simply his job. No job is worth dying for. If someone points a gun, then he should defend himself. From the limited information that is given in all the news reports, the responsibility falls on the officer's superiors. What idiots believe it's okay to send an officer onto private property without notifying the owner? And to do so in an unmarked car??? This whole event is tragic.

I believe the property owner was exercising his 2nd Amendment Rights. The officer entered his property in an unmarked car. I believe he should identified himself first, turn on his lights, sirens, announced his identity on his loud speaker, and or called back-up.... something before drawing and firing on the owner. I am not sure about you, but how many 72 year old car prowlers have you heard of? I think his age would be VERY APPARENT. If there is enough light to see he has a gun and shoot him. I am sure you could guess his age. Not a very smart cop.

Just another example of the trigger happy, shoot first, ask questions later vigilantes in uniform on the city's payroll (aka cops). Incredible and what's worse he'll be given a "slap on the hands" or "a slap on the back" and will be ruled "justified" in his action. What a tragedy for this family. Just another sad sad story to pile on the thousands of sad stories. You people that back these cops without question should stop and take a look back in history and see why some of don't trust cops. The answer to your question is no, I have never been arrested, I don't need to experience some things to prove my theory, I wouldn't walk down Crenshaw Blvd in Los Angeles wearing a blue and a red bandanna just to prove that street gangs are dangerous either. These hot shot cops have to use some brains, and if they don't have many, they need to look for work at a shopping mall. Again, some of you who have blamed the innocent man who was killed are beyond hope. Don't expect King 5 or other news sources to keep this story in the news. When a cop kills an innocent man, the media makes the story go away very fast.

Do we have no standards of behavior for "public servants"? I get tired of hearing that our "highly trained law enforcement officers" should be entitled to some special rights based on their "extensive training" (cell phone use for example) and then being told that "anyone would do the same thing" when these "highly trained officers" get buck fever and behave like rookies on spring break (pick any one of the dozen or more bad police shoots from the past 6 months). Which is it? Do they get privileges AND responsibilities, or just special treatment?

Again, to answer why the cop shot- from all accounts reported- the old guy pointed a gun at him, the cop told him to drop it and the guy didn't. So the cop shot. Its too bad that everyone is focusing on who the victim was, rather than the actual facts that created this situation. The old guy never called 911 to report a "suspicious" vehicle on the nursery protperty. The cop was there responding to car prowl reports, so he was totally justified in being there. Its not just "cop shoots pastor"- its really "cop shoots at armed man who pointed a gun at him and refused to drop it"

I have listened to his radio broadcast for years. To have lived so long and then be shot to death by an officer of the law. It is hard to understand. The officer will have to live with this for the rest of his life. It is a tragedy for him and his family as well. Far to often we are quick to judge peoples actions. If someone came at me with a drawn gun I would shoot and I am 65 years old. This officer probably thought his life was in danger. We don't require the police to stand and let someone eles have the first shot. Anyway I think it is much to easy to sit and comment on something that has not been investigated.

just the night before in Spokane, a security guard pointed a gun at someone and said he was going to shoot that person. A neighbor saw this, and took his own gun and shot the security guard. Turns out the gun was just a BB gun, and the guard was not even supposed to have it with him at work. Very similar to what happened with the pastor and cop. If you point a gun at someone, then you better understand that person may be armed as well. This story makes no difference that it was a cop involved or not. It could happen to anyone.

Situations involving firearms are tough for cops. Burglaries are high risk calls and standard procedure is to have your weapon drawn. Don't react fast enough and you're dead. They don't have much to go on when they get the call. This a chance you take when you arm yourself and chase burglars. Call 911, lock yourself in your house armed, and WAIT FOR THE POLICE! I'm sure the cop is in a state of trauma right now he won't forget. God bless all.

We have the right to carry a weapon and protect ourselves on our property @cvn65, you're an idiot. Sounds exactly like trigger happy pigs once again shooting without provocation. Lousy stinking pigs, I hope someone takes a pot shot at this pig for murdering an innocent man.

You dial 911 for a prowler and then you go outside armed with a weapon. WTF!!!!. Wow talk about poor judgement. NEVER, EVER, do what this poor gentleman did.

baz - I bet you were on the jury that acquitted the cop of beating the teenager in the jail cell............... Two types of cops: the idealists who truly want to help people and the control freaks who want to pretend they are God --- because of the second type, the first type never last long............... What is coming to this world, God was merciful in taking the pastor out before things get really bad. Some of us have to wait a while longer.

The pastor probably should have called 911 first and let the cops do their work instead of trying to track down the burgler himself. My first reaction too, was shoot first and ask questions later. But it seems that the pastor just used some bad judgement and got himself killed in the process. And clear2copy...don't give that " wouldn't you think "god" would have protected him" bit. That seems to be the first thing that comes out of peoples mouths. "God" (with a capital letter) doesn't protect us always from our own bad choices. "god" (with a small letter) isn't capable of protecting anybody. There ARE consequences and that is why bad things happen even to good people. Good people can make bad or wrong choices too. And good people can also be victims of bad people by being in the wrong place at the wrong time etc. There are NO guarentees in this life that anyone of us are protected from harm. It is by the grace and mercy of God if we are. We need to be humbly grateful.

Blackhand you reveal your own lack of intelligence and personal bias by spouting off and hastily labeling this officer a "murdering cop". An intelligent person seeks to discover the facts and then makes a judgement. If this man did indeed suddenly approach the officer with a gun pointed in his direction ANY intelligent person would deduce that the officer could easily have felt like he was in emminent mortal danger. The Pastor, undoubtedly running on adrenalin, may have over reacted and put himself in harms way. This situation is too bad...it is very unfortunate... but what would you have this or any officer do in a similar situation. What would you do if you were a police officer in this situation?

I would want to be the first to fire also. I want to go home to my family every day. No doubt the man was told to drop his weapon and the cop I.D. him self. Routine. I do feel very bad for the pastors family but these things happen.

leave it to the morons here to defend another murdering cop. the only way we would ever know the truth is if this cop had a camera on him, like 99.9% of cops this guy is never going to have the balls to admit he made a mistake. It doesn't matter who they kill if it's a criminal, an innocent victim, or in this case a pastor that was just trying to do the right thing, there will always be uneducated idiots that back them no matter what because that's what their daddy taught them. If this pig didn't identify himself as being a police officer before he shot, he deserves to at the least get life in prison.

Seems all cops now shoot first, and ask questions later. If anyone's still alive.

Shoot first, ask questions second, then go "oops!" If you read the law all the pastor had to do was turn with the firearm and point in th direction of the LEO. Bang, you're dead!
