PERUGIA, Italy - In the 48 hours since Amanda Knox was convicted of killing her British roommate, her parents say checks, e-mails and calls of support have been pouring in from all over the world.

Perugia seemed eager to move on from the circus atmosphere that pervaded the trial in its final days.

The family is also moving on, from hopes of an acquittal, to planning a long appeal.

"Obviously it didn't work here, they've convicted two innocent people, something went wrong," said Amanda's mother, Edda Mellas.

Amanda was so crushed by her 26-year sentence, it wasn't just her family fearing for her emotional well-being.

"The doctors asked to see her and then they just chatted with her, and said 'how you doing,' one of them said 'you're not going to do anything to yourself, right?' and she said 'no, absolutely not,'" said Mellas.

As she was rushed through the crowde streets, no one knew how Amanda would be greeted at the prison, now a convicted killer.

"So warmly, the guards, the prisoners, everybody was as shocked as she was and some cried with her. They all hugged her. They were very kind to her," said Mellas.

The prison also granted her parents and sisters a rare Saturday visit.

"Stay strong. This is going to get fixed. You are going to come home," said Amanda's father, Curt Knox. "And I told her I loved her and gave her a kiss."

Amanda will now spend her third Christmas in a foreign prison. She's so disheartened, her jailers are keeping her under observation until at least early next year.

unbiased jury? Put the crack pipe on the floor & step away from the lighter. "it would be hard to argue that the six members of the Knox jury who came to court draped, literally, in the colors of the Italian flag, were unbiased arbiters of the facts of the case.” Lets take a little trip in wayback machine to the south in 1947. can you say "All white jury"?

Do the crime, serve the time. I'll be glad when this story fades and Knoxy has to sit in prison without the media attention she and her family crave. Thank goodness (in this case anyway) most Americans have a 5 minute attention span.

truthdector - The Italian courts said she was guilty. No class, no conservative vrs. liberal. People who listened to testimony for over two years, said she was guilty. I'm sure you will spin thin into some sort of Obama fault thing like you always do.I enjoy your banter for comical entertainment. my_opionion - Unfortunately, the people who knew her best, before this, are not speaking: Boyfriend, Roommate and friend.

Apenney You keep expecting the American justice system to be applied in Italy. There are many Americans in many jails serving long sentences for crimes that we would consider minor, unsubstantiated and unjustified throughout the world. The only difference between them and Amanda is, they are not a rich little white girl from Seattle.Do you honestly think Fox news would run a story about this if Amanda was a Laquicha ? The idea that the United States Secretary of State would somehow get involved in this case is appalling, considering the cases they refuse to intercede on.Many American children are kidnapped to Arab counties yearly. Many wives are held in countries where they have no rights and cant leave, we(USA) do nothing. Personally, I feel more comfortable of have this convicted murderer in jail, compared to a "might be guilty, 95% sure but not 100%.

I'm from Texas and have been following the story for quite some time. I've heard "stories" about Amanda, but I'd like to know who she really is. Can anyone tell me? Did anyone on here personally know her?

She was rail roaded in a third world court system by an American hating prosecutor and found guilty by American hating Europeans; you got to crack a few eggs to make an omelet so destroying one person is worth it to them in order to stick a knife in America.

apennythought - It's called T.V. & WAY too many people watch WAY too much of it. From what I've seen & the things I've read & you mentioned, reasonable logic dictates no way did they do it. Do you people really believe two kids could clean a crime scene of all the (non) evidence?? HELLO!! CSI is NOT reality. And yes, kids do act a little strange when under immense pressure. This is not a T.V. show. Think about how a REAL 21 yr old girl might act (not an actor on T.V.) One other thing to note, we have no idea how out of context anything we saw actually was. But then again, logic isn't exactly a strong point on the left coast is it.

Have you never known anyone who was so germ-conscious, they wouldn't share any dishes or clothes with anyone unless they had been washed in chlorine bleach? I have known someone who did that, and she wasn't even weird, just really cautious. Either Merideth or Amanda could have been that way (maybe both!). So lay off about how perfect and infallible the Italian justice system is (is any human system perfect?) and face-up to the reality of variety among human personalities. I'm pretty sure it was Amanda's grandmother who told us that her Italian friends assured her that *no one* is acquitted at trial in Italy. If that's true, it sounds like their system is designed to encourage appeals (job security for those employed by the justice system?). Now they get an economic benefit, too, while family members pay rent and buy groceries there during the appeal. Perfect.

And get a load of the fantastic tale that wild-eyed, fame-seeking prosecutor made up from so little evidence you couldn't even verify a Jr-High research paper with it. How in the world can you give any credence to DNA evidence when Amanda and Meridith LIVED together? Does anyone NOT expect house-mates to, at least occasionally, do laundry together, help each other with clasps on undies or necklaces, etc., wash dishes in the same sink with the same cloth or towel? Have you never gone on a picnic with a friend, departing from one home and stopping at the other, washing the dishes (knife) there before taking them home (or forgetting them there). The knife didn't even match either the wound OR the bed markings. And WHY would they have stood around the house with the police investigating? Why weren't they on separate trains or buses hundreds of miles AWAY from the crime scene like Mr. Guede? Where were THEIR bloody fingerprints, which should have been near Mr. Guede's, in the room?

It is a pity that so many people are unable to live peaceably with the fact that different people have different ways of coping with various stresses, and are willing to convict someone of murder whom they have never met, base solely on her uncommon (thought not exactly rare) way of coping with being accused of a crime she didn't commit by the authorities who are supposed to be keeping her safe while she studies in a foreign country, supposedly to get a broader understanding of the world so she could have increased compassion for people who have different ways of living on earth and understanding their culture. (Look up Asperger's Syndrome.) She sure is getting a good view of a different way of running a *justice* system now, isn't she. The jury wasn't sequestered during the trial, they had to try to remember the value of various evidence and testimony over a years! time, there were only eight of them, and only five had to agree to convict her. By American standards, it's a farce.

It's not fair that her family is asking for the country to send money to them. They are already in debt and we are not going to bring them out of debt and they need to accept that there daughter is in prison for something that she done and they need to quit asking us as people for money!!

Everybody is forgetting about the other two guys!!! I think Amanda knows what happened and she is scared to tell the truth... i still think she deserves to be in prison because she knows something...

I'm so tired of hearing that poor Amanda is still in prison, poor Amanda will have to wait another year before her appeal will begin, poor Amanda this, poor Amanda that. What about reiterating the fact that Amanda Kercher was murdered, Amanda was convicted of this murder, and so there's a very good reason Amanda is still behind bars. It's like her parents are trying to make it all go away however possible. I feel for them in a sense, but she is guilty, has been found to be so by the Italian court system, and now she has to pay for her crime.

The flight recorder was active. He did not do a roll and acrobatics before the accident. He was flying in what was considered clear air space. It would not have mattered if he was going 300mph or 500mph, speed had no factor. The film was personal property, he could do with it, what ever he choices to do with it.They were prosecuted for destroying the tape. A bad conduct discharge and 6 months in jail. ((A Felony conviction)The Italians had not properly reported the hazard to the Aeronautical Safety Commission who would have created a no-fly zone through known tactical air training zones. The Italians understand that they were partially at fault, and that is why they were little protest (CONSIDERING). Your kind of like the Fox news watchers. You read and believe what you want, without doing the homework to get an accurate summation.

Gritz, no soapbox. I was pointing out that media play in the U.S. has been that of "anti-American" bias among Italians. Where might that possibly originate? These are facts: Even without the gondola cable presence on aero maps, Asbhy willingly VIOLATED protocol by flying at 365 feet, 700 feet LOWER than allowed. He flew at 620 mph, 100 mph ABOVE the allowable limit. He performed a roll immediately before severing the cable, no doubt inhibiting his reaction time. He taped his stunt, then removed/destroyed the tape. If it were me, and I were innocent, why not keep the tape to demonstate my proficiency as an airmen? As for going AWOL, it was not necessary as all four were shipped stateside, eliminating any possibility of a civilian trial. Again, three Italians were among the murdered that day, and justice was not remotely served. Might there be an element of "revenge" here? BTW, I have military in my family. I don't disdain (your soapbox?) soldiers/airmen, just criminals.

After reading all the facts in this case from begining to end it obvious Amanda does not have a conscious. You do not make out with your boyfriend in the police station just hours after finding out your roommate was murdered, It's disrespeckful. You do not smile in court in a murder case, It's disrespeckful. Why was the knife washed in bleach? Why did she say she was at the house during the time of the murder and then change her story? I would have never said that no matter how many times they hit me. I think that even if there is no God it is still advantagious to go to church. They tell you over and over not to hurt other people. The state of Washinfton has had more crazy serial killers then any other state in the country. Seattle has the highest suicide rate in the country. Their are more child prostitutes in Seattle in anyother city. Did you know Seattle has twice the theft rate then Detroit per 100,000 people? Washington also has fewer churches then any other state. Go fugure.

global justice You do not have all the facts. First off, Military members cant just leave their post and fly home when in trouble. That's called AWOL. Secondly, their are rules of flight that you are not aware of either. Was the gondola present on aeronautical maps? Did the gondola have aircraft avoidance indicators on them?Would the airmen have a fair trial? Your accusation is that the military allowed the escape and prosecution of one of its members. In clear violation of SOFA agreements and law. Being an retired military member myself, I am kind of taken back that fellow citizens have such disdain for their military members.Usually Military courts are easier to convict and punishment are much harsher than civilian courts. BTW what does this have to do with Amanda? Just needed a soapbox?

I just posted the story of Captain Richard Ashby, US Marine, and his killing of 20 civilians in Italy in 1998. He illegally flew his aircraft too low and fast and sliced through the cable of a gondola at a ski resort. The skiers were hurled 400 feet to their deaths. Ashby fled to the US and was subsequently found not guilty by a US Military Court. The post was removed by NWCN. Why is this factual account considered inappropriate for this discussion, in which posters are calling one another "idiots" and "murderers" and "devient (sic)?"

Seem like a very out of the normal night, something that would be difficult to forget I think her inability to account for her whereabouts was crucial in the case.Even if she smoke some hash, you do not loose your memory.trust me I know...I think.
