UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash.  - Children who play sports in University Place could be the next victims of budget cuts.

The small Pierce County city is looking at reducing or eliminating the $600,000 in funding for sports and recreation leagues.

"We pride ourselves in this community as being a step above the rest," said Patty Norton, a mother of five who plans on voicing her concerns at Monday night's City Council meeting.

Some parents are upset at the city council because members recently voted to give themselves a raise.

Parents could be asked to pay higher fees, said University Place's City Manager, Bob Jean.

Jean said nearly $4 million needs to be cut from the city's 2010 budget.

Jean said while cuts to sports programs are being considered, the council has not decided how to make up for the shortfall.
